?Major? Screw up with my paint...

My father mixed 16 oz of mid temp hardener and 6 oz of base coat activator in 3 quarts of paint, and no reducer. He thought the activator for my clear coat was the reducer.

When I got home the door jams were already sprayed with the paint and looks good, but it's just the jams so I can't really tell how the rest of the paint will react.

Is this fixable or is my paint ruined? (Keeping in mind I'm a broke as hell student)... Can I or should I reduce the mixture as it is? Or just spray it as is?

All of the paint/clear/reducers are Nason brand from Napa...

IFA-USQT Paint (x3) - Metallic Grey from the 09 Ford Ranger...
441-21-USQT Reducer
483-78-USGAL Clear
483-78-USQT Mid Temp Hardener
483-30-USHPT F-T B Coat Activator

Why is Napa selling Nason? Weird. If you paint has been sitting with hardner mixed in it for longer than the pot life then its no good. Buy more paint, read the mixing ratio, and try again.

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

Guy at Napa seems to think it'll be alright...

And it's Napa in Canada, maybe that's why they carry Nason? I donno.

No, it's not allright! If the hardener and activator has been mixed with the paint it's good for about 2 hours, or something like that. Look at the specs for "pot life". That's why they sell the little ratio cups, you can mix up just enough to spray, then save the rest for later. You never mix up all your stuff at once. You've just learned an expensive lesson.

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

Well that's a shit deal for me... I don't have $400.00 to spend on another mix, and unfortunately even though it's my Dad's fault he's not going to be ponying up the money either. He just spent $300 getting the CV joints replaced in my driveshaft.

...Worst thing about it is the door jams are already painted grey, the rest of my truck is cherry red.

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

*update*

The paint did in fact turn to shit... BUT, My dad ended up springing for some more... and this time I did the mixing.

The result is a decent paintjob, but it has some dust in it... I wish I could have had it professionally painted, but in order to pay for the new paint we had to spray it ourselves.

I really like the color tho.

Probably wait until after the winter to wet sand / buff it... Maybe get someone to re-clear? Is this possible?

Or is there any other advise for having dust in the clear? Obv I don't have the money to scrap the paint job, but if that's what needs to happen let me know, you guys were right before...

BTW it's a DD...

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

Dirt in the clear is just a fact of life. Even if you sanded it down and paid for it to be recleared in a booth. You would have a lot less dirt, but some sanding and buffing would still need to be done. How many coats of clear did you put on? I wouldn't wait, and would buff it now.

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

yea if you wait a few months then buff it the clear will be hella hard. You'll spend alot longer doing it a few months down the then it would take to do it right after it has cured

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

wet sand and buff it soon I waited a month to wet sand and buff mine and it was a b*tch to do. Took forever to sand it out. Alittle dirt and dust in the clear is normal, ecspecially since you did it in your garage. Some of the dirt and dust will buff out tho.

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Yep. It's an hombre bed. Got a killer deal on it... Here's my old one:

I put 3 coats of clear on.

I probably still can't do the sanding and buffing now, although I'm sure it will be more difficult after the wait... I don't have a buffer to do the work or the time...
I'm moving out of the province for a job and won't be paid until a month from now.

Why did you cut your old bed in half?

Re: ?Major? Screw up with my paint...

Alright, so I ended up going out and getting some compounds and I'm trying to get a loan of a buffer now... So I may get the paint sorted out after-all.

The old bed was cut in half because I had no way to get it to the metal recycling dump except for my Dad's Avalanche... The bed on the avalanche is pretty useless, was the only way to fit it in there.

No worries to anyone who thinks I cut up a good bed. Both sides and fenders were rotted out, all the bed rails were rusted out, there were holes in the bedfloor, etc...
