so - lets figure out how to mount this billet insert..

ok, so instead of that gay plastic insert on the steel ram air goodmark hoods, i cut that section out of the hood, and intend on mounting a strip of billet, to match my grille, and valance...but that would involve a good bit of thought, which i have my ideas, but i thought i'd toss this up there, to see if anyone else had any thoughts. the billet inserts are slightly wider than the opening itself, and as you can see, i partially cut out the center of the hood bracing, in order to be able to access that area of the underside of the hood easily.

xtucking22's has also cut out his hood like this, and had billet mounted at one point, but his was epoxied in, and he went on to tell me that his came loose...so...

crappy pics, everything is dirty...any input would be great.

Re: so - lets figure out how to mount this billet insert..

could you maybe spot weld screws on your hood, place billet over the screws, and use a nut and washer to secure it?

Re: so - lets figure out how to mount this billet insert..

thats kinda what i was thinking, only i had thought of welding strips of metal from the side hood supports, and have where i could drive a small screw into each end of the billet, the opening will only allow for 3 bars of billet, and the inserts i have are 4 bars, so that will help keep the screws concealed...plus...the hood bracing in the center of the hood, that comes from the front, i would weld a bracket, that would come straight back, and help support the center of the inserts

ms paint yo. sorta like so...

What if you use like 18ga steel and cut them into little strips, weld them around the opening under the hood, pop the billet insert in and fold the little strips , kind of like tabs to push against the insert to hold it up.

Re: so - lets figure out how to mount this billet insert..

that wouldn't be too bad really, other than the fact i don't want to have to redo my bodywork on the top side, and with welding directly to the hood, i'd have to redo it, and i hate having to work in that curve of the hood, gonna also try to clean up the bracing some more today, i went over and smoothed out the edges with the dremel when i cut them, but i'm just gonna break out the grinder, and really knock any sharp edges down...

i'm also thinking of cutting up the hood bracing i removed to make these brackets, so it all kinda ties in with the bracing thats still in there..

Re: so - lets figure out how to mount this billet insert..

welp...here goes phony cell phone pics...hood is not yet on, will probably do so before dark...but you get the idea...bracket pic especially sucked, was hard trying to hold the hood, and at the same time hold the camera far enough away to get a pic so you could basically see the whole thing...i'll get better pics up later..

not the prettiest, but it gets the job done, and its definately better than it looks from that pic...anyways, i'll toss in a tailgate pic for good measure, since i took it today..

sucky...i'd be willing to bet...i've gotta get a hood shipped to CA....for as cheap as possible, any ideas, i've never shipped anything freight, so i don't know the process or anything..

speaking of, heres a better pic of it from today also...sure beats those crappy cellphone pics..minus the poser orb in the middle.

all about the subtleness of it, for me...so yea, its staying black...i'd like to throw a few pinstripes on it for the time being for shits and giggles, just don't know of anyone local to do it.
