OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

There are lots of overhead console threads on this forum and other boards but there'S still a lot of confusion as to which vehicles have what and which consoles have what features.

IF YOU HAVE A WORKING OVERHEAD CONSOLE, PLEASE PARTICIPATE IN THIS THREAD & CONTRIBUTE! PLEASE STATE THE FOLLOWING INFO:

1. YOUR VEHICLE YEAR/MODEL/TYPE (FOR EXAMPLE, 2002 BLAZER 2-DR, 1998 SONOMA EXT. CAB, 1997 BRAVADA, ETC.)
2. IF IT CAME ORIGINALLY WITH THE OVERHEAD CONSOLE
2B. IF IT DIDN'T COME WITH THE OVERHEAD CONSOLE, EXACTLY WHAT YOU TOOK IT OUT OF, OR IT'S CLAIMED TO BE FROM, TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE.
3. SHORT CONSOLE OR LONG CONSOLE. IF SHORT CONSOLE, PUSH LIGHTS OR BUTTON OPERATED
4. ON/OFF BUTTON OR MODE BUTTON
5. HOMELINK OR ONSTAR IF PRESENT ON THE CONSOLE
6. ANY OTHER FEATURES
7. IF YOU INSTALLED IT YOURSELF, WAS THERE ALREADY A HARNESS IN THE VEHICLE, DID YOU GET THE HARNESS WITH THE CONSOLE, OR DID YOU MAKE YOUR OWN HARNESS/WIRING OR BUY ONE SOMEWHERE?
8. DOES EVERYTHING WORK?

IF YOU PURCHASED OR ACQUIRED AN OVERHEAD CONSOLE FOR YOUR VEHICLE NOT ALREADY EQUIPPED WITH ONE:

1. WHAT YOU WANT TO PUT IT IN
2B: EXACTLY WHAT YOU TOOK IT OUT OF, OR CLAIMED TO BE FROM, TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE. FOR EBAY PURCHASES, JUST STATE EBAY AND WHAT THE AUCTION CLAIMED IT WAS FOR/FROM.
3. SHORT CONSOLE OR LONG CONSOLE, or 1st Gen style.
3B. IF SHORT CONSOLE, PUSH LIGHTS (FIXED) OR BUTTON OPERATED (AIMABLE SPOTLIGHTS)
3C: IF SHORT CONSOLE, DID IT COME WITH A BRACKET WITH AN EXTENSION ARM
4. ON/OFF BUTTON OR MODE BUTTON
5. HOMELINK OR ONSTAR IF PRESENT ON THE CONSOLE
6. ANY OTHER FEATURES
7. IF YOU ARE INSTALLING IT YOURSELF, WAS THERE ALREADY A HARNESS IN THE VEHICLE, DID YOU GET THE HARNESS WITH THE CONSOLE, OR DID YOU MAKE YOUR OWN HARNESS/WIRING OR BUY ONE SOMEWHERE?
8. DOES EVERYTHING WORK?

Overhead consoles (OHC's from here on out) were available since the early 1990's I believe. There are 3 basic size versions.

The 1st Gen vehicles the OHC had a white dome lens at the end of the console. It had adjustable spotlights (2) and 3 compartment doors. It was available both with & without digital display I believe.

The 2nd Gen vehicles had both short & long versions of OHC. And among both, they were available in many different configurations--digital display with ON/OFF button had Compass & Temp, and with MODE button it also had trip computer functions. Also, some had Homelink buttons and some had OnStar microphones.

The short consoles usually had push-in-to-turn-on lights, though at least 1 or 2 years had a short console with adjustable/aimable dome spotlights with individual power buttons.

The long consoles were similar to the first Gen OHC's but had a crystal/difuser style dome lens and was even longer, with 2 more aimable spotlights at the rear. The long OHC's had individual power buttons for each aimable dome spotlight (4.)

We won't get into questions yet on wiring differences but just want to gather as much info as to what features came with what type and year model. Short consoles were often used mostly with vehicles with factory sunroofs, though I can't say exclusively or not. That's why this thread exists--to find out what is from what. So your participation can truly help.

CURRENTLY, I don't have any OHC's installed in anything, but I have both a first Gen type and a short console, plus a long that I paid for and am waiting to receive from a forum member. So:

OHC #1
2B. supposedly 93 S-Blazer
3. 1st gen type
4. ON/OFF
6. Tan/Saddle trim

OHC #2
1. May install in 02 ZR2 ExtCab
2B. 2000 Bravada... (listed to fit 98-05 Bravada)
3. Short
3B. push lights
3C. with bracket/arm
4. MODE
5. Homelink
6. charcoal/graphite trim

Please post accordingly. Any participation will be appreciated by many here. Thanks.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

2001 S10 Xtreme - 2.2L
Added overhead console
Short
With Homelink
on/off
Installed myself with harness and mounting bracket that I tore out of a blazer at a junk yard.
Can't get homelink to work, it just resets all garage door openers within a 100ft radius when a button is pressed lol
I also did not hook up the compass because I didn't care for it but can be hooked up to the VSS to work correctly, I just use temp.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

Thanks for the posts.

