Ammonia on Billet wheels?

I saw someone using glass cleaner with ammonia on his wheels to clean them, and they were highly shiny.

He said he hasn't really polished his wheels in a long time..

Is an ammonia solvent an ok thing to use? no matter how much i scrub or polish my wheels they don't stay clean very long... and those autozone sprays that ive tried do not seem to work..

Thanks

I wouldn't really recommend using an ammonia-based glass cleaners on your wheels. Ammonia is not good on rubber and of course will streak. Use a good metal polish and follow it by a wheel sealant. Wheel sealant is the key to keeping the shine you created.

Re: Ammonia on Billet wheels?

Well it is true that a lot of wheel cleaners actually are more acidic with a higher PH. Apparently this helps clean the brake dust off but it's harsh and can cause spots etc. I believe ammonia is actually on the other end of the spectrum and is a really strong base. I don't think I'd want to introduce that to my wheels either. In general I'd stick to more neutral wheel cleaners unless they are in need of some extreme cleaning. Once done cleaning/polishing be sure to coat them with a polymer coating as it has a higher melting temp. compared to carnauba wax. The coating will protect your wheels and make them that much easier to clean and polish in the future.
