Engine Cleaner Smell?
Well, I finally took the dive and decided to clean my engine up. It really wasn't too dirty just some minor build up here and there.
I decided to use a can of Gunk's Engine Brite degreaser. After I covered my alt, distributer, and intake I used the whole can to cover the engine. After I let it sit for 10 minutes I took the hose and washed it off with a gentle spray. I tried to wash off as much as possible without getting sensitive areas like the fuse box or computer wet. Everything came up beautiful on the engine. What grime was there washed right away. After I took it out on the road I noticed that it really still smells like the degreaser. The smell is also seeping into my cab. Its not like when it came out of the can but the smell is still noticeable. For those of you have used Gunk, does the smell go away after a while? I was thinking of giving it another bath in an attempt to stop some of the smell. Thanks! |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
I as well got that "cleaner" smell your'e refering to. It does go away after a while so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Oh, btw...I wouldn't use the whole can again unless you have a really dirty engine. Hope I gave you the answer you wanted to hear. ![]() |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Thanks for the reply. Today I took the battery and intake out of the engine bay and hosed the hell out of it. There still was a good amount of cleaner left in there (I could tell because the water was white). After I got everything back together I fired it right up and noticed that the smell was not as strong. It was still there but it was nowhere near as bad as it was before.
I read on some other forums that people complain about the same smell. They said wait a week or so and it should not be as bad. I just hope that the smell doesn't stay there forever. A week I can deal with but if it is going to permanently be like that then that will be a big problem. That cleaner gives me a sore throat really fast or at least it did when the smell was seeping into my cab last night. Thats the last time I use that stuff (or a whole can at that matter). I really didn't notice how much I used until the can got really light. I guess if all else fails I can cover it in citrus cleaner. ![]() I rather have it smell like oranges than that chemical smell! |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
He is the reason that I cleaned mine in the first place. His looks so nice because he uses a lot of tire shine in there. It looks great but dirt sticks to it too easily.
I smelled my engine today (lol that sounds funny) and it is getting better. The cab only smells like it a little once the engine gets got. Hopefully this will clear up as time goes on. If not it looks like I am going to orange blast it. ![]() |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Exactly. I was impressed but the smell pisses me the hell off every time I get in my truck. ![]() Only thing I read with simple green is it can sometimes leave a residue if you do not completely wash it off. I don't know if that is just on chrome or everything though. I will give simple green a try next time! Since you know what I am talking about did the smell go completely away for you or did it permanently linger there? |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Does it still smell like Gunk engine degreaser? It should be completely away by now. |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
I am glad to hear that.
The smell is getting a little better. I popped my hood today and took a whiff. It is starting to smell better. I can still smell it though after the engine gets hot. As for in the cab (what I am really concerned about) it is beginning to get better. It only starts to smell once the engine warms up. I thought I may have gotten some degreaser in the evap coil on my ac so I ran my ac for a while today in an attempt to create some condensation. I was hoping that would help to wash it out. Keep in mind it has not been a week yet. Its only been 3 days since I washed it down. I will wait a few more days and see what happens. If worst comes to worst I will gut my bay and hand clean everything with simple green. The only reason I want to get rid of the smell is because it gives me a damn sore throat every time I get into my cab. My mom said she could barely notice the smell though so I guess I am just really sensitive to the chemical smell. I will use citrus cleaner or simple green next time! |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Well my cab is smelling a lot better. Even when my engine warms up I can no longer smell the degreaser. The only time I can smell it is when I first turn the blower on. For a few seconds it smells like the degreaser. Not too sure how I would go about removing that smell. Maybe I accidentally got some degreaser into the intake vent for my climate control when I was under the hood. I may try and locate that then wash it out. I think I may go over everything with simple green too to kill that residual degreaser smell under the hood. If I pop the hood I still get a good whiff of it.
