Flat black with gloss red racing strip... how do it do it?

So i'm repainting my truck in probably like 2-3 months. I saw a magazine article with a flat black ferrari that had a gloss red strip down the center. How would i go about pulling something like that off?

The current picture i posted is not the same as the one i saw in the maxim magazine.

Re: Flat black with gloss red racing strip... how do it do it?

paint it flat black, wait awhile and mask off your stripe and spray it. You will have a nice big edge on your stripe. Or you could spray the red first, cover up where you want your stripe and then spray the black..

If it was me, I'd probably experiment and try somthing. Spray both colors in base and clear everything with a flat clear. Then mask off the black and buff the red stripe.. I wonder how that would work. Might be hard to keep the tape on the edge of the stripe when buffing, but I think it would be possible..

ive tried that before with good success, you just have to be gentle with the buffer over the tape, vinyl fine line tape seems to stay down better than masking tape does

I would try like i did on my buddies neon. I used base/clear RM paint, taped off the lettering and designs, scuffed it up really good, prep, than shot with urethane.
I would think you could spray your truck with a enamel or urethane flat black then tape off your stripes and scuff and shoot with a enamel or urethane in red.
I'm not sure if you could do a base/clear unless you based red, layed the stripes, then shot black, intercoat clear, then layed flat clear, let it dry, then tape it up and spray regular clear over the stripes. But a possible huge clear tape line.

A head scratcher with base-clear......

i've never tried this but it that would be the route i'd experiment with.....as long as the flat clear doesn't flatten back out over time then this is the way to go without having....'THE LEDGE'

well i was hoping to go ghetto and use Hotrodflatz. And i was going to use a single stage red.

So your say the best route is to shoot the red. Then mask off and shoot black?

Re: Flat black with gloss red racing strip... how do it do it?

shoot red, mask off stripes, then shoot black, spray the whole thing with flat clear, then use fine line tape to mask off the black, exposing the red stripe...now gently buff the red stripe being especially careful around the tape line as it will lift... the result should be a gloss red stripe on a flat black paint job, with no nasty paint edges. that is if i understood maverick and toad correctly.

it doesnt look right.

easiest way. ive done this shit a few times.

shoot ur hood red. and roof if ur doing that. colorsand and buff the areas that need to be hit. then back mask that (after about a week u dont want to tape track the fresh clear) sand around hood, scotchbrite edge. go onto paint, shoot adhesion promoter on the edge. shoot ur ss flat black, and on last coat immediately unmask after it sets for about a min or so, this will help take away a little definition.

or a little more advanced... yet most durable...

shoot ur entire truck black with red stripe. clear it normal. color sand and buff red. back mask the red and prep the whole truck. shoot either one double coat (if ur good) of flat clear, or 2 medium. unmask right after last coat(flat clear kicks fast) now u have a better finish cuz u have an ultra smooth surface to spray the clear, it will lay down better over a sanded clear and will show less dust. it will leave less an edge. and if u soo choose later u can sand the flat clear and recler normal.

u can see what i did with the flake. try and figure out the steps i did. lol.