Hucko, this is from the ZR2USA forum for the Homelink, maybe it will help.

Homelink:

First time programming

1. For first time training, press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons, releasing only when the HomeLink indicator light begins to flash after 20 seconds. (Do not perform this step when training the additional HomeLink buttons.)

2. Position the hand-held transmitter 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink surface (located on your overhead), keeping the HomeLink indicator light in view.

3. Using both hands, simultaneously press and hold both the desired HomeLink button and hand held transmitter button. DO NOT release until the HomeLink indicator light flashes slowly and then rapidly. When the indicator light flashes rapidly, both buttons may be released. (The rapid flashing indicates successful training.)

Note: Some garage door openers may require you to replace step 3 with the “cycling” procedure noted in the “View Canadian Instructions” section.

4. Press and hold the trained HomeLink button and observe the indicator light.

* If the indicator light is solid/continuous, training is complete and your device should activate when the HomeLink button is pressed and released.
* If the indicator light blinks rapidly for 2 seconds and then turns a solid/continuous light, proceed with the following training instructions for a rolling code device. A second person may make the following steps quicker and easier. Please use a ladder or other device. Do not stand on your vehicle to perform the next steps.

5. At the garage door opener receiver (motorhead unit) in the garage, locate the “learn” or “smart” button (usually near where the hanging antenna wire is attached to the unit). If there is difficulty locating the training button, reference the garage door opener’s manual or contact us.

6. Press and release the “learn” or “smart” button (the name and color of the button may vary by manufacturer). NOTE: Once the button is pressed, there are 30 seconds in which to initiate the next step.

7. Return to the vehicle and firmly press and hold the trained HomeLink button for two seconds and release. Repeat the “press/hold/release” sequence up to 3 times to complete the training process.

If you indeed mean 1994 S-Blazer & S-Jimmy, those are 1st gen body styles, so should be the same all the way back to 1982 & fit a 1989 no problem. Unless you mean 1995 S-Blazer & Jimmy--1994 the S-trucks changed body styles to the 2nd Gen, but the S-Blazer/Jimmy stayed the same 1st Gen body.

I think putting it in an S-Blazer/Jimmy may be even easier than an S-truck because the roof brace may already be there on a Blazer/Jimmy roof to mount the rear of the console. Pickup bodies you have to improvise for the rear mount, like a piece of wood between the headliner and roof.

As long as it's the ON/OFF & not the MODE version, you should have no problems.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

hi all well i have a similar question. not about an overhead console but rear view mirror. i have a rear view mirror that came out of a 94 (best of my knowledge) but im going to be putting in a 92 s10. the mirror i have now doesnt have any lights at all but the one im replacing does,, now the new mirror has 4 wires coming out, one solid black (ground im guessing) one solid white.. one solid orange,, one pink with black tracer. now all those wires goto a printed circuit board,, then to switches and bulbs from there. im sure one of the wires is from a constance power source ( dont know the color though) one from the door swith (unknown wire) and one to the dash switch (also unknown). i dont have any wiring ran yet but i cant seem to find a diagram for this to figure it out.. if any body could please HELPPPPPP MEEEEEEE i will buy you a beer!! =)

The pink with black is usually the ignition/accessory if I remember correctly, at least on all the older GM vehicles I've ever worked on; on the older cars, radio worked only with key in Acc or key forward. I'd assume the same way. My current truck is a 2002 with the maplite mirror and the dome light AND the maplites come on when you open the door or unlock the doors with the remote. Orange & white are the courtesy lights, they are the same circuit I think to the door jamb switches.

Just try running the pink/black wire to any similar pink/black stripe wire under the dash (radio, etc) or coming out the fuse box. I think it controls the mirror lamps from coming on with the doors closed and no key--if you leave the maplite mirrors switched on and you turn the vehicle off, it turns the maplites off so you don't run down your battery when your gone/not in the vehicle. I don't know if I described that correctly but I think you know what I'm talking about, right?

With no key in the ignition, the orange & white wires power the lamps when the doors open. The pink/black interrupts power if the lights are left manually switched on at the mirror and the key's not in the forward or Accessory position. I think that's a little more clear wording.

P.S. If you're handy with taking your headliner in/out, you can tap the white & orange wires into your domelight, run the black to ground, and just run 1 wire (pink/black stripe) down to another pink/black striped wire under the dash. If you're putting it in a '92, there should be a tap on the fuseblock by your feet that says ACC or ACCY, maybe the upper corner or upper part of the fuseblock, use a female wire connector I think & connect the pink/blk striped wire there.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting.

