Mannnnn!

Ok so I was changing my fuel pump out and got the whole thing put together and turned the ignition switch on to pressurize the system. Did it a couple times and when I got about 58 psi I looked back at the tank to see if any fuel was leaking. No leak BUT man I said shit there is smoke coming from inside the fuel tank. I pulled it all back out and to see what the hell had happened. The stupid sending unit had burned up. I mean it was burnt to where I barely touched it and the plastic housing had broke off. The new harness had burned up and it was about 150 degrees. Seriously. So now I get to go buy a new sending unit tomorrow. But atleast the pump works and I got my truck running. Has anyone ever had that happen to them. I sure it has, But I've never seen one burn up like that before. It was like doubeling up the voltage to your house. Burning shit up.

Re: Mannnnn!

Somewhere, somehow.... sounds like you got the power to the pump tied onto the sender wire! Dumped +12 straight through the resistor that is/was your sender. Presto, really good heater.

Lucky that all you got was smoke... could have been MUCH worse...

Re: Mannnnn!

Thats what I thought, so I went back and double checked the entire circuit. You can't hook the two wire plug to the pump harness backwards, and unless you cut the plug and clips off the intank harness you can not hook that up wrong either. So I don't know what happened. Everything tests out normal now. Just freaky.

Re: Mannnnn!

Oh yeah, totally - I wasn't saying you hooked it up backwards (not to mention, the pump wouldn't have run if you had!).

But... the wires could have crossed over somewhere along the track and done it in. Could be pinched together, etc etc.
