Doing Hot Rod Air
Had to pick between EDC and Vintage Air/Hot Rod Air because of my money situation... and I decided to do Hot Rod Air right now... because it was 95 degrees today and I was sweating my balls off.
Vintage Air is all universal, but it has a good reputation... Hot Rod Air I've heard good things about, not as popular it seems... but they sell a bolt on kit and the guy was very easy to talk to. The Hot Rod air evap box is 4" smaller in length than Vintage Air, which, if it's going behind my dash... thats a plus. Scott @ Hot Rod said I could use my stock A/C compressor... but I have to take off the mounting plate and see if the (couldn't understand what he said) are the same depth or if one is deeper. He was referring to what the hoses connected to. Anyone have any idea, or do I really have to take apart the A/C compressor to look? Vintage Air is $535 for the evap kit, and we have to make our own brackets (easy) but the custom hoses I'm not looking forward to. Hot Rod Air is $648 without the compressor, $835 with it. But again, it's pretty much bolt on. Cliff notes: Behind the mounting plate of my '02 Blazer stock compressor, are the things the hoses go to the same depth or no? Re: Doing Hot Rod Air
Figured out what he meant... the two hard lines on top of the A/C compressor, he wanted to know if one was higher than the other (which it was).
$39 for the mounting plate made for the truck $650 for the kit without the Sanden Looks like I'm going to have A/C again, woo Then I'll be able to raise the trailer fenders a little possibly for more clearance, lay harder on 20s in the front, and be cool. One step closer to the SFBD! |

Re: Doing Hot Rod Air
Be sure to post some pictures of the installation.
I don't think I've seen anyone show some pics from it's installation and I'm sure it would help out quite a few people. |

Re: Doing Hot Rod Air
So does the hot rod air eliminate the blower box on the firewall? Also, does it use the stock switches on the dash or do you need to run new ones?

Re: Doing Hot Rod Air
Yes, it will go in the dash... and the controls are additional. They can use your stock controls, but not sure what it'll cost, you have to mail it to them and wait 5-6 weeks (it's done by hand).

Re: Doing Hot Rod Air
Very interesting, I'm going to have to look into that system when I get back. It's probably easier to use their controls and delete the stock ones. Are you going to run an EDC as well?

Re: Doing Hot Rod Air
Yes I am. I am keeping my stock A/C compressor in it's location now, and buying the AirLift EDC kit in a few days. I believe the EDC kit provides brackets that go near where the alternator sits.
And I was wrong: He didn't want to know if one hardline was taller then the other. He wanted me to take the center bolt off of the back of the compressor and look inside and see if one of the lines (I think 8 and 10?) is deeper than the other. Does anyone know? |

Re: Doing Hot Rod Air
my dad has a vintage air set up on his 71 sb pu. a 350sb blue printed and extremly nice. about 450hp at the rear wheels. he loves the vintage air setup. total installation time was about 2 hours. and it blows super cold air even when he is under full boat acceleration. kinda pricey but worth it.
