drum painting questions!

I'm thinking of painting the drums on my truck. Should I use a high heat paint or something else? I want to colour match them to my truck body.

Re: drum painting questions!

That's what I used, a high temp gloss black and a high temp clear, a few coats of each and you're all set.

Re: drum painting questions!

you have to use heat resist paint. you can get it at any auto parts store, they do make stuff specificly for what youre doing. good luck.

Re: drum painting questions!

Thanks. I thought you would have to use high heat but I thought I would ask anyhow. What about prep work? Is a primer needed?

i dont think youd need a primer, im pretty sure a high heat paint would be self priming.. but def sand the shit out of it first, and make sure its very very clean too.

Re: drum painting questions!

I used Hammerite paint on mine and it worked fine. I hit the rust spots with a wire wheel then followed the directions. Did about three coats and it looks great. Lots of gloss to it.

Re: drum painting questions!

I was thinking about painting them too and was wondering if its better to take them of and paint them or leave on and mask everything? I haven't really done anything with brakes before (i know I suck lol) so is it hard to get the drums and calipers off without f-ing everything up? also whats the best way to sand them?

Re: drum painting questions!

Just got inspired to do mine after reading this and got some engine paint and painted them orange. I tried to take the dremel and sand the rust off but only dust came off, so it still had rust, put like 5 coats on then 3 coats of clear, they look great! All I did to mask it off was put a trash bag over the leaf, it didnt get anywhere else.

Re: drum painting questions!

so luda you didn't get everything completely cleaned and it still looks good? cool...Yeah I might leave them on and paint them like that. seems easier that way then taken it all apart. did you paint the calipers too? I would think that they might be harder to get in there and paint it all, maybe eaiser to take them of...

Re: drum painting questions!

I just wire brushed em for a couple minutes, wiped em down, masked off and draped a sheet of plastic over my bed down behind the drum and sprayed away

Re: drum painting questions!

Ya Sauce, just painted over the rust, there were some parts that had like big flakes and just pulled those off with my finger. But ya it works good, Ive gotten some complements already, I didnt think people would even notice it. I would like to do the front too, maybe paint the calipers, and it would look sweet.
