how to: suicide hood 2nd Gen
OK here it is as promised, not too many pics to go along but i'll talk you through it. It's very
simple to do heres what you will need: Hood hinge out of a mid 80's buick le sabre and all mounting hardware Welder Tape measure Tubing cutter, a sawzall will also work but you cuts will not be as straight OK first things first, you need to do is take a measurement of the width of where you will be mounting the hinge on the truck. If i remember it's like 2 and a quarter inches or so that you need to narrow the hinge. I did this by cutting the bar in the long section and welding it back together there. Pic: After you have done this it is time to mount the assembly to the fenders. There is a hole down on the lower part of the frame where you can line up the hole on the top of the bracket to. I'll try and snap a picture of this tomorrow. Then just drill a hole for the bottom one and bolt it in. The bottom of the bracket should be about 1/4" away from the radiator/front support. I took the time to make a weld between the bracket and there for added rigidity. You will also need to reinforce where you bolted the hinge to. This is easily done with a piece of flat steel welded between there and the front support. Now that the hinge is mounted to the truck, you will need to cut the middle bar off once again, so that you can rotate it and weld it back together so it will clear all the hose lines and such under the hood. pics of welds: I dont know if it's necessary but i took the spring off the hood and welded it to the core support and removed the secondary latch, because they would rub the bumper. A little modification to the stopper on the hinge will allow it to swing out further. Once this is done, it's time to start to attach the hood to the hinges. I personally dont have fenderwells in my truck so i just layed the hood down, pushed the hinges up onto the hood and tac welded them in place. Then I put a nice bead all around the bracket. I will take measurements if anyone would like so u can just measure and weld it in place. Once this is done, close your hood and make sure everything sits flush, There was alot of massaging i had to do under the hood for it to sit flush and i assume it will be different for every truck due to mounting variations. Good luck trying this on your own truck, hope this helps a little bit. |

![]() THANK YOU!!!! **Edit** Location of where the bracket is mounted to the hood would be very helpful. Also, what you did to keep it from flying up in the rear, by the front windshield. Last edited by Bagged4MyPleasure : 02-17-2005 at 07:16 PM. |

Re: how to: suicide hood 2nd Gen
Did you have to relocate the fuse box, coolant reserve and ECM? Or is this a factor only on 4cyls?

Re: how to: suicide hood 2nd Gen
you know I may consider doing this later on down the road. From the hardware needed, it don't look that expensive, as most things, the install will be the most costly

Re: how to: suicide hood 2nd Gen
Ok, here are the pics I have so far. Had to do some fabbing. If you look at one of Y2K's pics, there is a gap, or lower section of the hood on the drivers side and he welded to part of that but unsure where on the back side of the hinge, because you cant see it and there is nothing to weld too there. So I fabbed up a filler piece for there so I could weld the hinge too it.
My bro Jay and I also reworked the drivers side taillight. Click thumbnail for larger pic. Thats all the pics I have right now. Need to get the dust cleaned off at lunch and take some more pics. Got finished to late last night.....Also, my hood hits the tops of my hinges, so I need to lower it with some washers. Ill get pics later. |
