Re: how to do a suicide hood?

well boys and girls, as of 3:00 pm cali time, my 02' s10 trucks hood commited hood suicide. saw this thread about a month ago and wanted it done, hit up pick-a-part this morning and found about 30 of these hood hinges. removed the torx screws, took an additional set of bolts from other cars (just in case i need more) hit the gate, $19.80 out the door. got home, cut the middle rod exactly 4" and re-welded it together. i moved the fuse box out 3 inches (drivers side), and moved the ecu back 2 1/2 inches, (pass. side). battery is still in the stock place. its cake, about 3 1/2 hours from start to finish. will post some pics of it soon, and as far as a parts list,
1. 85' buick le sabre hinge assembly
2. 1/4 drill bit(for bolt hole anchors)
3. grinder (to knock the welds down)
4.welder (approximately 5 minutes)
5. jig saw with metal cutting blade (to cut the cross bar)
6. 1/2", 10mm, 12mm, 7/16, wrenches (depending on your bolt hardware)
7. have a tank of gas ready to roll draggin' that ass around town, and dep inside youll know that wherever you stop and kick it, you can clown the next guy with the literally "stock" looking hood,. it is really an awesome mod. and to those who have done the work, HATS OFF TO YA BRO'S!!!! to those who want it, JUS DO IT!!!

Re: how to do a suicide hood?

· Acquire a hinge assembly from a mid 80's Buick le sabre. (Local junk yard has em $20.00-ish) Grab the stock bolts (4) and frame clip nuts (4) you remove, you’ll need em.

· You’ll have to cut 4” out of the cross bar that connects the new hinges, then weld it back together like it was stock. (This will allow you to bolt it inside the fender rails in the later steps)

· AutoZone sells "a" frame clip nuts (red pkg.) in the "HELP"isle. grab 2 pkgs of them. (part # 03954) approx. $5.00

· With your hood still on your truck, measure back from the hood/fender gap 17 ½” & pencil mark it, then measure back another 5 ¼” and pencil another mark.

· Now, from the first mark, measure in 2 ½” and mark it, then measure in 3” from the rear mark and mark it. (These will be the hole locations for the hood hinge bolts)

· Now remove & flip the hood over and now transfer these marks to the underside of the hood support, they will be the hole locations for the new hardware.

· Drill the holes with a ¼ “ drill bit & use the frame clip nuts to the inside of the hood support. (BE CAREFUL NOT TO DRILL THROUGH THE HOOD SUPPORT INTO YOUR HOOD SKIN) !!!

· Now you need to remove the 3 bolts that secure the fuse box and move it inward (toward the engine) 1 1/2 “ (until the outer hole lines up with the inner screw hole) replace the screw. (This will be the only screw holding the fuse box now)

· Move to the pass. Side and remove the 3 screws that hold the e.c.u. And cut the inner and rear screw mounts off the tray that holds the e.c.u. Move the e.c.u. back 2 3/4 “ and self-tap a screw through the front mount tab into the radiator reservoir. (This will be the only screw that will hold your e.c.u. now)

· Steps 8 and 9 are required to allow the new hinges to retract into the fender area.

· Now measure from the front-most point of the inner fender bolt location (where the fender bolts to the truck) back 9” and mark a hole. (There should be a rubber hood support you can remove) and use that hole. Then measure back toward the front 5 ¼”. These are the hole locations for the hinge bolts. Use the 1/4 “ bit to drill the holes.

· Remove the springs from the hinges (this will help while mounting the hinges) and place the “a” frame clips from the original assembly to the hood hinges. Now mount the hinges to the under-lip of the fender holes you just drilled and screw bolt through the hole you drilled into the “a” clips. (Ill find a pic. To try & help you out.)

· Now you can bolt up the hood to the hinges using the "a" frame clip nuts from AutoZone. The hood hinges have a square hole punched into it for ease of adjustment. (a lot of people weld the hinges to the hood, but I used the clips for ease of adjustment)

· You’ll want to remove the spring that “pops” your hood and the finger catch because when you are done, they will hit your bumper.

· Now take a few minutes to align the space between the fender and hood so it looks stock, then show your new mod. Top your friends, they’ll be blown away, and you can say it was all you, not a kit!!

Ive tried to post pics to help, but they didnt post, so email me and ill send em to ya................

