Question Need info on bed removal

I could ha ve sworn i saw a post on removing the bed from a second generation s10, but could not find it the second time a round. I just need to know how to get it off and on. How many screws and where? I have an 03 s10. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Need info on bed removal

8 big bolts hold it on
theres some ground wires back by the tails lights
take out the screws holding the filler neck on behind the gas door
get 3 or 4 guys and lift but be gentle, and youll need to lift it higher than you would think the first time

Re: Need info on bed removal

yeah take off the tailgate, it takes off alot of weight.
Its not that the bed is super heavy, its just you have to lift it high over the wheels.

Re: Need info on bed removal

they are not that heavy if it was not so big i could pick it up by myself with no problem. after its off i can move it a round by myself. but it makes it easier to pull it off if u tilt it after u pick it up to get over the wheels.

Re: Need info on bed removal

when i replaced my fuel pump (had a FULL tank of gas) i just ran a chain between the tie downs and used a tractor to lift it off. but then again not everyone has access to a tractor. came off easy but was a pain trying to realign by my self.

Re: Need info on bed removal

well...to answer the question he asked rather than arguing how easy it is to lift off by yourself...there are four frame to box bolts on each side..2 are in front of the wheel between frame and outter body, and the other two are behind the wheel in the frame rail...very easy to spot all these bolts. the frame will have a hole in it for access to these bolts. The wiring harness can be unclipped from the bumper, and there are 2 ground bolts, 1 on either side in frame rail near rear bolt you remove. then remove the bolts holding the rear quarter panel to the bumper....it should flex enough when pulling box off so u dont have to remove bumper...dont forget the fuel neck bolts on fuel filler cap....thats bout it...not bad at all...couple buddies and your golden

Re: Need info on bed removal

just have 3 people......one at each wheel well and one on the driver's side front to keep the bed from hitting the cab and to guide in the filler neck......

it's alot safer that way unless you want to say: 'oh i did it myself but i ****ed my paint up and dented the back of the cab.....'

word... it is a lot easier to have that 3rd person guide the filler neck in!

Re: Need info on bed removal

be careful make sure every one is smart and doesn't walk away and says you don't need the bed off

spray them with wd40 before you start and loosen them then use air tools

Re: Need info on bed removal

Going from stepside to fleetside (or fleetside to stepside) is the same as changing beds out.

Only difference is you WILL have to change the filler neck as they are bed specific.

Re: Need info on bed removal

There are 8 bolts to remove the bed. I have an 03 ZR2. If you have a towing package, 6 of the bolts can be removed by an impact gun w/ various extensions. The 2 that are the furthest back will have to be removed by a socket and breaker bar as the towing package bolts use the opening through the frame needed to reach them. There are ground wires on both sides of the frame. The truck will start but then shut off in a few seconds once removing the grounds and disconnecting the wire harness which you have to do to be able to lift the bed off. Dropping the spare tire and removing the tailgate makes this process a lot easier. It only takes 2 people to lift the bed off. After removing the bed, pay special attention to the area underneath the bed where the spare tire sits. Dirt and grim gets in there and cant get washed out. The cross member above the spare tire on my truck was completely rusted through. Be sure to remove the 3 gas filler neck bolts around the gas cap also.
