Re: chrome wheels in winter
your best bet is to find winter wheels.
you could find stocks on craigslist cheap. Or get some cragar soft 8s for like 50 bucks a piece plus tires. But you have to wash them really really really really really really good. And apply a thick wax to them. And do this repeatedly over the winter. |

Re: chrome wheels in winter
I would never run chrome 22"s in the winter, plus your in IL, no way.
You'll be able to find a cheap set of winter tires/rims off of Craigslist for cheap. |

Re: chrome wheels in winter
it will help for sure. but theres no way to run chrome in the winter without them getting ****ed up.
Thats why auto manufacturers use aluminum, much more durable and lasts longer |

Re: chrome wheels in winter
I would still try and find some winter wheels. When all that salt and carp gets in all the little areas is what kills ya. Like in the lug valleys, and where the spokes meet the lips of the wheels. Those are the areas that always give me problems.

I love living the the west coast. We don't have to worry about all the salt and rust. I run my 22s year round no problem.

Re: chrome wheels in winter
If you cant get some winter wheels and must run the chrome wheels. I did this in the past and it helped alot. Clean them up good and spray a coat of wd40 on them. When the snow and salt is here, keep a heavy coat of WD40 on them, Spray them down good and dont wipe off.
Getting some winter wheels would be best though. But if you cant, i can understand that. |

Re: chrome wheels in winter
Could you run them all winter? Yes, but if you did so I would clean em' almost daily or every two days. Once winter was over you could just use some good chrome polish and they would look like you never even ran them in the winter. However, If I were you it would be so much less of a headache to go out and find some winter wheels to use. You wouldn't even have to worry about going out in the cold weather to clean them up. Just my two cents.

Re: chrome wheels in winter
I talked to a local chromer here and mentioned that OEM chrome wheels stood up much better than aftermarket chrome wheels.. he said that aftermarket chrome wheels are mass produced without any real consideration for midwest salt conditions, so they tend to flake and pit a lot easier.

Re: chrome wheels in winter
yea. i wouldnt recommend running the 22s through the winter the salt kills um. All tho i live in MN and my dads run his chrome American Racing 20s through 3 winters with very little up keep and finaly the Front left one has one flake on it. Im very supprised they make it through. But the trucks parked in a heated garage and see's the car wash at least 2 times a week during the winter.
then again my buddy had his moto metals flake like crazy being kept in a heated garage and he wax them once a week and spray waxed them almost everyday. Wheels cost wayy to much to have them chip or flake in the winter. Would def go out and get a set of cheap wheels off craigslist u can prob get a full set for less then one of your 22s |

Re: chrome wheels in winter
well i got some stock wheels but they dont stick out far enough they look like there to far under the body and i was wondering if wheel spacers are safe because it will look better with the wheels sticking out a bit like some 1in bolt on spacers
are these safe |

Re: chrome wheels in winter
I think they will be fine as long as they dont rub anything, the wheels that is,not the spacers.

Re: chrome wheels in winter
The wheel spacers that go between the hub and rim is unsafe because it takes away the amount of stud you have to bolt your wheel down, but those spacers are more safe because you mount the spacers to the hub like you are mounting a rim and then mount the rim to the spacer itself which has its own set of studs.

i have 22's on my 07 GMC, i run mine all winter, summer, spring and fall . . . . they have been in the mud, snow, ice and salt and they look like shit now. lol
i'll powdercoat um one day if i ever get time i guess. but something i dont understand tho. No one take this the wrong way either cause im just being curious and asking a question. why would you buy something (the wheels) to go on a truck if your gonna be afraid to get them dirty of if there gonna rust or whatever? i mean, its a truck . . . keep it as clean as you can and if they rust, oh well. just my .02 |

Re: chrome wheels in winter
Well some people dont like to waste money like you did and if there is a preventative way to keep wheels in like new condition then most people will do it.

Re: chrome wheels in winter
I ran a set of chrome AR 20s on my 99 tahoe year round. i cleaned the wheels more in the winter then I did the summer I think lol. But i did not have any pitting and ended up selling them with tires for 1000, which is what I paid for them 2 years prior.
