how to: sound and light door switch

we've all been there, working on something inside the truck with the door open and the key in the ignition so we can listen to some tunes while we work. all the while an annoying pingggggggggggg sound rings out through the music unless you've really got it cranked. well that happened to me yet again tonight, and i decided to do something about it and i brought out the camera to help you, the loyal s10forum members, get rid of this headache producing sound. when i started i had two goals, keep the door activated light functional, and get rid of the noise. and this is how i did it.

...note, i have a 97 s10, I don't know if it works on first gens or 98^ second gens. this is how i did it, suggestions are welcome, this is my first ever how-to, hope it helps.

First i located the switch. there is one on each side of the truck but after i did the first one, i realized you didn't have to do both. so i did the drivers side. if you don't know what it looks like, its next to the fuse cover and appears to be a small stick poking out of the side of the dash.

next, i partially removed the dash bezel (it pops off but there are two screws in the top of the gauge cluster)

and i removed the bolts that hold the lower parts of the dash and the plastic under the steering column (careful not to break the plastic sticks that hold it on...)

you don't have to fully remove the lower part of the dash, you just need to be able to squeeze your hand in there to locate the wires and disconect them.

then i located the switch assembly

its hard to see and its a tight squeeze so i used a small flashlight.

you can either squeeze your hands and a flathead screwdriver in there and disconnect the wires like i did, or you can pull the assembly out and then disconnect it. i suggest the second option, much easier imo.

either way you need to remove the switch assembly. i used needle nose plyers to pull it out.

be carefull when removing the assembly as it is two main pieces that seperate.

the assembly looks like this when removed.

and the wires should be dangling somewhere inside unless you managed to keep them in the hole.

next pull the black half of the assembly off of the white part and take care not to lose the spring that is inside.

now examine the white half and you should find three narrow bars on the inside.

simply pull out the bar on the far left if the bars are on the bottom. ( again the needle nose were helpful.)

the bar you just removed should look like so...

and the white piece should now look like this..

now reinsert the spring into the white piece...

and make sure everything lines back up...

and snap the two pices together.

make sure the stick springs back into place after you push on it.

next, take those wires and feed them through the hole,

line up the switch and wires,

apply pressure until they snap together. it should look like this when assembled.

now push the switch through the hole..

and push until it snaps into place...

reassemble everything...

and enjoy having the freedom to open your doors, with nice silence, and fully functional lights. hope this is helpful.

Re: how to: sound and light door switch

comics 22, you may have removed the wrong side.

the 98+ are similar, i had to take the sensor out of my passenger side so i could mount my sirius box on the inside of the dash. i never took the sensor apart, but it looks and comes out just as easily

Re: how to: sound and light door switch

Just be aware if you install an alarm that if you go to the BCM for the door triggers (like some tech sheets say to) that they may not test and a doom light is what you will need to.
