ignition switch

ok, i found a truck sitting in a guys yard for about 6 months and i finally decide to stop and ask him about selling it yesterday. right now it only has the cab and doors on the truck. It was in a wreck, so he took the bed and frontend off and uses it to play in the woods.

anyways,he bought the truck with no title so we dunno what year it is and he lost the keys to it a few months ago. So, can i just get a switch for any year ZR2 and it work? there shouldnt be any differences between the years should they?

Re: ignition switch

there has got to be a better candidate to buy...its been in a wreck who knows whats wrong (bent frame, etc)
he uses it to play in the woods so its prolly been dogged to hell so it could blow up at any time.
saying he bought it with no title can be an iffy thing (see if a vin number is still on the cab, if not run away far)
not sure how the hell you loose keys to a vehicle that doesnt leave your property and not bother with em for 6 months...

well what body style is it? 1st gen or 2nd gen?

either way there should be a door sticker and or glovebox codes that give the manufacture year. or if he saved the front end parts on the radiator core support or underside of the hood should be an emmisions sticker saying it complies with XXXX model year

it's a 2nd gen ZR2, he has the bed that came off the truck sitting under a tree. the front end was trashed in a wreck, all thats there is a core support for the radiator and it's one from a different truck due to the stock one being trashed. it has vin tag still, i cant get inside right yet to check the dash for codes (doors are locked and he has no keys). all i want it for is to play in the woods too, i dont want to rebuild it or nothin and he's only asking $500 for it. hell, i figure the bed is worth that probably since it doesnt have any dents or scratches.

i guess if i cant get the doors unlocked soon, ill bust a window so i can get inside and check the dash codes... maybe the doorjam would have the year too?

EDIT: just seen where you said it would have a door sticker

Re: ignition switch

They are very easy truck to break into, what year roughly would it be? 94-97? 98-03? The dash will tell you this information along with the vin. Post the vin. The doors are also pretty easy to open with a different key. I've found a few vehicles my key for a 95 blazer works on.

Re: ignition switch

Ok, well, you can use a slim jim, try another key, have a key made off of the vin. Use a coat hanger or oil dipstick to unlock the door. Or if you don't care about damaging it, break a window, pry under the door handle and you can access the lock rod. There are a lot of possibilities without damaging the truck.

Edit: To keep this on topic, you can use an ignition switch from any 98+, however if it has passlock, you might have to figure out the ohm resistance and manaully bypass it.
