Carbon Fiber Hood

Got a customer with a carbon fiber hood and its been cleared before now some of the edges are peeling and the rest of the clear on it does't look all that good, crap in it and some dull spots. I was thinkg blocking it w/ 320 since its kind of wavey, then 320da, finish it in 400 and reclear? Any other ideas or has anyone cleared a carbon fiber hood? Someone around here sayed he used an adesion promter after he did graphics to help the clear stick.

Re: Carbon Fiber Hood

it's probably ruined....even if you get the delamming clear to featheredge out,you will still have a halo when you reclear it....and 320 blocking will not straighten 'waviness' and if you could block it and break through the resin it would be ruined anyway

don't even touch it...it's a no win situation unless you paint it,which is not an option if he wants the carbon fiber look

Re: Carbon Fiber Hood

i dont have any experience with CF body parts, but i can say that just like joe said, you will probably see the halo in the old clear, the only way around that would be to sand the old clear completely off the entire sirface, but thats risky as you could possibly break through the gel coat

if i had to do it, it would only be for a friend and it would have a "no gaurentee" stipulation attached to it

Re: Carbon Fiber Hood

carbon is not that more dificult than fiberglass, with the exception if you break threw the gel coat it will screw the fibers up. if you keep going down iwith a fine grit till its all smooth and respray a gel coat then clear it it may turn out ok I still would tint the clear if its on a black car or even tint it a little anyways. I had clear problems on my bmw from the factory i should of shipped it back but it took them 3 hoods to get one to me in one piece(fed ex retards tryied moving the box around by them selves and kept dropping them.) so I had to do a little work my self on my hood and bmw carbon is not cheep let me tell ya. but worth ever cent. dropped 30+lbs off my hood. if i was you id try ****ing with it and if it turns out like shit it was prob trashed any ways but you will have the experiance of working with it. most boating places can get the reson and hardner

Re: Carbon Fiber Hood

if you tards read what i said it reflects what he said. except i would try ****ing with it because even if it has a halo it can be tinted or painted and its still a light weight hood! I got more carbon fiber on my m3 bmw than metal. and I made most of it my self so when it comes to carbon I do have a clue. Im not a body guy by nature but I do know enough. there is only one real way to learn body work and thats hands on if you dont try, you dont learn! there for id say go for it if the hoods shot then there is nothing to loose but a little time and material but the know how is priceless.

exactly, like i said earlier, if it was for a friend, i wouldnt have a problem messing with it in my free time, but if its a paying "by the book" job at the shop than i probably wouldnt touch it... if i did, it would strictly be a "i do this once and youre gonna be happy with it" sorta thing, no warranty

ive seen stuff like this come back to bite shops in the ass, you try to help someone out and you end up getting burned

Re: Carbon Fiber Hood

oh ya as a shop deal RR is always the way to go you end up saving a but load of time and pull more profit. there in and out an warranty isnt a issue, with something like that its going to take you a while and the labor will exceed the cost of replacement 10 fold but if it was something that is out of production or custom then it may be worth dicking with but from a shop stand point ya buy a new one. but if it was something like you said for a friend our your self then maybe.