What do you mean:

4. Both ON/OFF BUTTON and MODE BUTTON

It should have an EN/MET (English/Metric) button and either a MODE button **OR** an ON/OFF button... I don't think it can have both. Does it have compass & temperature, or does it also have the trip computer with temp, compass, Instant MPG, AVG MPG, MPH, AVG MPH, Gallons, etc? Please clarify. Thanks.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

Thanks Nate.

As an added question to anyone with overhead consoles, do you people also have the mapllight rearview mirror and the lighted vanity mirrors on the sunvisors? both? just the rearview? just the lighted vanity visor mirrors?

If you get the overhead console, do you NOT get the maplight rearview mirror or yes? I've seen a bunch of OnStar mirrors and don't recall if they were lighted or not, I think not, and would assume those with the OnStar mirrors maybe would have had overhead consoles, though I've seen long consoles with the little OnStar microphone on the side, maybe 2" long.

And finally, when you open a door on the truck, do all the lights come on on the overhead console, or just the frosted or crystal-lensed large dome light? (on the long consoles)

These Q's may help with the wiring harness questions. There may be a multitude of combinations, considering:

Short console
Long console
OnStar mic on long console
OnStar mic on short console
OnStar on rearview mirror
Maplight rearview mirror
Standard rearview mirror
Auto-dim rearview mirror (someone said you need the auto-dim side mirrors for this one to work & can't just add it?)
Lighted vanity visor mirrors
Sunroof switch on short console
Homelink on either short or long console

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

my mirror dont have lights on it or onstar, but it is the auto dimming rearview, so it has the power button for that and the light sensor and only my big dome light comes on when the doors are opened. the other four stay off, also the underdash lights come on when a door is opened and i dont have auto dimming side mirrors, i didnt know they had them, the sides are power/heated

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

ok quick update on my rear-view mirror. i installed the mirror today everything works fine!! the wire's go like this,,,, black-ground; orange- constance 12 volts; white- ground from door jam switch; pink/blk trace- switched 12 volt,,, its pretty cool how the logic circuit works on this.. you give it 12 volts (orange) at all times to power everything up,, then when provided with a ground from door jam (white)= lights on,, now turn the ign switch on and it sends 12 volts through pink/ blk and it tells the unit to let the mirrors own rocker switches turn on/off. it also removes a timer that tells the lights to stay on after the door is shut,, in that when the ign switch is off and door is opened lights are on and stay on 12 sec after the door is shut.. thanks bowtie maybe this will help somebody one day!!

Just helped me! I've been doing tons of work on my 1st gen but never even drove it before I tore into it. When I bought it the engine was blown. Over a year and a half later it's bagged, shaved, and has a SB V8 conversion. Now I'm just trying to get the wiring and everything inside back together.

In my many trips to the junk yard I've found TONS of stuff I never knew the 1st gens had. One being the overhead console. Another being the mirror you've been working with. I saw a few of them there and I'll pick one up next time I go.

Now here's my mirror question. Does that same board in the mirror turn the interior lights off after a few minutes if a door is left open? That would be a great addition seeing as I like to have my doors open at shows.

And here's my console question so I'm not too off topic. My 1st gen doesn't have cruise control any more and never had the digital dash. Any way to hook up the temp and compass option now that those are gone?

Thanks guys! Check out my project page and you'll see the truck I'm working on.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

the compass should work by simply putting power to it.

you need the temp sensor that mounts to the core support and from what i've been told, you need to hook up the vehicle speed sensor for the thermometer to work properly.

i added an alternate wiring diagram here:

http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f200/o...nstall-214399/

(last post)

i'll put up some of my info later

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

I got a full overhead from a 1st Gen Blazer 4door. My truck is a 2003 Reg Cab. I removed the bubble dome light from the rear portion and cut it just behind the gray (doors) trim, leaving about a 1/2". These are covered in headliner material on the outter trim and gray on the inner trim (doors). Since the 2nd gen headliner is more curved than the 1st gens, I used a rt angle air grinder/sander with sanding disc to form it. I removed the headliner and placed it flat. This so I could go back and forth with it easily to see progress in forming it. Sounds harder than it was. I disassembled the 2 sections (doors and trim base). Once happy with the form and fit, I removed the rest of the headliner material from the trim base and canded it a little. I then used a Adhesion Promoter, Primer and then Painted/Clear-Coted it in Indigo Blue Metallic. I used Dupli-Color. Plasti-Cote doesnt match in this color very well. After a few cotes of paint and about 4 cotes of clear I let it dry for a few days. I used this time to Dynamat Xtreme the roof. Made a big difference in interior temps on hot days, and reducing raindrop noise. I fabbed up a couple sections of thinboard to place above the headliner to give the overheads attachment screws something to 'bite' into. A trapezoid shaped 6x8 peice up front between the visors, and 1 4x8 peice near the back. I placed about 3 screws from the headliner side to keep them in place B4 the overhead was up. Then I screwed the overhead to it. Up front I have the single original screw used, and I made 3 of my own out back. I put the ones out back hidden inside the rear-most door. I got a Display with Temp, Compass and Trip Computer. Wired it up, placed the compass locator in the appropriate position, made super-white LED swivel map lights and I was done. Heres a link to the installed pic http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t...-Overhead1.jpg

