Shaved my tailgate, LOTS of pics from start to finish

I'm taking an autobody refinishing class at school ( Oakland Community College lol ) and I decided to shave my tailgate as my class project. Total time from start to finish was about 7 weeks, as I only had access to it one day a week. I probably have about 25ish hours into it total. But, I'll stop blabing now and get to the pictures :

Eww!

(I can't seem to find the pictures of the filler welded in... weird. But you all know what that looks like anyway... )

One coat of Metal2Metal filler

Roughed out, and a little hammer/dollie work on the highspots

First coat of Rage filler

Roughed out

Second coat or Rage

Third coat

Re: Shaved my tailgate, LOTS of pics from start to finish

The next week, DA'd with 1500 grit and a foam pad

Dirt nibs removed with a hard pad and 1500 on a DA

DA'd with 3000grit

Started buffing

Almost there!

And finally, the finished product :

Came out pretty damn good if you ask me... not bad for my first major bodywork mod ever!

Finished product looks pretty good for a first timer. For future reference remove the paint where you are spreading body filler, I noticed you have a lot of your metal2metal and rage ontop of paint.

Re: Shaved my tailgate, LOTS of pics from start to finish

Thanks. I had asked my instructor about that and he said that as long as the paint was properly prepped (as in roughed up with 80 grit) and the filler feathered out/didnt lift at the edges that it would be fine. For some reason the OEM paint was really thick and I would've had to remove it all if i didn't want filler to touch paint, lol

In this picture I can see shiney paint at the edge of your filler, Thus leading me to believe all the paint is not roughed up with 80 grit, Do yourself a favor and just remove the paint next time. And remember, There is a reason your teacher is an instructor at a community college and not out working in the trade.

Re: Shaved my tailgate, LOTS of pics from start to finish

I wasn't finished with that side when I took this pic.

And for the record, my instructor has been working in the business for 30 years. He's work for a lot of well know shops and has even done work as an advisor for Chrysler... he knows his shit.

So you spread filler over shiney paint. Why? I have wokred with guys that have been doing this for 40 years. A lot of them are hacks, been hacks for 40 years. Some used to be good, just don't care anymore.
Whatever, I see your going to make it far in this trade now that you have all this knowledge he gave you and don't need to listen to good advice that is actually correct. I mean, he did teach you how to warp a tailgate requireing the need for metal filler, regular body filler, and 2 different sessions of priming/blocking, all to have a tailgate that still has waves.. Your right. I stand corrected. Good work

where do you see it up to the shiny paint? if you're talking about the bottom edge, that looks like metal to me.

exactly.....remove it down to metal.....it's ok to have a bit of filler on top of featheredged factory primer.......it's ok to put glaze on top of paint, not filler.......

your instructor is an idiot....he should have taught you better..... there is no reason to have that much warpage......there is also no reason to have to prime and paint the entire gate...it should have been able to just be spotted in and blend the color.....

i know it is your first project and i am not bashing your work because someone taught you like that and made you think it was ok......

it is not ok....your instructor should be fired

buzz through the pics over here, that'll give you a visual on what it should look like:

For the record, I wasn't trying to be a dick, and yes for your first time it looks great. My point is, you are being taught WRONG. And since you were set on not believing me and assuming that your teacher knew everything I got a lil frustrated. So once again I'm sorry, the finished product looks great for your first try, and your instructor should not be instructing anyone and is wrong. You will find this to be true if you continue in this trade and go to work.

he's talking about from the bottom left to almost halfway up the tailgate.. and seeing thats its still shiny it didnt even feather edge right, I bet you could chip that right off with out much effort...

again like the others not being a dick just trying to help you out... the way I see it the guys who say it looks great are the dicks for not educating you ( or they just don't know what they're looking at)...

Re: Shaved my tailgate, LOTS of pics from start to finish

It looks like alot of filler, but its not more than 1/8th thick... and thats right over the filler plate because it was a little too small from SD. And for the record, the metal didn't get warped from me welding in the filler. I took a file to the paint before I even plugged the welder in to see if it was low already and it was.

And for you guys that keep pointing out the shiney paint on the bottom left corner, I WASN'T FINSISHED FEATHERING. Everything was feathered back to where the paint was roughed up/taken down to primer. My instructor is not an idiot... I'm not even going to go there because this seriously pisses me off.

well you can pass this message on to your instructor:

Sir,instead of introducing a new generation of hack body men into my trade i respectfully ask that you retire from teaching anymore.Clearly by looking at this picture here:

you can see the amount of paint and primer that has had body filler applied to it.Now i am all in favor of having a featheredge of filler applied on top of the featheredged factory primer, but clearly there is too much filler in this picture to apply on top of paint,no less.I know this was not stripped off before the next wipe and now you have created a sandwich of sub par substrates that the filler has been applied over. You should be teaching your students to strip the paint and primer completely off the panel when applying filler in this amount.

sincerely,

paint toad.
