Re: Claybar??

wash truck. spray a 1' square area. then lightly work with the bar. if it seems to snag a little, use more spray. its pretty easy, and it works VERY WELL.

Re: Claybar??

no. it is reuseable. when the bar gets dirty, knead it a little. also, you can buy more of their lubricant at the store. its pretty much water and and wash soap.

Re: Claybar??

yeah, what zq8 said. or you can rip a piece off, and pancake it. when it gets dirty, roll it into a ball and pancake it again. your paint will feel like its waxed when done, then wax it.

Re: Claybar??

That sounds coo. I got some over sprayed paint on the side of the truck and was told clay bar will get it off. So I'm about to get some and see how it works.

an cheaper way to do it is put extra soap in your water bucket and get it really soapy then do the clay in and area and rinse off

Re: Claybar??

Wash with dawn dish soap, this works well at getting it clean and stripping old wax off, I use a spray bottle with a little car wash and water, with the clay bar in one hand and the spray bottle in the other i go to work. Spray down an area and slide the clay bar over it, you'll feel it catch the small particles in the paint, just keep spraying it often and kneeding the clay bar when it gets dirty. Don't drop it. When you're done give it another wash with car wash and it will look like a fresh wax, protect it as soon as possible.

The Red clay bar from Body Magic will scratch dark paint. It is very aggressive for BAD overspray. The Blue will not.

Re: Claybar??

I scrached it cause I didn't use a cleaner wax before I used the claybar, i just washed it. That left dirt and oxidation in the paint that you can't get out with washing and the claybar got it out and scratched my paint. I detail my truck every single weekend, I know what I am doing.

Re: Claybar??

Sounds like it? The point of the claybar is to get out exactly what you are saying made the claybar scratch your paint. If you kneeded it alot & used enough lube that shouldnt have happened. Bummer anyway.

Re: Claybar??

ok, first of all...NEVER wash your truck with dish soap, its called DIAH soap and not CAAR soap for a reason....

and if you can find an auto detail supply wholesaler they usuallly will sell just the clay bar
and you can just put soapy water in a spray bottle and use that as lube...but use a lot

Re: Claybar??

using dish soap once or twice a year when you're going to clay doesn't hurt a thing, it helps strip the old polish and wax off so the clay bar is more effective, I agree not to use dish soap as a regular wash.

Re: Claybar??

ANY dish soap will jack up your paint, yeah you might not notice it right off but it will, believe it or not dish soap is very abrasive...you shouldn't use it at all.....

Re: Claybar??

It strips off wax, it is not abrasive or your hands would be torn up. I have used it for 17 years with NO problems, ever. I have never had bad looking paint or rust on any of my vehicles. As for the guy who said that claybars are hell on paint. If used correctly, that is ignorant. It gets the contaminents out of the paint that washing & whatnot wont do, so you are not waxing over contaminents. That is just one guy, & just because he works at a body shop, doesnt mean jack. Not to come down on you, but too many people who havent even used a specific product want to comment on it without any colaborating evidence because they heard it doesnt work or it hurts something. Re: Claybar??

dishsoap IS abrasive....your hands and paint are two different things...why do you think your hands get all dry when you wash them a lot? it's not the water it's the dishsoap...just because you can't feel it doesnt mean it's not abrasive....but what do i know i have only learned this from several car care experts and paint manufacturers..

dishsoap is abrasive? that's gotta be one of the fuinniest things i've ever heard, you just don;t have a clue what you are talking about. Here's another explanation from someone who knows a little about the subject as well, read #3

Re: Claybar??

yeah the clay pulls all the junk off the surface of the paint that doesn't come off normally, you'll see exactly what i'm talking about when you use it, lightly run you're fingers over the surface of your paint after you wash it and you'll feel the embedded contaminents, use the clay on it and you will feel the difference. You'll feel it pulling that stuff off as you use it.

Just use "mothers clay bar" from autozone.. They aren't hard at all, just keep it lubricated.. You'll slap yourself in the face when you see how easy it is..

Re: Claybar??

Ive worked at a detail shop for over 5 years, and use clay everyday. The best way to clean contaminates and then protect the outside of vehicle is as follows:
1. Wash vehicle with dawn dish soap. (strips old wax/polish off)
2. Keep vehicle wet, and work in sections making sure to use lots of lube.
3. After vehicle is finished.....Wash w/ CAR SOAP.
4. Dry and apply coat of wax......
5. Good as new

Re: Claybar??

you really shouldnt need a claybar unless you have some serious overspray and even then thinner with a towel will work better or even some reducer which is what i use and im a professional painteer

Re: Claybar??

Now whats the difference between using the the clay bar or Meguiar's Body Scrub? Body Scrub is supposed to remove all embedded contaminants, fall-out, tree sap, overspray, etc from the paint surface. I've used Body scub or their step 1 Paint Cleaner before everytime I wax and my paint is as smoothe as glass. I've only had a couple of times when even the Body Scrub left reminants of water spots behind. But Is it worth the time to hand apply the clay bar? I can use my orbital buffer to apply the body scrub because it goes on as if I'm waxing the car, it's a liquid. Takes a fraction of the time than hand applying.

On another question, once the clay bar is applied, is the next step to apply polish then wax, or can the polish step be skipped to hide swirl marks?

Re: Claybar??

all u need is an alchohol based cleaner or plain rubbin alchohol and a soft rag or shop towels works great i very rarely use clay at my shop only on extreme overspray and even then it comes off with reducer or thinner better and if you have to wash clay then wax your spendin way to much time when you could be drinkin a beer

I detailed cars pofessionally for 2 years for big name clients with nice ass cars. we used clay bar on everything from cavi's to lambo's and u dont even have to use the shit it comes with. just soap down your ride like you normally would and use the clay bar. it is extremly important that you re-apply wax to the spot you clayed because it takes off wax. then your paint will oxidize all in good time. Clay cant hurt your ride unless you get like a f***in rock in the clay and swipe it across your paint.
