Re: How to Broken Hazard Switch Repair

Any of you geniuses ever think to look in a junkyard for a replacement turn signal assembly? HAHAHAA

the whole assembly costs about 10-20 bucks and it's quite easy to replace.

Why go to all the trouble of disassembly for a 5 min fix...

Why fix one part and have THIS happen when you can replace the whole damned thing for the same price! Yeah theres a little bit more labor but you know what...nothing "easy" will ever last!

So replacing a possibly bad part with a part of unknown quality is a good thing... Without a little more info it's hard to make an accurate diagnosis.

Well the problem seemed to be remedied by just the hazard light switch itself, so I thought I'd replace that first before I tore into the steering wheel and all.
I got a good deal on brand new turn switch assembly, so I've already got that anyway and can sell the hazard light switch if I have to replace it.

Problem is the same, even after replacing it now, most of the time anyway. During the day though it seems to work just fine, obviously...

Is there a write-up or any good experience on how to swap out the whole assembly?
I may just take off some work tomorrow and replace it if I can find some quick, accurate steps to swapping it out.

Thanks!

What year truck do you have?? Thru '97 they had rocker style light switches. The contacts tend to corrode and when the switch gets hot, expansion causes the contacts to expand ( my theroy). I had the same problem with the dash lights and headlights after about 20-25 minutes. Try moving the light switch up and down gently. If iot is the switch, the lights will flicker on/off when you move it. Picked up a new switch and problem solved for $20.

Re: How to Broken Hazard Switch Repair

By the way, the basic rundown has been that I had a broken hazard switch sometime ago. I used electrical tape to hold it down until recently, which always did the trick.

Finally, it started being difficult and out of nowhere it wouldn't allow my brake lights, signals, etc to work when I turned my lights on.

I have replaced the hazard light switch, which seemed to work to begin with, or some of the time anyway, but now it has been keep the left turn signal light on the dash on solid (not blinking) and is again not allowing my rear lights to turn on at all with my lights turned on.

Is there anyway a ground or some sort of fuse could be the problem or is it more than likely the entire switch?

Fuses in the fuse box seem to all be just fine...

I have a '97. So you mean to press in and press out the light switch (parking light and actual light switch both, as there are two of course)?

Makes me wonder if this could be the problem as when I first replaced the hazard light switch it seemed to work just fine with my lights turned on...

You must be one of the geniuses you mentioned...Last time I checked...well I didn't have to because it seems pretty clear, the lights are controled by the light switch...not the turnsingnal lever. It could be a coincidence that the other light problems (dash, brake, running) started when he replaced the hazard switch.

No...rock them up and down just a little bit with the switch on. If it's bad the lights will flicker.

The dash lights will flicker that is?
Thanks a lot, I'll have to try this tomorrow. If that doesn't work looks like I will be trying to get that assembly in, as I don't see it being much of anything else...

Gotcha, thanks.
If that's not the case, don't you think it's looking like the turn switch assembly for sure?

I don't know much about the turn signal switch. I can't imagine that would cause all of the symptoms you have...now quit playing and go check the light switch...do it now...

Haha I wish. I have to get up to try and make it into at least some of work. I'll be on here at some point though if that isn't the cause. I really need to fix it before I head out of town later and have to drive at night...

I just can't imagine it being fine for so long with electrical tape on it and then all of the sudden stop letting my brake lights or anything work with my lights turned on. Just really strange how it does that all of the sudden.

Re: How to Broken Hazard Switch Repair

I will for sure! Thanks for the help. Hopefully I can figure it out. Just seems like I have read so much about fuses and switches and grounds going wrong that I don't know whether to end up tearing into this assembly deal or go looking for a needle in a haystack!

Nope, wiggling the switch up and down doesn't do anything. I did notice that if the parking lights button is pushed down, when you get to the spot on the other button right where it is in the middle of turning on and turning off you can hear the turn signal/flashing light sound.
Makes me wonder if some type of switch has gone bad or something is shorting out.

It was a stupid ground wire from in front of the driver's side tail light, from when the dealership took off my bed a while back when someone hit me. What a bunch of garbage...

Re: How to Broken Hazard Switch Repair

Go get the hazard switch replacement piece from a dealership, which often has to be ordered in, if nothing else but the red button is broken. If I remember right, it was pretty simple to remove the broken button and then slide the new piece down into place.

Re: How to Broken Hazard Switch Repair

This thread saved me a ton of money...I was rolling around for about a year with 3 plastic forks holding down the hazard swtich..lol..

Though, when my dad and I went to take out the old one..it was a hassle..I know some of yalls came out easy..mine didn't..and for the people who are having problems..what we did was..drill a hole into the center of the button...screwed in a screw..and jerked the hell out of it..worked..after that you may have to dig out the rest of the housing..slip new one in..no more headaches! lol

I still have an ENTIRE turn signal switch assembly right now. If anyone needs it, I would be willing to sell it for less than I paid for it. Still in the box.

Re: How to Broken Hazard Switch Repair

Alright guys, I'm going insane. I went out and bought the new hazard piece today from a dealer. Got home, couldn't get the old piece out, went to home depot and bought some thinner needle nose's. Got the thing out in a few pieces. Greased up the new part, go to put it in-Nope, not gonna fit. It's the part number that was specified and everything. What's the deal? I read it would fit a 1996 S10. Is there a different switch for that year???
Thanks for any info, I'm about to scream.

How does $30 sound? I think it was $50 or $60 when I bought it and it has never been completely unwrapped yet I don't believe.
