HELP! electrical problem!

Ok, it started with my gas gauge going haywire when it feels like it about a week ago, which i figured to be a short in the system for the sending unit. Now my security light stays on and the seatbelt light will stay on even if your buckled up. When this happens the remote doesnt work to unlock/lock/alarm the truck. but then last night I unlocked it with the remote, and everything inside worked fine, but the remote wouldnt work again. then this morning, remote works once and thats it, and the interior problems started again. Anyone have any ideas and could help???????????

Re: Truck starts then shuts off

no remote start, but the remote to unlock the doors has not been working either since the security light came on, seatbelt light stays on even though it was on, and DRL/AHL were not working when the truck would run, also no interior dome lamps. IDK, I took the batt out to charge it and im gonna check it out when i get back home later. the stock stereo has been out for almost 3 years and bno probs up until now.

Click here for info on how to reset your VATS (vehicle anti-theft system). Check the pictures of the keys on page 8 to see if you have Passlock or Passlock 3, then refer to that section of the text for instructions on how to reset it. If you have more than one key note that you only have 10 sec. to insert the second key.

Re: Truck starts then shuts off

I meant to say Passkey III, not Passlock 3. I have a '98 Blazer and it is Passkey III. Passkey II systems have the visible chip on the side of the key.

the seperate threads were because i didnt seem to get any response to my first nor in this electrical section. thanks orangesonoma for the help.

Did you even bother to read the article that I posted? It is published by Standard Motor Products, one of the largest manufacturers of ignition products in the world. It has drawings of all of the different keys and thorough explanations of each system and how it works. And you have what? A list on the web from some unknown guy who installs alarms on cars? And you think that I am wrong? You're not just saying that I'm wrong, you're saying that Standard Motor Products doesn't know what it is talking about. I don't think so. You are wrong and i do have a Passkey III system.

You have to turn it on for 3 10 minute cycles, not 1.

Re: HELP! electrical problem!

saw it, but it did not do anything, i tried but the security light stayed on and would not go out, im getting the same issue as well. I dont understand why GM would use this retarded ass system.

Im printing wiring diagrams now to check that im getting power and ground where I need it to and from the BCM. I absolutely hate electrical work so this is going to drive me nuts!

MY security light on steady, whether the key is on or off and no matter what, it will not go off. im stuck on this and im ready to burn the freakin truck.

you are wrong
plain and simple..ask anybody that works for gm what passlock system 98+ s10's have they will all tell you that you have passlock 2

that may just be some jackasses website but it is 100% correct...
and i know that is corretc since i have installed more alarms with remote starts in 98+ s-series then i can even think about counting trust me i have been doing this since 94 and have worked on hundreds of thousands of cars...

passlock 3 has a pk3 stamped into the base of the key ... does your have that... and if you dont believe me check your site you linked..

These keys
are usually identified by the letters
PK3, or PK3+ stamped into the steel
body.

a copy and paste from your link...

oh and yes the picture is wrong the pic in the upper left is a vats only key...passlock 2 never had a chip in it.. passlock 2 systems use a resistance built into a switch in the ignition switch and all the key does is complete the curcuit...

that is because you are getting the wrong information

try the correct way
1. First, insert the ignition key and
turn the ignition switch to the
“On” position (Do not start the
engine). Leave the switch on for
11 minutes. The security light
may flash or be on steady during
this 11 minute period. Make sure
the light is no longer on or
flashing before proceeding to #2 .
2. Turn the ignition switch off for 30
seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the
“On” position (as in step #1) for
11 minutes again.
4. Turn the ignition switch off for
another 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switch to the
“On” position for 11 minutes a
third time.
6. Turn the ignition switch off for 30
seconds one final time.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the
“On” position one final time and
wait 30 seconds.
8. Attempt to start the engine.
If the engine starts and runs
normally, the relearn is
complete.

Re: HELP! electrical problem!

PASSKEY 3 AND
PASSKEY 3+
In this system, the vehicle theft
deterrent functions are provided by
the theft deterrent control module.
There is a transponder embedded in
the head of the key
that becomes
energized by the exciter coils in the
ignition lock cylinder when the
ignition switch is turned on.

from your link... would you like to see the key that starts my 98 blazer that is passlock 2 equipped

and surprise surprise there is no "chip" in the key...do you still think you are correct? or would you like to see the pics? according to your fancy ass website there should be a transponder built into the head of the key right??
well then why does it start
