Painting Rims

I am looking to clean up and then paint my rims. Below is a shot of one of them. Basic stock rims. At first I was thinking of just repainting silver in middle and around lip but after I blacked out my chrome trim on the truck I though a metallic black would look really good on the rims.

My question is what is the best way to prepare the rims for paint? I was thinking of sandblasting the rims but if I do so what type of primer should I use on them, then do I do paint and then clear? I know autozone sells rustolem rim paint but I don’t they carry a black metallic color in it. I really want something that will look nice but hold up to the road and not get chips in it after a year.

Re: Painting Rims

Prime them up...paint them a few coats thinly, then clear it...

Re: Painting Rims

I painted my wheels using 2 cans of black rustoleum, it cost me $4 and I didn't even bother to clear them, couple months later they still look good but they're no nearly as glossy, but they were free wheels so I dont care

Re: Painting Rims

Prep?...haha. I wiped mine down with simple green then hit them with some rustoleum primer and some nice bronze/gold rustoleum top coat...haha

...A little ghetto trick. Take some index cards and tuck them in around the edge of the rim and the tire...as ghetto as it is it keeps your rubber clean...

I was planning to get 2 more rims / tires from the j-yard, have them demounted and do those 2 first, once painted bring them to a shop and have then swap them for the rims I have on the car now since the rear tires are pretty much new and then do the same for the fronts, this way I can stil use the truck while I am painting. It is a 2nd car but I still use it a good chunck. Besides I have been wanting to get a full size spare and a local j-yard has then for $35 a rim from clunker overload.
