Re: Spreading Filler...

They make plastic boards for that purpose. Or a piece of plexi, or glass, piece of metal, cardboard.

Re: Spreading Filler...

i used to have one of them plastic boards to mix on, but i think it got lost during one of my moves since then, im not sure where it went off to... my last job had one of those "rip a sheet" wax paper boards, theyre nice, i like them... but lately ive just been using gold ole cardboard, its never done me wrong

Re: Spreading Filler...

I use a mixing board and wraped in tin foil.

Why? Easy clean up afterwards, just take it off and toss it out.

I've heard rumors that carboard absorbs the hardener while mixing or whatever, not sure if its true but I I hate flimsy cardboard anyhow.

Re: Spreading Filler...

I've also heard you aren't suppose to use cardboard. But I use it most of the time when I'm at work. Here at home I use a plastic board I got from the paint store.

its true, but it doesnt mean anything... you shouldnt be mixing filler long enough to have the cardboard affect it... and if you are able to.. then you didnt add enough hardener in the first place

also the cardboard is only flimsy the first few times you use it, once it becomes "seasoned" its a pretty nice mixing surface, at the end of my last filler boards life it was over 2 inches thick and weighed about 5 pounds

Re: Spreading Filler...

I use pieces of plexi glass, and try to clean it after each use. When I get build up of old filler, I hit it with the DA.

I've got a few of those "rip a sheet" boards like someone posted above. I think I got them from Eastwood and I'll never use anything else.

Re: Spreading Filler...

Here is a story just for the hell of it. I currently have a body shop and collision repair is my trade, but I own a construction company as well. I do mostly maintaince on rental property's between tenants. Anyway, about two weeks ago I was working on a house that was about a year old. The bathtub/shower was one of those one piece units that you have to build the house around. This particular tub had a manufacturer defect and there was no glass under about a 1sq ft area, just gellcoat over it. Ofcourse the tub now had a big hole in it.... I used the same technique you would use on the body of any glass vehicle to fix it. I was mixing up my long strand filler on a piece of glass that was left in the unit by the previous tenant (was a shelf in a tv stand). Right after I got done with my wipe I sat the glass on the edge of the tub and the filler that was still on it was already setting up pretty good. I accidently bumped the glass and it fell to the floor and shattered. I found it kinda odd because instead of the filler either holding the glass together or comming off of the glass it broke with the glass. It was just kinda weird. It looked like green glass.......
