Re: do i need to?
there are bolts in the bed, you should weld it, and you can weld it from the inside, but be careful.

Re: do i need to?
I know someone is going to hate me for saying this, but I will anyway. You can get to that spot from under the truck when you jack it up, I know because I did the same thing about 6 years ago the day I bought my s10! Sure welding that up is the right thing to do, but that would be a real PITA. I slapped a couple pieces of quality duct tape over that hole and it hasn't rusted yet. Just spray or brush some paint over the bare metal first and don't worry about it, you would be suprised how much rust protection a piece of tape can provide. Also, you simply can't see this area from anywhere but under your truck. Alright, now someone will call me an idiot...

Do it the right way like you were going too. Dont listen to the whole using tape BS. Dont hack your truck. Live and learn from your mistake and move forward not backwards.

Re: do i need to?
If you don't believe me, take a piece of bare metal and put a piece of tape on it, then let it outside for a couple months in the rain. When you pull that tape off let me know what you find under it. Unlike a lot of people on here I'm actually speaking from experience, and I'm giving you the best answer in YOUR situation. And what do I mean by that??? Well the OP is asking how to fix this and so far hes worried about taking the bed off, which is the least of his worries if hes going to try welding this himself. If he does actually get his bed off, and find a way to weld this hole shut, then hes going to have to PROPERLY prep that weld, properly seal that fresh weld, and paint it yet with real paint. The cost of materials and time is going far beyond what he wanted to get into to put a damn sub box in, and if that hole isnt welded and finished perfectly its going to rust out WAY FASTER than a small hole in the back of his cab with some tape over it. If anyone feels like calling BS on this again I will take pics of my cab from 6 years ago that still has no rust on it.

Re: do i need to?
I'll tell you the "right way" to do it also just so you can choose for yourself. Start by taking the bolts out of the bed floor, 4 or 6 bolts I forget. Remove the tail lights/ license plate lights and the wiring harness. Also remove the gas fill tube. Set that off somewhere and begin to grind your sheetmetal area that needs welding, flaten it with hammer/dolly if you need to. Once thats ready to go get yourself a small mig welder, with gas. Have someone hold a piece of copper bar inside the cab behind the hole so you can fill it in with weld. The weld wont stick to the copper. After your hole is tacked shut use a small grinder to smooth out your weld and check for any holes, finish welding as needed. Alright, after your weld is ground nice and smooth you can move onto paint. You cant see this spot so just sand what you need to with some 80 grit and mask off everything you don't want painted. Use either Epoxy primer, or Etching primer on the bare metal. You can talk to your local paint supplier for info on how to use either of these. After you prime you can finish up with some paint of your choice, also from the paint supplier and not a spray can. Make sure you paint the inside also, just to be safe.

Re: do i need to?
you guys are cute, but wrong. The problem with "doing things right" is just that most people dont have a ****ing clue what they are doing and make shit 100 times worse. In this case I told him to slap some tape on it, because his other best option is to pay out the ass and have a professional, like me, do it for him. Sorry, but unless you have or know someone with all the tools you will need to do this right, its not worth doing yourself.
