Cleaning Frame

I am cleaning the frame on my 2nd gen s10 right now. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions... Right now all i am doing is using my wire brush extension on the end of my grinder and then i was going to use a smoother one to finalize it. Any suggestions besides that???

Thanks Ted

Re: Cleaning Frame

ive used hand scrapers for the under coating, then wire wheels, flap disks, and sandpaper on the rest. also alittle brake cleaner helps.

Re: Cleaning Frame

I haven't tried it but I'd bet taking a pressure washer to the frame would take that undercoating off real quick...

Re: Cleaning Frame

brake cleaner... it removes the undercoating better. then after you have gotten most off with the brake cleaner, start using a wire wheel

Re: Cleaning Frame

X2 on the brake cleaner. Then get the little detailed areas with a wire brush. Make sure you coat it with something soon after stripped to bare metal.

Re: Cleaning Frame

the wire wheel that has the ends turned in owns, then flap disk, then wire brush and maybe some sandpaper for those hard to reach spots. sandblasters are nice too

Re: Cleaning Frame

if theres anyone in your area that does soda blasting you may want to look into that, more expesive than sandblasting but its worth it,similar to sandblasting but uses baking soda and it wont hurt glass or rubber trim and wont pit or warp metal like sand, and it wont rust for a while afterwards, stay away from sandblasters converted to soda, they just make a mess and give soda blasting a bad name,we just got one at the body shop where i work and its amazing what it will do

Re: Cleaning Frame

what kind of paint does everyone prefer? i know of por15 but what else. all of my buddies use spray bomb undercoating but it just looks dull. i want something that will shine and go along w/ my rear link setup. im just worried if i paint the frame, it will chip off and the rust will be back.

Re: Cleaning Frame

gunk engine cleaner (the on ein the white can that you can get at pretty much any parts store) takes the undercoating and anything on top of that off with zero problems,... I figured that out when I accidently got some on my frame and hit it with a pressure washer,...

it was on there MAYBE 30 seconds and took the frame to bare metal.