Im guessing that is location on the hood WHEN CLOSED where the brackets line up on the hood.

Im not sure what I got for measurements. I just attached it at the bottom, then closed the hood and marked it from underneath where the bracket sat. I had to make a filler plate, because I welded those brackets instread of bolting them.

You should add, IF you dont have welder to weld the cross member back together, then you can get some metal/pvc piping, just bigger then the cross member to hold it together......till u you can get it welded that is.

Send me the pics, Ill host em for you if you want bro.

Re: how to do a suicide hood?

BTW, ive had my hinges for over a year now, been patiently waiting for someone to do it a 2nd Gen. Must say it came out good, just doesnt "float" like the 1st gen does, so gotta figure out how to prop it at show so it doesnt scratch my bumper and grill.

I used the pre-existing hole in the fender where that forward "bump stop" was. Then drilled a new hole for the other hole location, not to far off the rad support. That could be part of the reason why I dont float, the hinge sits forward some.....The end of the bracket is like 1/4" or so form rad support. and the little arc thing at the end sits on rad support. if that makes sense.

*shrugs* (thought we had an icon for that, but guess not). Not really sure. Im did it on my goodmark hood, so maybe its heavier then the stock hood or something, or the hinges are fruther forwrd then the first gen. Guess is as good as mine. I followed Y2k's instructions.

Re: how to do a suicide hood?

ok so i drilled my new holes in the fender, i am now wondering is there any problems with the hoog closing after its installed and the bolts or screws are in place? and on a second gen the middle rod how does it work with the AC tubes? oh and i was wondering if ticket magnet could show how he actually bolted the hinges to the hood itself, i saw pics of the fenders and the bolts but not of the hood.

U might have to shim the hinges down from the fender some, like I did. Also, the hinge, goes underneath the lip of the fender that you are bolting the bracket too. I had to remove my stock airbox for crossmember to work, because I did not cut and turn the member after it was mounted. Not sure on the AC...sorry.

In Y2K's how to he, mounted the bracket after he iniitially cut 4" off the crossmember. Then once mounted, he cut it again near the ends and turned it some to clear stuff and re welded.....make sense now? Sorry for confusion.

Re: how to do a suicide hood?

Bagged4mypleasure,, I think your hood don't float cause you have the hinges to far forward? I think from what everything has been said, or not said, is that when you open your hood and bring it forward, the hinges hit the rad support,, thus supporting the hood,, I think that's how it's supposed to go,, could be wrong though.

Me? Its not hard to open at all. Just when closing I gotta watch it, cause it likes to twist a little and come down on the fender if im not careful. But its all good. Im happy with it.

Hey Bagged4MyPleasure... if you want your hood to "float" without smackin the bumper its pretty damn easy. Just use a small bolt and 2 nuts to make your own "bumpstop" instead of the old rubber peice.

Re: how to do a suicide hood?

i must be a retard on this or something...i just got my hinges today and i was outside playing with it. i was reading between both of you guys how to's. i like the idea of bolting the hood to the hinge rather than welding it...but question is (its probably been answered) on the part that bolts to the fender, the bottom of the hinges seems like it would hit my fuse box and on the other side it would hit my little metal box (no idea the name of it) ... so cant i just cut the bottom of the hinge off? and i just plain dont get how to latch it without using hood pins...i know im retarded

Well, I didnt have either of those to move, but most likely you might have to relocate that stuff (move it down some maybe?). As for it latching, I used the stock bolts that are located on each side of the glass, cut a "slit" in the mounting location and when the hood shuts, it slides over those bolts and stays in place.

You dont have that bolt? How does the hood open? There is suppose to be a plastic peice there which is part of the wiper cowl. Take off and there is a bolt there that the hood opens on (rotates as hood opens)...then I just cut it out on one side, so it slides over the bolt.

Re: how to do a suicide hood?

see i think i understand pretty much everything on the how to, but i know once i try it im gonna run into something...and i just checked where the latch goes, and i found it on my hood...in the picture it looks big as hell lol thats why i didnt recognize it...
so it latches on both sides or just one? and the bar connecting the suicide hinges - it runs across the engine...or radiator support?

"And cut the inner and rear screw mounts off the tray that holds the e.c.u."

do you have any pics of this or can be more specific?
