Re: Best way to tint taillights...Post Pics

Well I just did a pair of old ones I had laying around just for giggles using R/C tint and Duplicolor clear. If you ask me I think they turned out great... But I'll let you guys be the judge.

I didn't want to do them super dark that way I won't have to worry about getting hassled by the cops if I decide to use them.

Kevin

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was.
Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

It'll happen to you...

R/C tint and rattle can clear....
First time;

Second time: I redid them because I was stupid the first time and used R/C clear coat - yeah, bad idea....So this time I used duplicolor and made them darker...sorry about the crappy pic, i've only had them done like this about a week, and this is the only pic i've got(from my cell earlier tonight)...there is even something reflecting on the light in this pic too

Re: Best way to tint taillights...Post Pics

Ok i dont know hwat happend, but i got VHT nightshade and i used them for my brothers taillghts on his 01 sonoma. I first used 800 gritt sandpaper to scuff up the lens, than i washed all the excess stuff that will not allow the paint to stick to the lenses. I did my coats to where i want it to be as dark as it is. I let them sit over night, so than 20 mins ago, i use 2000gritt paper and wetsand them, they have scuff marks inthem, which i figured werent a big deal, and when they dried, all it was was smooth. So i used my ''black magic Liquuid wax'' i use for waxing his truck and it did not come out like i wantd. They are still flat looking and i am lost.

How do you all get yours so shinny? I think i read that you dont clear them with VHT nightshade spray, but i could be wrong. ANy help would be appreciated, its a little surprise for my bro when he gets back from work related stuff in NJ tomrrow.

you can expect wax to bring a sanded surface back to a shine... get some RUBBING COMPOUND. i prefer 3m extra cut, then follow with 3m swirl mark remover, then wax.

i asked my friend that has his own shop how he does it and told him what you said, he said thats partially true. What he said is you can get away with using 10 or 20% of base in the total amount of clear to get your color but anymore will result like you described above.

I am sure this has been asked a lot, but are there any laws as to how much you can tint tails or anything like that?

by law in most states you are not supposed to do anything to them to reduce the visibility of your taillight... tinting them in most states is technically illegal

you can tint your lights legaly.... but if you do tint them you have to put some type of reflector on the back of the car. the reason its illegal is because when you tint them you cover up the reflector that is in the taillight, which is required by law.

i did tinted 03 silverado taillights and put them in my 01 silverado and i just sanded them with 1000 grit wetsand paper, mixed black base with clear and sprayed em and they turned out great and ive done a ranger, a cougar, and another silverado and they all turned out great

heres my truck

you could even put another coat of just clear on em so you could wet sand out any flaws

ya but what manufacture says mix basecoat with the clear for a durable finish?

not to mention with mixing it with basecoat, u can have wayyyyyyyy more control of the shade of black u are going with.

Re: Best way to tint taillights...Post Pics

i have done many sets of tail lights with the vht niteshades, and then i clear them with ppg's dc3000 clear.

i wet sand them with 800, niteshade, then clear.

if you dont clear niteshades, it chalks up and is flat finish and looks hack.

here are the examples of my method on my vehicles.

I have a black '04 (4dr) Blazer so I think tinted tails would look awesome. I just need to find a spare set in case I mess them up.

Wow they cut the wires and all... damn would have taken what, 10 seconds longer to turn the bulbs out?

Bad thing about stealing stuff like that its easy to spot when you see them on another truck.

Re: Best way to tint taillights...Post Pics

i chose to have the flames like that bc they flow with the taillight... they probably got tired of trying to figure out how to take them out (they were tough getting out) but it was a clean cut so they knew what they were doing... plus the bulbs i had were high intensity so that they would be bright enough to be seen during the day... total lose probably $250...
