The 487th overhead console question

I done looked at over 60post about this. But most are 2+ years old and most of the links are down.
So here is what I found, I need to know if i'm on track. The car in question is a 2001 grand am. This is going to be my winter project.

1. The long 98+ console has the compass built into it.

2. The short 98+ one needs the bracket for the compass to work.

3. If it has an "off" button it's the simple outside temp and compass. If it has a mode button it has trip miles and what nots.

4. With the simple console all i need is a outside temperature senor.

5. With the other one, I need to run a VSS line right?

anything else I'm missing?

Re: The 487th overhead console question

i have the long one in my blazer and mode button cycles through temp/compass,avg economy, instant econ, range , avg speed, and off so i would guess its tied into the computer in various spots, i THINK the shorter one with the compass/temp only just needs power and maybe the temp sensor

Re: The 487th overhead console question

One for a 98+ would be good. For both the simple one and the one with the trip.

Re: The 487th overhead console question

For either the basic disply or the extended one you will need to tap the vss

Re: The 487th overhead console question

Taping the vss is no problem. My car has the class data 2 system. From my learning the 98+ ones will work with that system right?

right now I'm eyeing a long one out of a 2000 S10 Blazer. It only has temp and compass that is fine with me.

Re: The 487th overhead console question

how hard would it be to install the small one on a truck that doesn't have it?
