Overhead Console

Im not sure where to put this : Electrical/Lighting or Interior. But it involves electrical so here it goes.

I bought an over head console out of a Blazer. Im gonna put it in my 03 S10 Reg Cab. Im gonna have to cut it to make it fit. Ive taken it apart and Im wondering how to wire it up. Im gonna have to cut off everything from the dome light back on this thing. Its all the wires for the little spot lights are wired together, does anybody know how to serperate them? Also does anybody know what im gonna need to make the Compass/Thermometer work? PornoJoe (who i bought this from) said i needed the wiring and the temp sensor. Another thing, could I just wire it into the existing dome light or the lights on my rearview mirror?

If this doesnt belong here, then if a mod would move it that'd be great.

Thanks

Ian

Re: Overhead Console

ill get you started with this stuff and if you have questions ill be on later to answer them...but read these first.

if you have a truck...it will not plug straight in. you have to tap for wires to get it to work....most of them can be had behind the radio
check these out...i can answer about any ?? you have on OHC

Re: Overhead Console

Holy shit man. This stuff is confusing as hell. We are gonna do it at my high school. We will start tomorrow with the rewiring of the overhead console lights. Then we will get on with the installation. I think im gonna do the lights first and the compass thing later. What power source for those lights do I splice into?

Re: Overhead Console

get all the wire from the radio. its the easiest place. the red line is for the lights
you can get all the wires from the radio except one. the CLASS 2 SERIAL DATA wire can be tapped from the OBDII port. it will be the purple wire on it.
Radio Plugs from file

Connector C1 (top radio plug)

1 GRY 118 Left Front Speaker Output (-) (w/o Amp)
2 TAN 201 Left Front Speaker Output (+) (w/o Amp)
3 DK GRN 117 Right Front Speaker Output (-) (w/o Amp)
4 LT GRN 200 Right Front Speaker Output (+) (w/o Amp)
5 BLK 1050 Ground
6 PPL/WHT 1382 LED Dimming Signal
7 GRY 1220 Instrument Panel Lamp Fuse Supply Voltage - 2
8 -- -- Not Used (w/o Amp)
9 DK GRN 1301 RAP Fuse Supply Voltage
10 ORN 340 Battery Positive Voltage

Connector C2 (bottom radio plug)

11 -- -- Not Used
12 PNK 314 Radio On Signal (Envoy Only)
13 LT GRN 1011 Remote Radio Control Signal (Envoy Only)
14 -- -- Not Used (Pick-up)
14 DK BLU 1796 Steering Wheel Controls Signal (Utility)
15 DK GRN 835 Entertainment and Comfort (Envoy Only)
16 DK GRN 389 Vehicle Speed Signal
17 LT BLU 115 Speaker Return - Right Rear (w/o Amp)
18 DK BLU 46 Right Rear Speaker Output (+) (w/o Amp)
19 YEL 116 (w/o Amp)
20 BRN 199 Left Rear Speaker Output (+) (w/o Amp)

and download and print the last file i posted above and extend your wires and label them. then tap into the radio wires. its super easy to do. just match the description and the colors and you should be fine. the temp wire you will have to run to the front of the grille.

the hardest thing for me was removing the visors and those little clips. on those you take the screw all the way out then put it back in like 2-3 turns....then push up on the screw while you pull down on the clip.

Re: Overhead Console

Ok gotcha. I hope my shop teacher is willing to help this time... Thanks Raven. I'll try to post some pics of what (if) we got done. So I gotta take the front dash piece out and the head unit out correct?

Re: Overhead Console

yes....its just a couple of screws.
the easiest way i did it was to print off the file i posted. then extend the wires on the console and label them. then take the papers you printed off and match up the wires accordingly. you can cut and solder or use those wire tap things.

but remember these things.....

Electronic Control Unit Output - 12 Volt - Inadvertant Load Control = the trigger that turns your lights on when you open your doors, ect. to get this tap the white wire on the light in the driver foot well.

Class 2 Serial Data = MPG data wire. to get this you need to tap the purple wire on the OBDII port.

Outside Air Temperature Sensor Signal = Air temp. you have to run this wire out of the cab and to behind the grille. then you attach it to the air temp sensor.

all these things are in the doc i posted. if you follow what i posted and follow the wiring in the doc you will have no problems.

to mount it. after you remove the visors, a-pillars, and 3rd door latch cover. very carefully pull down the headliner a little bit. you will see a hole about center window, in the roof metal. now that hole is bigger than the screw needed so you need to improvise a solution. i used one of those flat things that is threaded an pinched it on there a put the screw in. that's where the screw for holding the front of the console goes. then you measure a bunch of times and get the console centered and cut enough to get it to clip to the bracket. the bracket and screw will have plenty of force to hold it up. the compass on the bracket will plug into the console. then the console snaps into the bracket and put the screw in. then wire and your all set.

Re: Overhead Console

Will do. I gotta clean that thing up. The dremel melted the plastic more than it actually cut it. I did a test fit and i need to get the head liner down. It doesnt look like itll fit at this point.

Yes! That is exactly it! Except that mine has four of the spot lights. But yes! Maybe i can cut the rear of mine off and mold it so that its rounded like yours. Oh and i also have the compass thing. I doubt ill ever install that but we shall see. Nice build though. I had to read everything. lol Ill post pics up tonite. I got about half an hour until i get home.

Re: Overhead Console

Just installed the long console in my 2Dr xTreme Blazer. Learned a really cool trick. The two clips that go into the roof brace for the rear mount are pretty much impossible to buy.

BUT... You can go to Lowes or any good hardware store and buy a well nut for a 6mm cap screw that is round, but the same diameter as the short side of the rectangular hole the clip is supposed to go in. Drill out the mounting holes in the console just enough to allow the 6mm screw to fit through. It isn't much, just a bit. Then feed the 6mm screw through the hole in the console and screw the well nut down on the other side with the flange against the console. Just finger tight, not enough to swell the rubber bushing.

Then just line up the console, push it up against the headliner, and tighten the capscrews. This will cause the well nuts to swell and lock into the holes in the roof panel. These suckers were designed to hold the roof rack on first generation S10 Blazers and will hold that console to the roof like a monster. And since the bushing is rubber, no squeaks or rattles. Total cost for the two well nuts and two 6mm capscrews less than $3.

And it is so easy because you don't have to try and hold up the console while threading the screw into a blind snap nut.
