Re: armorall????

Don't know for sure but from what my dad says eventually it will cause cracking. My dad recommends leather conditioner on all of that and so far this has seemed to work for me and makes everything shiny like armor all.

Re: armorall????

Armorall is the DEVIL!!!! Amorall is basically silicone and silicone will eventually dry out your dash or what ever you use it on and then it will crack. It also can get on your fingers and then when you touch your car it stays on your car and silicone does NOT likr to be painted on. And its very hard to get all of it off of the vehicle. Plus it atracks dust. If it were me my choice is Mothers, Meguires, and 3M makes a good one.

Re: armorall????

wow....never knew armoral had this affect. i have used it about 6 times/ year for the past 4 years and no damage. guess i dont use it enough. but i DO hate the wet, oiley look to the finish. main reason i dont use it as much.

but i would think if Armoral really did cause cracking to the dash, that they would certainly have realized it by now and re-formulate their product to fix the problem. im having a hardtime believing Armoral is the culprit of cracking dashes.

Armorall IS the devil. I can not stand that stuff and would not even spend a dime on it. My dad on the other hand is just like your buddy there and pours it on everything. It does more harm than good in the long run and smells like @ss! My 2 cents....

Re: armorall????

it will only make your dash crack if you dont' let any air in on hot days, leave your window crack a little(which you should do anyway), my grandfather has used it for years on his hot rods, and his everyday vehicle, nothign he has ever owned has cracked.

Re: armorall????

I kinda like the look of armorall but I HATE the greasy effect and yes it does leave some crazy finger prints on paint and is hard to get off. I have used armorall for about 1 year on my 01 s10 and 1 year on my 86 f250 and let me say it dryed the f&*^ out of the fords dash. But hey is a ford lol

Re: armorall????

I would just use a wet paper towel to take off the armor all. Not dripping wet just damp. Alot of people that i know that have nice cars and suv's use baby oil for there dash and other interior parts. I havent used it yet but i plan to try it out this spring.

OK thanks I will take a wet paper towel to it this weekend then it will try something else. Baby oil sounds like a gppd idea but I really don't want my truck smelling like baby oil. LOL

Use automotive leather conditioner for your dash and all your plastics. Makes it shine and its good for it.

Re: armorall????

first before you put anything of tthose solutions on you should clean the area. the best stuff to use is called aerospace 303. it leaves a very nice soft sheen, and not a greasy feeling.

Re: armorall????

Rumor is it causes everything to crack eventually.

I'm not sure the truth behind this. But it does leave a nasty greasy feeling on everything. I am going to stop using it.

Re: armorall????

The cars I always see with cracks are the people who DONT condition their dashes. That is what makes them dry out. I am sure armor all doesnt do that anymore. At one time many years ago, it was claimed that Armor all did that. If indeed it did do it, I am sure they would have changed their ingredients. Of course, I still wont use it because I dont usually trust anyone after a big screw up. I do use 2002 which I have had nothing but luck for many years with. I spray it on & wipe it off with a towel. Then I grab a clean towel & go over everything again. It is now clean, with protectant, but not greasy. You are better off to use something than nothing. Using nothing will fry it in time. They are your vehicles, so make your own conclusions, but I will sell my vehicles when they are 5+ years old & still look brand new.

Re: armorall????

using a protectant is very good for the dash, i beleive your right about the old protectants. Most protectants contain some great chemicals that actually help keep the dash conditioned so it doesnt dry out from the sun beating on it etc. I think alot of people make the mistake of just putting dash shine on the dash and not doing the first step which is to clean the dash. Remember the dash is dirty, so first remove then condition. I have always liked the meguairs cleaner for plastic and vinyl there professional line, and then condition. Very nice sheen not to shiny.

Re: armorall????

yes, your applying armoral like those so called "detail" shops. Before you apply wax to your paint, dont you wash the carr? Before applying anything to any object no matter what it be,chrome, engine peices, fabric protector on seats, etc. YOu always always clean and then condtiion. I have to laugh when I see people buy those wipers that meguairs sells. what you are doing is moving dirt around and pushing it further in, and then sealing the dirt so it stays even better on the dashboard.

Take a microbfiber and use a cleaning solution first. Wipe down the dash and look at the towel. See how nasty it is? Some great cleaning solutions is meguairs plastic and vinyl rubber cleaner, work greats the professianal series.

Re: armorall????

If your worried about the dash cracking because of UV exposure there's no need to.The plastic used for todays interior plastics have UV inhibitors in them...How do I know this?Because I work with them everyday in an injection molding plant that supplies GM,Toyota,Nissan and Mazda.

Re: armorall????

armorall is alchohol based and it dries out quickley which dries out your dash faster cause it penetrates the dash. you should get a silicone based cleaner because it stays on longer and keeps your dash hydrated. my cousin works for a company that sells boat cleaning supplies and they have to use the silicone based stuff cause its out in the sun all the time so they have to keep it hydrated. this stuff he has is the best in the business i guess if anyone wants some i can get you some prices. he said it is better than anything you can get at any automotive store.

If i buy some of that meguairs vinyl and plastic cleaner that i dont have to use any type of other stuff i can just clean it with the meguairs cleaner and leave it alone or is it just a cleaner and not a protectant?

Yes, check out Meguiar's web site. They sell cleaner, conditioner, trim detailer, pretty much everything u need to clean any part of your vehicle. Try the new NXT dash protector. Very good stuff. Not sold in stores yet, so order off website.

Re: armorall????

heres a good tip straight from your owners manual...

to clean the interior all you need is a damp towel, every time you wash your truck just slightly wet a small rag or towel and wipe down your interior, leaves your dash and plastic/vinyl looking great. this is all ive done all my vehicles and it keeps the interiors look nice, clean and new

if you have to have your interior looking greasy and shiney (which i personally hate) then by all means go for the protectants or cleaners.

only thing i like to have shiney and wet looking like that is my tires, ive heard mineral spirits are the best to use, however i just use eagle back to black ( also has silicone like armor i think,r eason i bought it was because it was a big 1 litre bottle for only $17, WAY cheaper than armor all) on my tires, but then again my tires will wear out be3fore they crack so its not a problem.

i dont use papertowel, i use a lint free rag or towel. its all you really need to keep your interior clean.

Re: armorall????

All I know is DON'T use it on your tires! I work in a tire shop and we always have people coming in because there tires crack and get a brownish look to them. It wont effect the tire itself but it sure looks like $hit! I'm going to try that aerospace 303 aswell this weekend. Hopefully it is easy to find.
