Gauge clusters interchangable?

I have a '96 pickup that came without a tach in the gauge cluster, only the speedo and 4 smaller gauges.

If I were to find a cluster from a 2nd gen truck that had the tach, would it be a straightforward swap in/out, or are there other changes that would need to be made?

What model years would be interchangable - '94 - '97 only, or are the '98 and up trucks suitable as well?

How difficult would it be to change the odometer to match my actual mileage, since the chances of finding a donor cluster with the same mleage as my truck is about nothing.

Thanks! I'll add an external tach if needed, but built-in would be better.

Didn't they change the interior in 1998?

According to my book, 1994-1997 interchanges.

That what I thought, but I wasn't sure.

Re: Gauge clusters interchangable?

Only 95-97 will fit, 94 is slightly different due to it still utilizing the first gen non-airbag column.

Re: Gauge clusters interchangable?

Thanks.

So would the '95-'97 simply swap in, using the existing wiring? Can you change the odometer reading without destroying the mechanism?

The new cluster just plugs right in, you should already be wired for a tach. Couldn't tell ya about the odometer though, I was fortunate enough to find one for my 96 with only a couple thousand more miles on it than my truck had.
