Clear coat scratched.

This weekend I washed and got my truck looking all nice then I waxed it. I used some mothers cleaner wax and I rubbed way too hard on the hood the whole thing is little swirls from me getting way into the waxing. I caught my self and did the whole rest of my truck and it turned out great but the hood is horrible looking. I need some suggestions on what to use. I tried a hand glaze that said "removes swirll marks and minor scratches". That didnt seem to do much. I need a product that really smoothes out the clear and hopefully can fix this and not need a new paint job. Thanks

Re: Clear coat scratched.

Probably going to need to machine buff it out or get a dual action polisher. I love my Porter Cable PC7336.

If that doesn't sound too good, go to a local paint supply store and look for Meguiar's fine cut paint cleaner, #2. Should run you about $10 for a 16-oz. bottle. Buy a good applicator pad (preferably with some medium abrasiveness/cut) and do several light coats, then follow up with a polish pad and a good cleaner wax, then a good glaze/sealer.

When I run my DAP on vehicles, I do not apply any weight to the vertical surfaces (the weight of the machine is sufficient), and only approximately 5lbs of pressure on the sides. Most chemicals/waxes work best under little to no pressure. You are not really "doing more" when you rub hard, other than wearing out your arms. With the proper supplies and chemicals, you can have amazing results with far less effort.

Re: Clear coat scratched.

Like above, you will probably need it machined polish depending on the severity of the scratches or marring. If it is just light swirls, you could try some ScratchX from meguiars but you have to really work the stuff and it will probably wear your arm out. The machine JPowell mentioned is a great machine and can be bought at any lowes. I have basically the same but different model#7424.

Re: Clear coat scratched.

I have been really busy and havent had time to wash my truck, its get so dusty sitting at school because they are building a new school and decided to chip and seal the whole parking lot its a mess I wash it one day and the next it looks like I havent washed it for a week. I bought some meguaris scratch X a few days ago because the line on the back kinda sold me. something like if this product doesnt work only professional machine applied products will. I dont mind wearing my arm out my friends brother works at a car dealer and details cars and what not. Im sure he wouldnt mind doing my truck he volunteered to do my other one. I have a cheap buffer my dad got from sears a while back Im not sure if that would be considered a "machine" but if the scratch x doesnt work I might try that with some of that stuff you mentioned or is that a bad idea? Its doesnt just go in a circle it goes in an orbital motion so I think it might work it just isnt as high powered I believe. I may need filled in because I learn fast when I am around stuff I just have never been around much stuff like this. I really like to have my stuff looking like it should and have no problem taking my time and doing the job right. Thanks for helping out.

Re: Clear coat scratched.

The meguiars scratch X worked great, did the job but was a bitch getting it off a lot of rubbing and what not but it looks excellent I will probbaly do my whole truck tomarrow and wax it with a regualr wax. Is there any suggestions of some basic wax I should get?

A good over the counter wax is Meguiar's Gold Class Liquid. I used that back in the day and was very happy with the results. It goes on and comes off effortlessly as well.

Stick with the orbital buffer. As long as you keep up with your paint, it'll be all you ever need.
