Here's some options that I've found (aside from buying/modifying the OEM mounting covers <link>):
- Encapsulate it in a generic $3 ABS box, easily obtainable from an electronic component store. The bottom can be left open. This will simulate the protection the LVQ-212 gets in an OEM application. It will be water proof from above. Ballast vent has free air passage down the sides of ballast.
- Dip entire ballast with cables connected in Plasti Dip. Use paint tape to cover vent between the 12V power plug and high voltage wire during dipping. It must not be blocked under normal operation. Components inside creates some heat and without a vent a pressure buildup and condensation might occur.
- If you do not have the time for any of examples above, mount ballast vertically with connectors facing down.

Re: Project projector... (HID)

I think I have the water issue solved. Took a plastic tray out of one of my parts bins and cut it up to fit around the ballast. About 1/4 of the bottom is open so it should be enough to vent.

The kit I purchased included the black plastic covers. I think combining those with the clear covers should keep them dry.

Aight, sorry for the nOOb question but what are the resistors for? I didn't see them on either diagram. Did you use them? If so where do they go?

Thanks,

I used a resistor to plug into the Automatic Headlamp Sensor in order to disable it. That way the headlights won't come on automatically everytime it is dark. There is a sticky at the top of the electrical forum showing how to do it.

Cool. I'd like to see how other people do these in different styles of headlight buckets.

------------------------------------------------

I got everything put back together yesterday and tried them out last night, and I didn't like it. One of the projectors was a couple of degrees off and the flare from the ECE cut-off shields was too high. I was worried about blinding people to the right of me. So I tore both headlights back apart and rotated the one projector a bit and used some aluminum tape to flatten my cut-off line. I am much happier with the results I got tonight. Onto the pics...

I used my 97 S-10 truck for the "stock lighting" pics since it still has the factory lighting on it. All of the following pics were with the camera on a tripod in the same position. The vehicles were parked in the same position as well.

Stock lighting - Low Beams

HID lighting - Low Beams

Stock lighting - High Beams

HID lighting - High Beams

Stock lighting - Low Beams

HID lighting - Low Beams

Stock lighting - High Beams

HID lighting - High Beams

Overall I am quite happy with the new lighting. Is it worth the money for most people, probably not. But it does offer a huge increase in visibility and a touch of class for trucks that are at the bottom of the price range. I am extremely pleased at the output of the HIR bulbs that I used for the high-beams. These things put out an amazing amount of light in a reflector housing. The only downfall is they still have the yellowish-white color of a halogen bulb.

It kinda looks like the ballast accepts the 9006 plug, is that true?

Re: Project projector... (HID)

Good Deal. I'm starting up the Wiring harness as soon as I receive the parts I ordered today. I'll have some time between now and HID, so it's good news that I can use the 9006 without having to fab it again later.

I do the backs of the wheels with the powerball but all front surfaces are done by hand. I try and do them every two weeks during the warm months.

Jebus, that's like $50 worth of polish!

The HIDs look awesome!

Did you have any problems aiming them?

The one headlight housing is still a little crooked(where the bracket meets the housing). Cheap Taiwann parts. I have to re-attach and straighten that out but aiming them was a breeze. As long as the projector is sitting squarely in the housing, they can be adjusted with the factory screws.

The rule of thumb is that from 25 feet away, the top of the cut-off line should be 2" below the height of the projector.

Dude, you've just blown me away with this thread. My hat is off to you sir. What an amazing job you did on this project. I wish I had the time, and the patience to do a fab like this. I also wish someone would market a kit, complete, for our trucks.

In any event, I just wanted to recognize you for this. Great job!

Re: Project projector... (HID)

Thanks guys. I just picked up some more parts to do a fog light set-up in my bumper. A Bosch Projector (early-00 BMW's) and 3000K Phillips bulbs. This time around I'll have to make a housing for the projector to sit in so it should be more informative to GMC owners who don't have a projector housing available like the 98-up S-10's.

It'll be a couple of weeks before I start on it but I hooked everything up to make sure it all works. Took a few pics...

ive got a 97 s-10 wit the blazer (compostie) lights, do that make anything to do it "right" without a projector or do i have to run a projector to make it look right?
