Re: Project projector... (HID)

I hooked up one of the bulbs to a portable battery pack to try them out. I noticed that the adaptor plate I made earlier was to thick to be sitting between the cut-off shield and the lense. I was getting a large flare from it. So I moved the adaptor plate to the back of the projector and stuck 1 washer on each corner between the lense and the cut-off plate. This gave the cut-off line a bit more color.

Here was a finished pick of the halo. I cut the mount off and smoothed the entire area over again to help reduce the light at the top.

Re: Project projector... (HID)

Hey man. Did you buy a complete retro kit from hidplanet, or just piece some things together?
If you got the retro kit, which one did you get?

Since I was new to this, I bought the Valeo kit. The second one on the kit page. I figured it would work a lot better then me trying to piece something together and not knowing what I was doing.

They didn't have a choice on the website but you might be able to e-mail them and choose. They say all their kits come with something between 4100k-6000k. Mine is almost completly white with just a hint of blue so I would say its closer to the 4100k. It's wild, when you first power it up, it's really blue but as it warms up it turns into an intense white.

All you would need is the projector housings. You would probably have to modify the projector housing to be compatible with your bulbs (base of the bulb, distances between bulb and cutoff shield or cutoff shield to lense, etc.).

Since you don't have projectors now, you probably have a D2R bulb. The following was taken from HIDPlanet...

So now that you know about kelvin and some aspects of the bulbs, you might be wondering why you hear the terms D2R or D2S. Well, to put it very simply to you, D2R is a HID bulb that was designed for HID reflector housings. It has a different base than a D2S and also has a painted portion on the bulb itself. Why is it painted you ask? The paint is there to block certain areas of the bulb that would cause excessive glare in the housing. Does the paint affect bulb performance? Yes. A 4100k D2R has slightly less lumen than a 4100k D2S. Can a D2R be converted to a D2S? Yes. You would have to make a notch in the base of the bulb to match that of a D2S. you would also need to delicatly remove the painted portion of the bulb so that it would be completely visible just like a D2S. So enough about a D2R ehh, lets talk about the D2S for a sec. The D2S was designed soley for a HID projector applications. They are completely clear and give out the most efficiency of the two. Thats pratically all there is in difference between those two bulbs Below are some pics of both.

Re: Project projector... (HID)

it's about damn time someone decided to do HIDs the right way. i hate browsing HID thread after HID thread about people who bought some damn crappy 9006 kit off ebay and just tossed them in their stock headlight housings and then think they are the shit cause of it regardless of the fact their light output went down, their nighttime eye fatigue went up, and people comming the other way can't see shit. props to someone finally doing it the right way.

i was looking for a decent set of ECE E46 projectors a few months ago cause i was gonna do an A6 retro into my stock jimmy headlight housings, but i don't have the funds to do it. i wanted those projectors with Hella Gen 4 ballasts and 4100K bulbs for the best light output. the other problem i would have would be the ridges on the inside of the headlight housing, gotta get those sanded down. this was a good thread to read, and definately a nice break from the rest of the HID threads on this site.

Actually the kit I got is not some crappy kit. I don't think I'm the shit because of it either. My light output went up, not down. I get blinded by BMWs that have HIDS..even though they're done the correct way. It still blinds me. I just deal with it. If I had the $$$ and time, and I knew how to do it the "correct" way, I would. Till then I'm gonna stick w/ what I've got. I like it.

whatever, i am not reffering to everyone. more color = less light, a lot of people like to confuse the two. if you have HID bulbs in non-HID designed housings you have a horrible light pattern with a bad cutoff, major hot and cold spots, and you are more than likely blinding oncomming traffic whether you realise it or not. this is, of course, when compared to a real HID setup as well. i have never once seen an HID bulb in a non-HID housing that wasn't complete garbage compared to a real HID setup. it may very well be possible, but i have yet to see it. does this mean that everyone will be unhappy with their "HID kits"? of course not. there will always be the person who puts some junk 8000K bulb into their 9006 housing and thinks it is the best lighting solution ever, whatever works. i am not saying you are like that, it just seems that a majority of people think that way because they are uneducated.

I'd like to but when I'm working a lot I barely have enough time to work on my truck. I'd be more then happy to help over the forum though.

Basically that cut-off line was the way it came. I added one washer thickness between the cut-off shield and the lense to give it a bit more color but other then that it was straight out of the box. It seemed like the more I messed with it, the more out of focus it became.

----------------------------------------
I got most of the items to build the wiring harnesses, just waiting on one package which should come tomorrow. Hopefully I can get them working by the end of the weekend.

there was a writeup i saw a long time ago about some guy and a civic i think that made his own halos. all he did was take flexible plastic tubing, cut little slits into one side. i am not sure if he even cut all the way through or if he just scratched the tubing. but then he put two LEDs into the tubing, one facing each direction, and they came out pretty well. i will go see if i can find a link.

i stand corrected, it wasn't flexible tubing...i guess it was a blind adjustment rod. here is a really good how-to though:

Re: Project projector... (HID)

just 2 in my album but they are not visibility ones. the only issue I am having is one light isnt super tight on the mounting bracket and when i hit bumps it seems to flutter and its annoying as hell, I need to check all the screws and what not. I just ordered PIAA Superwhites off of Ebay for now. I don't have the cash for the real projectors now. I need SS mirrors and a winter beater.

Re: Project projector... (HID)

Today I disabled the DRL and AHL. This is an easy process and can be found in the stickys at the top of the electrical forum. This is important to do so that your headlights are not being turned off and on everytime you start the truck.

Got the other projector mounted in the other headlight and started making the new wiring harness. I'm still waiting on a couple connectors to finish it. After that I'll be able to temporarily mount everything and align the projectors.

Here is a wiring diagram of the new harness. This is for both the high-beams and the low-beams. The 9011 bulbs would've plugged into the stock wiring, but I decided to make a new harness while I was at it. From what I've been told, it'll boost the output of halogens due to the smaller gauge wire and shorter distance.

Re: Project projector... (HID)

Not a bad price. There was a site that does retrofit headlights and I asked about mine, it's around that same price range. Too rich for my blood though, but if I had the money, I'd do it. It looks so awesome!

Rordway1, dude those angel eyes look awesome. I wish I still had mine...those pictures make me miss them. I'll give you $10 for those.
