Here is the link http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ enter only the part number 15174447 in the search box at the top left and that will bring up the part. No having to hassle with the "morons" at the parts dept at the dealerships. This is a legitimate GM OEM parts distributor.
Yeah, this is a great deal. $9.25 for the part plus $9.95 shipping totals $19.57.
Sounds real legit...

I'd rather deal with the "morons" directly and have the part the same day.

Actually gmpartsdirect is reputable, but they're shipping is too high

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

This sticky is AWSOME !!
I had an 87 s-10 a few years ago & then this year got a 95 & I just realized I needed the switch fixed. I remembered this forum from my older s-10 , searched , and Shazam , there was my fix.

Thanks a million , I have to get inspection soon & dont know if they would have checked this, but I'll fix it over the weekend now.

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

ok so i went to the dealer and asked for the part....they tryed to sell me the whole assembly...i told them they were wrong and they needed to recheck...they told me i was mistaken....i told them i'd get the part number and come back...and that instilled some sort of magic that made them believe me....so they checked again...and what do you know....they've got my part...so i told them to try listening to their customers because sometimes we know wtf we're talking about. he kind of got a glazed stupid look on his face and thats when i laid the money on the counter and walked away....$20 and three minutes...and my blinkers work but the brakes and hazards dont....i spent an hour trying to figure it out at 12:00 am and my friend walks out and says.."what about the fuse you took out earlier?"..thats when i felt stupid...put the fuse in and everything works great...plus the black switch is way better looking than the red one...lol. thanks a bunch...

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

The guys at the parts counter at the dealer cant always find it on the computer. Its not there fault either. I worked at a dealer for 9 months and I broke my switch. The guy at the parts counter was one of my friends uncle so I knew he could figure it out. He couldnt find it. I bought the whole assembly at cost (still $110).

WHEN YOU GO TO THE DEALER, GIVE THEM THE PART # 15174447

It will make it so much easier.

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

I have been driving mine around for about 4months with wood door shimms jaming it in place. I did have tape around the stearing colum but then i got out of school one day and found out the hazards were flashing and i looked dumb unlocking it and getting in. the tape melted and had to drive home with my finger holding it down, that was a long ride home on s-turns! but my wippers sometimes go crazy like they have a mind of there own and wont turn off tell there skipping off the glass from being to dry. I ordered the part on fri and hope it solves my wipper problem or all have to buy the whole switch! any one else have the same thing happen?

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Wow wish I would have read this sooner...when I broke mine off I shelled out around 300 bucks for the entire piece that goes inside of that with the new windshield wiper handle and everything... got frustrated and wound up breaking the plastic piece that covers the steering column and had to buy those too...

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

I installed this item, but I am having problems with it. Now when I turn my headlights/parking lights on, both blinker arrows on the dash light up solid until I turn the lights off... And now I don't have a dash backlight anymore...

Did anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,
Nick

I have replaced the computers(the one under the dash and the one in the kick panel) since they are installed they are used and not returnable. Can anyone tell me where the grounds are for to the dash items?
I have removed cleaned and reattached the harness grounds under the hood.
I still have the a/c heater issue where when it runs all the dash goes dead except the tach when the hvac switch is anywhere but off.
And now it doesn't run at all. Turn the key on and get no fuel pump kick in or spark when cranking.

anyone?

Ok long time in coming, but the turn signals, A/C - heater controls, Windshield wipers, hazards, and brake lights all work like they are supposed to.
I replaced <deep breath>
Hazard switch - didn't fix it
Multi function switch - didn't fix everything
Ignition switch - It runs again YAAAY!!!!
HVAC Controls - Didn't check the vacuum line
When i had replaced all the parts possible i dove into the harness under the dash. Turns out the prior owner had Knicked a couple wires cutting out his aftermarket stereo. Shrink wrap and shorts are gone! Too bad i threw away all the parts i replaced. I could probably sell em on here or flea bay to make a little bit of the money i wasted back!

