pressure wash bad, garden hose good. at work i spray engines off all the time. if you got a 2.2 you should be fine and hose away at the engine. just not to hard around the spark plug boots, water in those don't give you hp numbers.

on a 4.3 depending on the year and stuff cover up the tb if its tbi, newer you should be ok. cover up the distributor, i have this problem all the time at work. i spray water and it gets inside te cap. when the water evaporates you think your trucks gonna fall apart with all the misfirin goin on. if you do get water in it just take it off and dry it out.

i personally use purple power, dayum good degreser.

Re: cleaning your engine

ive worked at the same detaail shop for 4 years now. It is okay to pressure wash we clean cars for 4 car lots and we always have pressure washed engines. just watch electrical components. you dont have to cover them or nothing just be careful. As long as your vehicle has a coil and not distributor, there is no
.need to cover anything.

Re: cleaning your engine

I have pressure washed engines for 17 years with no problems. I just wrap the distributor cap with a walmart bag & tie it off. It is the only way to fully get the crud off. If you have a new truck & always keep it pretty clean, a good engine cleaner & garden hose would be fine.

Re: cleaning your engine

I agree with all the people above BUT check the pressure of your pressure washer. I own a pressure washing buisness and those things can blow holes in your rubber boots. Now i'm guessing that yours isn't anything that powerfull just be carefull before going and grab parents, neighbors, friends pressure washer. I would say all electric ones are fine becuase they are under 1500 psi usualy.

Re: cleaning your engine

I use the do-it =yourself car washes. Do it in bursts too. You dont have to be all that close either.

Re: cleaning your engine

You could possibly power wash your engine but it be easier mabe to just cover the distributor, then use a 50 50 mix of simple green i believe thats what its called and water spray engine let sit for a min then wash off with garden hose should remove all the crud. Also try not to get the heat shield under the hood wet, happened on my old car and fell apart. Good luck.

Re: cleaning your engine

if you pressure washer has a rotating tip on it don't pressure wash it. but if it just has a regular tip on it you should be fine as long as you don't use to much pressure.

Re: cleaning your engine

I use a Shark steamer. Its great for cleaning rims and engine crap. Not alot of pressure but about 250 degrees of steam.I just slap on some degreaser and steam it off.Don't have to worry about getting water in nooks and crannies.Bought it at Lowes.

Re: cleaning your engine

I think it was like $80.Its a little unit that you fill with a 1/2 gallon of water.Takes like 5 min to heat up and steams/runs for about 20-25min.Then you just re-fill it and it heats up pretty quick.I use for cleaning my bathroom tile and sink, cleaning motors for prep, rims, glass doors. The steam comes out at like 50 psi.Great for getting tar and grim off too. It's Lowes so you just take it home, use it,and if you don't dig it pack it up and take it back. They sell it at Wall-Mart too.

Re: cleaning your engine

I cleaned my engine today. I covered the alternator, distributor, K&N air filter, TB, etc. with plastic bags and I sprayed everything good with Simple Green Automotive and started scrubing away with a 3M sponge. When I was satisfied with it, I sprayed everything down with the hose and it looked brandy new again. I also recharged the K&N today too while I had the hood up. So far I've been out a couple times and no problems at all...
