HID's and High Beams

Hi guys,

This may sound overly retarded, but what sense does it make to have HID low beams and standard halogen high beams? I researched a little bit but did not come up with much. From the standpoint of light output, don't HID's usually have a higher light output than a standard halogen? And if that's the case, why have high beams? Or are the high beams necessary to put light farther out in front of the vehicle, not necessarily more light?

Now i'm sure somebody is going to give me the smack down after this, so please, be gentle.

Re: HID's and High Beams

high beams cast light further than low beams. they also cast light higher than a low beam is allowed to. this is particularly useful for spotting that deer up on the bank on the side of the road above the level of your headlights.

when the halogen high beams are on with HID's as low beams, all 4 bulbs are lit so the HIDs don't have to be reignited when you switch back to low beams. if you really wanted amazing high beams, you'd install bi-xenon projectors which has a shield in place for the low beams, and moves the shield out of the way for high beams, thus using the HIDs for low and high beams.

another reason to not put hid in the high is if you use the flash to pass feature it may mess up them powering them up and down so fast

Thanks for the clarification man. That's what I had thought, I just wasn't 100% on it.

That was my main reasoning for going with the h4-2s instead of the H4 "bi-xenons". That, and it would at least have some light, albeit piss-poor, to get home with in the event of a relay or ballast failure.

Yeah I just have HID's in my stock headlights and when I pull the lever back you can still see the halogen bulb output. It'd definately be nice to put the HID's in both high and low beams but ^ that's the reason why I won't .
