Shaving taillights on a fullsize step side
Alright we were discussing the best way on shaving the taillights on a 93 fullsize chevy stepside. I couldnt really come up with a great way that i figure would hold great and not have to worry about it cracking. Maybe its a simple answer and im just not thinking of it but any help would be great. The problem is the filler is metal, the side and bottom around the taillight on the bed is fiberglass but above the taillight is metal. I thought about just fiberglassing it in but im afraid it might not grip onto the metal strong enough to hold years down the road

My suggestion would be to weld the top where it's metal to metal, and use some 3M panel adhesive on the other areas. Be ready for sticker shock with the adhesive, it's like $30 for the tube is adhesive but $60 for the special gun for it. lol

yea we thougt about glueing it in. I know i use adhesive for alot of stuff at the shop but i've seen fillers glued in before and they have eventually start to ghost. I think i might have figured out a way but im still very open to suggestions

Re: Shaving taillights on a fullsize step side
I guess you dont have much of a choice, weld what you can and bond or fiberglass the rest. Have you checked on any full size forums to see what has been done before? If you are worried about the fillers pulling away you could always weld a stud to the backside of them and bolt in what can not be welded, this may be over kill tho

Re: Shaving taillights on a fullsize step side
well what i was thinking was to make backing plates out of metal and screw them into the tailight bucket in the spots that are fibergalss. then cut the fillers down a lil and weld to the back plates. Then just fill the gap in with some fibergel, duraglass. Best idea i've came up with so far

Re: Shaving taillights on a fullsize step side
i would say make fiberglass filler plates, be pretty easy u already have a mold
you say theres metal on top? i thought the sides were all glass and the inside was metal and the sides hang over the inside. |