I wonder if odor neutralizer works on something as toxic as Gunk's degreaser? EDIT: One more thing, does anyone know if S10's have a cabin filter? I have been reading they are often the culprit for all sorts of bad smells. Last edited by neuronyx : 03-17-2007 at 10:18 PM. |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Thanks for the compliments guys!!!!
sorry I missed your thread bud....that smell takes about a week to go. I use a whole can or more on a car the first time. After that your good to go with just the citrus cleaners. Don't be afraid to run the hose over it again with the citrus stuff now, it may help that smell. The reason I don't have the sticking issues with dirt is I spray the foam on, let it sit a few minutes then I work it in with a rag to smooth it out. I just saw at the autoparts store today Black Magic Engine Spray.....I will give it a tray and let ya know! ![]() Last edited by GiveMeBreak : 03-17-2007 at 11:14 PM. |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Let us know how that stuff works out. I am a little skeptical about engine degreasers now (especially the chemical based ones).
Like you said you really only need to use the degreaser once every few years (if your engine stays fairly clean). I think I am going to go over it for the hell of it with some simple green or citrus cleaner. I was reading tonight that the cirtus cleaner also acts as a neutralizer, in that it helps to neutralize that chemical smell from the degreaser. Not sure which I want my cab to smell like more. I just hope i can mask that smell with either! I am just pissed off because I went from that new truck smell (and a nice clean smell from the AC) to that sour chemical smell right after I cleaned my engine. Do you guys notice that your AC blows stinky degreaser-tainted air when your first turn it on? I am going to need to wash my engine again anyway. We got hit with another snowstorm and now I have salt all over the place. Pisses me off because I wouldn't have washed it in the first place if I knew this was going to happen. One last thing, I think I am going to take it to the car wash time for the following reasons- 1. We have water that is harder than a block of calcium 2. Cold water doesn't always do the best job- 200F+ may do a better job 3. I live in a condo and people do not like when I leave a rainbow in the driveway. 4. I don't need people coming out of their houses telling me that I should stop using toxic chemicals. ![]() |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
I'm surprised your having that much smell....I noticed it for less then a week and its gone...hmmmm
The citrus Orange blast will not smell after a day, if that. I never notice that stuff after I wash it off. I will let you know once the snow has melted here on that Black Magic stuff. The roads are a mess here as well and I am not wasting any time cleaning..lol |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
I guess a whole can is bad. Either that or I managed to spray to somewhere and not wash it off.
Either way I can smell it pouring out of the hood! When all the salt on the roads is gone I am going to give Orange Blast a try. Thats made by greased lightning right? Last edited by neuronyx : 03-18-2007 at 04:04 PM. |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Ok I took a ride over to Autozone and found the orange blast. I was surprised how many things that store had. Much better that PepBoys in terms of cleaners. They are not too close to me so that was my first time there. I even picked up a pair of those silverstar bulbs that I have been wanting for a while.
I will let you know how the orange blast works after I take it to the car wash. Thats when there is a break in the weather and after we get a nice downpour to wash all of that salt back off of the roads. |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Just thought I would do a little follow up. Used some orange blast on my engine yesterday. I saturated it then hosed it down. Now it smellls like citrus! Much better than that chemical smell. That chemical smell is still in my vents but now a little citrus comes through when I first turn the heat on. I would highly recommend that stuff. It smells great, does a good job at degreasing, and is nontoxic!

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
The best way to clean and engine is with a high pressure steam cleaner.
U don't damage the finish of the metal and/or plastic/rubber parts. It just melts off the gunk. My mechanics love me when I bring them a cleaned engine to work on. |

Re: Engine Cleaner Smell?
Looks like the smell finally went completely away. Every once any a while I get a little whiff but thats about all. I can also smell it when my engine is really hot. I am just glad that it went away. I will use one of the above mentioned methods the next time I clean it.
Sounds like hot water cleaning is the way to go. I know how easily hot water removes grease too! Might use some orange blast for the hell of it just because it smells so damn good! ![]() |
