How do u guys clean ur fram to prep it for paint, mine is extremely rusty and wanted some tips or maybe what to use (besides sandblasting) to get it ready for paint.

Re: cleaning/ prepping fram for paint?

What i have done to mine so far is take a wire brush wheel that you use with a drill and attack it with that..works very well and some spots that are worse i use my orbital sander. Once clean i hit it with eastwood pre cleaner then eastwood rust encapsulator and finally a coat of eastwood extreme chassis black. So far it has turned out great and looks really smooth. The eastwood chassis black is pretty much like por-15 and works great!

I got a real small wire wheel like a 2" i think it is and i have a flex shaft for my drill, this has worked well for the tuff to reach spots.

I have just completed the frame and painted it. I also used Eastwoods Extreme Chassis Hi-Gloss Black paint. To clean the frame I used a wire brush and brake cleaner. But first i would use a putty knife to scrap a lot of that rubbery tar shit off the frame. Then brake clean and wipe as much off with a rag, then I would wire brush it. For the inside of the frame, i did the same thing. A little trick I found was to take a small propane torch and heat the frame to melt that rubbery shit. Then I would shoot brake cleaner on it and blow that shit out of there. PLease where a mask when doing this. Singed brake cleaner creates a powerful vapor. Then I primed and painted it. It took 1 quart of Eastwood's chassis primer but it took 3 quarts almost to lay down a good, heavy and even coat of the top coat. Here were the results.

Brake cleaner helps. A flap disc also helps. Here is my axle. It was crazy f-ing rusty. Then I degreased it and spent a couple hours flap disc sanding it and then shot several coats of slick sand and then primed and painted it. Your rusty frame can look just as good. Just takes twice as long. Tray a flap disc on your frame. I spent about 2, almost 3 weeks cleaning the frame before I even start the fab work.

Slick Sand high build primer. Seals rust and levels the surface.

Re: cleaning/ prepping fram for paint?

Don't get discourage about how long it takes. Stay detail oriented and get ever nook and cranny.

I shot the frame with 1quart of primer and 3 quarts of gloss. Keep that in mind. I originally shot the 1 quart of primer and the 1 quart of gloss. The primer went on good but the gloss coat was too thin and 1 quart for the whole frame is really stretching it. I blasted the frame with a syphon feed gun 1.6 tip tuned to limit the flow as much as possible. I ended up ordering 2 more quarts. Keep that in mind.
