changing mileage on cluster.
i have a cluster without a tach, so i bought one with a tach. the mileage will be off on it now, once i install it. I know the dealers can change it back, and was wondering if anyone has done this before, and what they would charge? i have yet to call them and ask. I have a 2000 s-10.

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
do it, and the vehical will not have any value. They will have to change the mileage on the title to unknown value and you will have no resale on the truck. You could have put 500k on it and switch it n it say theres only 100k on the truck. I would not recomend this.

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
i had to do this in my girls civic, i bought a cluster that had less miles. my cousin works at a dealership in brooklyn park and asked the title person there what to do. she told me keep the reciet from the one i bought and on their write the mileage of the one coming out and the one going in. and if you can keep the old one to show if you ever sell it. also if your truck is old enough when you sell, it might not matter. hope that helps

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
doesn't the truck have electonic gauges? mine reads digital, so it's controlled by the computer even if i unplug my gauges my computer still picks up the mileage

i talked to two dealerships and they said it was illegal to change the mileage on a cluster. but its not illegal to have a cluster in a car with the wrong mileage. WTF

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
i know its stored in the computer on silverado's with the electronic ...99+ style...a buddie had a lease and was close to going over and unpluged his dash it still registered it all...
and i thought it would be illegal to change a clusters milage regardless if its up or down...and unknown miles on a title sucks if you want a tach get a external there more accurate anyways and your dash will remain factory...better resale becasue you can just take the other tach out if you want. and i dont know about the dash your asking it is electronic or the roller style...i think if the newer ones are rolled back they have white dashes that drop between to the numbers to show fraud...i wouldn't mess with it |

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
go to the junk yard find a low mileage computer, and plug it into your truck, if you wanna be sneaky about it. but if you're playing by the rules then the computer controls the mileage not gauge cluster. I think that's the reason they went to electronic gauge cluster's so people don't just put a different cluster in and go, computers are alot more expensive.....

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
from what I know, it is not illegal to change the milage on a cluster, the part that is illegal is to misrepresent the milage of a car. so as long as it's accurate it should be fine, that's what I was told here in canada anyways

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
i had to change the cluster on my truck. i got a new one from the dealer because it was under warenty. but when the dealer does it they have to put a sticker in the door jamb that states the odometer has been replaced and at what mileage. it is one of those tamper proof stickers that leaves some kind of sign it has been tampered with if you try to remove it or mess with it. see if the dealer can just reset that gauge you got to zero and put the sticker in the door so you wont be breaking any laws or anything

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
well put....after a bunch of posts i think that explains it the best I went to the dealer...I asked them if i could bring them a cluster, or if they ordered a cluster, if they can match the mileage. They said no and they gave me all the legalities. They said if i bring a cluster, I can have them install it and install a sticker on the doorjamb. And if I order a cluster from their outsourced company, they all start at zero, and they won't match the mileage of the truck, so they'll put it on the doorjamb also. I still want to find someone that will match a cluster to my mileage. The state keeps mileage records with the yearly inspection. With 215K on it, I'm not trying to pick up any value at all. The truck is worth next to beans as far as resale value goes. I just want a seamless transition to a better cluster. |

Re: changing mileage on cluster.
If it's not digital, all you have to do is disassemble the cluster to get the mileage counter. I've done this about 4 times in my various Luminas' when I upgraded from the junk 85MPH speedo with idiot lights gauge cluster to the Euro 115mph cluster with tach and water/volt/oil guages. It's tedious, but not bad.