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

Oh, one more thing. I forgot to add, I removed the ancient generic OEM dome light fixture at the rear and modified the bubble lens to go in. Its the one from the rear of this 1st gen 4dr console. In the pic you can see it a little.

I can't get the spot lights to work to save my life. It looks like the one in purple p.'s post. I have 4 wires coming off the harness. Orange(12v), Black(ground), white (switch line), and a tan looking wire.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

I have the following setup currently on my 2001 Chevrolet Blazer with the LT Trim. I have an OHC with just the temp and compass display. I would like to replace that display with one that displays mpg, remaining fuel, avg speed, etc... On ebay, I have bid on a long console that has those options. As far as I know on the long console, home link or on star is not present.

My biggest question is there any mods that I need do, i.e., install sensors, etc.. to make it work properly, or can I just swap it out and it will work.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

I just bought a OHC from a 95 Blazer, its the long one with just the temp and compass only. My Question is it has 4 wires that look like there for the dome and spot lights. They are pluged into a little connector labled a b on one side then c d on the other. The colors are orange, black, yellow and white. Then at the back of the compass/temp unit theres a female plug with 6 pins. Am I missing the wires that plug in there? I know I need to buy a temp sensor, will that have the plug to fit in to the back of the compass/temp unit? Here are some pic that should help explain what I'm talking about

no....the temp sensor will be a stand alone unit that will need it's own plug

you need the connector/harness that plugs into the display also

you could get it at a dealership but you would have to show them what you need unless you have vin of the blazer it came out of.....gm parts dept. always want a vin and it's hard to get them to do anything without one!

i actually don't deal with the chevy dealership because they suck....i use the gmc dealership across town(their parts guy actually cares that you get the right part the first time)

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

Mine is in a 2003 S10 reg cab which didnt come with the option. I had got a few shortys (sunroof style) from a few 2nd Gen Blazers/Jimmys. Bud decided if I was going to do it, I wanted the full size.
Since the full size one was going to needed to be cut to fit at the back, the 1st Gen looked like a better option. I got one from a 1994 Blazer Tahoe LT. I used a trip computer display from one of the 2nd Gen overheads I had. The displays are interchangable from them, as well as Luminas, Montanas and other GM SUVs. Just get the correct temp sensor as there are 2 differnet ones =)
I removed the headliner and placed it upsidedown on a work bench and proceeded to fit it to the contours. The 1st Gens are more straight and the 2nd Gens are curvier. The rear, I simply removed the section where the domelight is and curved it to the headliners contours.
I stripped off the tan material, smoothed the upper section (overhead comes apart as upper side trim and base, and the section with the doors) and painted it Indigo Blue to match my trucks exterior.
I placed a peice of thinboard in the front, above where the orig attachment screw goes to install the headliner and a peice of thinboard at the rear as well. I securely mounted the thinboards 1st. Then I screwed the overhead to them. In the front its the single original mounting screw. At the rear, since I removed the domelight section of the overhead, I had to make my own mounting screw area. I pulled the big door downward and placed 2 screws through the overheads plastic structure and into the thinboard. Worked out very securely and great. Reinstalled the door back there.
Wireing up the display was already done by me. B4 installation.
I also modified the 1st Gen OEM domelight cover to fit into the headliner of my truck. I hated the genero small square domelamp and liked the bubble-looking one this console had. It took a little inginuity and heat moulding of the tabs. But looks way better IMO.
Heres a pic of mine.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

Has anyone just plugged the harness back into the factory plug? I got a console the other day with the full harness from a 2000 blazer. The console has the MODE button. I put it in my 04 Blazer extreme which did but come with any type of overhead console. I just plugged it into the plug that ran up to my dome light which is also the plug that I disconnected from the 2000 Blazer and every thing worked fine. The plug is located on the drives side behind the fuse box, the harness runs up the pillor. This seems a little easier than running wires all over your truck, haha.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

Forgot to mention you do have to splice into the harness and run wires for the temp sensor.

Re: OVERHEAD CONSOLE Owners Please Post HERE!!!!!!!

It almost directly under the driverside dash speaker, to get to it you need to flip the dash down which is a pain. But you can see it if you take off the fuse box cover and take the screw out that hold the fuse box in and push it back. You may need to use a small mirrow to look back and see it but its a noticeable plug so you wont miss it.