Note to all

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Wow is all that i have to say to this. I work at the parts departpment at a gm dealership and i cant find this part in the parts catalogue at all. I looked it up for my 97 i even went as far as putting the in the vin and used the fin filtering. I put the part number into the locater, no dealerships around had the part in stock, I found the group number for the part and went into the parts catalogue where it says it should be nothing there, i put the part number into the search function where it tells me every application for the part number. It comes up as an invalid part number. I checked inventory at the warehouses there are 12 in the boston warehouse so i will have mine tomorrow morning at 8 am. Does anyone know the bulliten number or document id. i would like to print it out and hang it up for my own personal reference and so that the other parts guys here can see it. im sure it will save a lot of money for customers in the long run. Whoever found this part number Just saved me 40 dollars. I bought a multifunction switch from a junkyard for $50 my cost on this part is $10. Thanks so much. If your ever around massachusetts i would love to buy you a beer you saved me a lot of money and a few hours time.

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

I'm trying to follow the instructions in the original post to change the red hazard button/switch on a '96 Jimmy, but I don't see the images, only red x's.

Any idea how I can get a hold of an administrator? I sent an email to the "contact us" link, but it bounced back "mailbox quota exceeded."

Also, I'm trying to pull out the old broken button/switch, but it broke so far down, I'm having a had time getting a good enough hold on it to get it out. I grabbed onto the copper piece, but it pulled out leaving the rest of the plastic.

Thanks....any advice will be appreciated!!

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

I did this last week when my switch broke. Only problem is, that my horn did not work with the new switch. I could not pass Texas State inspection because of it. I ended up getting a whole multifunction turn signal switch from my work. Now everything works.

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Hey thanks for the how-to! You saved my battery and my sanity.

I thought I would post some picks of my temporary fix before I got the new switch.

Yup. That's black duct tape holding the switch down. I wasn't bad until it got unstuck going down the highway! Fortunately the Chevy dealer had the part in stock.

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Just did this last weekend, mine had been broken for a few months, and the old "stick a key in it" method finally failed, leaving me to drive from Yuma to SD with my hazzards on. (Finally realized i could pull the fuse about half way home). On the way, i called a dealer, and he wanted to sell me the whole assembly (with the turn signals) for over $500. Thanks for the post,

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

cool thanks for this thread!! My switch's broken, too. My dealer says $650 bucks for the whole assembly and "there's no other option"...

I gave him the description: GM Hazard switch repair Kit part # 15174447
and I had the next problem:
"$40 + shipping + 3 weeks"
Sometimes (mostly), I hate it not to be a resident of the US..

OK guys, I'd need your help, here's the deal:

If somebody could buy the part from his local dealer and stick it in a small Mail Lite bag or cushioned envelope and send it to me, he will get
$10 for the part
$10 for your gas
+shipping charge envelope

You'll get the cash by PayPal.

If anybody's interested to do me this favour, please email me

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

i just wanted to add my thanks for this thread.

i bought my 96 about 2 months ago. yesterday for the first time i went to use the flashers only to discover there was no switch.

there was a screw jammed into the hole... .so me, being the moron, i pulled thescrewo ut and turned the flashers on....... and then couldnt turn them off !!!

i was getting ready to completely dissasemble my steering column, and go buy a whole new multifunction lever...

and on a whim i checked the forum first, to see if there was a how-to on replacing the multifunction ....

and low and behold.. looky what i found instead. !!!!

sure enough, i popped the existing broken switch out in about 30 seconds, and put the new one back in about 30 seconds...

my local dealer wanted 16.95 i found it cheaper at gmpartsdirect.. 10.95.. but then add in shipping costs, and the 2-3 days of waiting....

the extra 6 bucks to get it done now was worth it.

just wanted to say thanks again.

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

rlith, where ever you are,THANK YOU! You are the fckin' best, man.I just did this repair and it was so easy even a semi-retard like me could do it.Took me an extra 17 seconds cuz mine was stuck not broken so I had to bust the switch out first.Part was about $20 from local Chevy dealer. The little grease packet was missing but they only had the one in stock so I took it.Advance sells little packets of dielectric grease for a buck so no biggie. Also a shout out to S-10 forum for making this (and so much more) possible.

98+ Trucks need to remove the bezel FIRST!

I went to the local junkyard and broke two good switches trying to get them out only to realize on 98+ trucks you need to remove the column bezel first. After the bezel was removed it popped right out in one piece. Seems the hole in the bezel is smaller on 98+ truck than on my 97. I was able to install the new one in my 97 without removing the bezel. You might want to add this to the first post because removing the bezel is not mentioned and it says the fix is good for all trucks 95 and up.
