deep scratches?

first of all i did some research and didnt find exactly what i wanted so im posting.

ok i bought a new 1985 dime. its in like NEW condition except for it has a camper shell on it which will be the first thing im going to change. buuuuttt where the weather striping is between the shell and the cab....it rubbed the paint off my cab. and i guess the truck had some kind of HIGH CLASS paint so its like 1/8" thick paint. and i want to get it fixed. i thought about putting some bondo in it and trying to be careful and sand it down and get a touch up bottle or something. but i think that would be a lot of work and i still dont think it would look very good. im not a body man(on trucks anyway). and im sort of a perfectionist. i thought about having it done for me but im still not sure about the paint. if its going to turn out right and im not rich. so.....and i need it done quick.
any ideas, help, tips...........................is greatly appreciated. thanks.

Re: deep scratches?

if you have some pics that would be great, but unless it really gouged, bondo is making it tough on yourself, some high build primer should cover those with ease. One thing thats odd....any paint thats an 1/8" thick is VERY VERY thick, PPG doesnt want any more than 10 mils or they wont warrenty it because of the risk of paint failure, to give you an idea a heavy piece of inkjet photo paper is 8-9 mils, just dont try and repaint the whole truck over that!

Re: deep scratches?

really dude, with a truck that old.... youre gonna have to deal, or get new paint... the paints gonna be faded... if youre selling it soon.... yeah touch it up just sand it and get some rattle can and put a couple light coats and sand it... just tape off the areas you dont want to paint.

Re: deep scratches?

thats the keeper truck. im thinkin about puttin some rattle can on it to keep it from rusting and shaving the handle on the tailgate and getting it repainted....but around the cab........diff. story. dont know what to do.
