Re: overhead console wiring help!

C means the compass needs to be calibrated. Go drive in circles in a parking lot until it displays the direction.

Is the temp sensor hooked up?

Re: overhead console wiring help!

6 should be the zone you are in for the compass to read properly.
So after you drove around, none of the values change?

Re: overhead console wiring help!

You got about 3 choices. One, you don't have the data connection hooked up right. Two, you just haven't driven it enough to calibrate it. Three, the unit is junk. To calibrate the compass (assuming it works), you have to drive in some fairly small circles a couple of times (large parking lot works well). You may have it hooked up wrong. (I only had to add the data connection as the rest of the wires came straight from my existing 6 pin connector.) I just swapped my temp/compass for the trip computer this past weekend. I'm pretty sure the yellow wire was the data cable. I connected it to the purple wire on the OBD II connector next to the ebrake pedal. (I have an '04 Blazer. Dunno what you have.) If you have the short console, you might have the separate compass module. Look at the top of the display unit. If there is a 4 (or 5?) pin connector next to the 9 pin, you need the separate compass module. The compass won't work without it.

Re: overhead console wiring help!

Its a 98 sonoma.. I have the purple wire from the console going to the obd 2. It has the separate 4 pin and I connected it to the console.. What's the module? Isn't it built into the bracket?

Re: overhead console wiring help!

What did your console come out of? Both of my short ones came out of '00 Bravadas. The compass module I was referring to should have been attached to an extension on the right side of the bracket that holds the short console in place. (The bracket goes under the headliner.) If I have a chance tomorrow, I'll drop my console and see what color wire I have going to the OBD II port. I'm 99% sure it's yellow, but I've been wrong before. It also looks like there is more than one way these were wired up depending (I assume) on the year. Both of my short console/trip computers (again both from '00 Bravadas with sunroofs) are wired the same, but I've seen more than one wiring diagram posted here. It's still possible you have some wires wrong, but I'm not much of a wiring expert. If you know what year/model truck your console came out of, I'd find the wiring diagrams for that just to make sure you have everything in the right places. I don't know if this will help, but the trip computer I have that came out of the Bravada has a sticker on it with this: VA433120U3D. The trip computer I have that came from an unknown source (but without the extra plug for the compass) has a sticker with this: V9123814QFH. I'm going to assume those are part numbers as they also have a bar code on the same sticker and the only other numbers on the displays are patent numbers. Dunno if this info helps or not but if you have the same part number on yours that I have on the one out of the Bravada, it might help if you try to track down a wiring diagram.

Re: overhead console wiring help!

Like I said, I can't help you much on the wiring as I just repinned the 9 pin connector exactly as I had my original 6 pin then simply added the data wire. The 9 pin connector (with the wiring down to the C 209 connector under the dash) still had the original wiring in it too but I took out the wiring (except again for the data wire). Everything works but I don't know what everything (except the data wire) goes to as it's still embedded deep in the dash. Nothing on my setup is tied in to the radio unless it was done from the factory (which I doubt...I'm pretty sure it all goes to C 209). The trucks (except the Crew Cab) don't have the C 209 plug under the dash so you're out of luck with that. When I had the compass module unplugged, my compass wouldn't read anything either. It's still possible that you have a bad unit. BTW, the first 6 pins are all together then pin 7 is empty. Pin 8 is the RAP power (leaves the power on til you open the door which wasn't needed since I already had another one of those wired up for the temp/compass unit OEM. Pin 9 is the data cable that goes to the OBD II. Maybe your wiring is just a different color than mine but in the same locations?

Re: overhead console wiring help!

Mine is pretty much wired like yours. Here are the differences between ours, not saying its gonna make it work but just letting you know.

Temp Sensor Ground: I drilled a hole in the core support and made a fresh ground for it with a screw and a ring terminal on the end of the ground wire.

Dome light/homelink wiring: I tapped all of my wires into the rearview map lights and dome light including ground and 12v constant.

Class 2 Data on the console: I tapped into pin A1 on the Second BCM plug(Light Blue Plug, Yellow Wire at the first spot)

I also had to tap into the VSS on the BCM because my '03 Does not have a VSS wire, but I dont think that would be a problem for yours.

Also, I think when mine wanted to calibrate, it said Cal on the display not C.

Maybe check the data link wire or try the BCM for the source, but I cannot remember 100% cause I did it last summer.

Hope it gets working for you!

This is all assuming that the console is a 98+ as well though.

Re: overhead console wiring help!

i dont have the homelink or domelights hooked up right now.. and no blue wire for the class 2 mines purple see in the diagram? only thing i can think of is my temp sensor but all the other stuff should work if the temp sensor wasnt grounded right...

Re: overhead console wiring help!

The class 2 I am talking about is a yellow wire on the second plug on the BCM that has light blue conector. Im not sure about the temp sensor though.

I think it means he's double checking your wiring diagrams as he's applying bedliner to his truck.

purple -- data 2 under dash at the bcm
Ok,
Your diagram says that you attached the purple wire to the class II serial data wire on the ALDL, and that the yellow wire goes to the radio.

Those two wires are the only ones backwards according to my diagrams.
I connected my yellow wire to the class II serial data wire on the diagnostic connector, and the purple/white wire to the radio harness for the LED dimming signal.

Heres a copy of my diagrams pulled from AllData:

Pin -7 - dk grn- RAP fuse supply voltage
Pin -8 - blk/wht- Ground
Pin -9 - dk grn/wht- VSS
Pin -10 - lt grn/blk- Outside air temp sensor signal
Pin -11 - gry- Instrument panel lamp fuse supply voltage
Pin -12 - ppl/wht- LED dimming signal
Pin -13- not used
Pin -14- orn- Batt. positive voltage
Pin -15- yel- Trip computer/Nav class 2 serial data

So I say switch your yellow and purple/white wires and see what happens.

-This is assuming you have the short 98+ console and wiring-

Re: overhead console wiring help!

When I turn my dimming switch down the console lights dim so I don't think that's wrong.. And if I take the yellow off it doesn't power up that's 12v...

Depending on which one you have, I might have an extra for you. This is only the electronic parts not the whole console. Yes, they are exchangeable.

Re: overhead console wiring help!

ok, just to add more confusion here, i have a 1994 S 10 Blazer, digital dash,4.3W, 4x4. i bought a overhead compass off ebay, so im not sure what year its from, and it does have the same wires as lwrd93's has, the colors are Yellow, Black/white, Dark Green, Light Green/Black , Gray, Brown, Empty Space, Orange, Purple. Ive seen tons of instructions and diagrams but until we figure out what year and where these wires are supposed to lead it's all just guessing or knowledge from someone who has already researched or installed one of these 9 pin 8 wire harnesses into an odd year S10, if anyone has installed these into a Square Body 1994 S10 w ith OBD1, let me know I dont think mines has the trip computer anyhow, so thats not a problem, if i can get the compass and temp. i'll be happy, im just afraid to guess and blow out my digital dash, thanks Dean

What are the buttons on the console...if it says on/off will only be temp and compass, if it says "mode" it will be trip, compass and temp
