Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Yes people, someone has finally done the Broken Hazard Switch repair because we were stupid when we pulled the dash bezel How-to!!!

This applies to all 95 -97... 98+ you need to remove the upper cover

Tools and Parts required:

Parts:
GM Hazard switch repair Kit part # 15174447

Tools:
Needle Nose Pliers

The hazard Switch kit will come with a small tube of dialectric grease. Smear this on the entire thing before installation.

First look at your old hazard hole. You should see it broken similar to this.

Reach in with your needle nose pliers and grasp the edge of the old switch
housing and pull upwards and remove.

You should now have the entire assembly out..

Now simply insert your new hazard switch in hole and push down firmly..

New Switch:

And wala! You're done... Your final repair should look like this.. (though less blurry unless you're not wearing glasses then it will look just like this!

Takes about 3 minutes. If you can't do this repair, you're a complete moron!

Enjoy!

That's pretty much what happenes... The proper way is to drop the steering column (remove the 2 15mm nuts under it) but it can be a pain... So with the pressure applied to the switch trying to remove the bezel without dropping the steering column, they tend to snap off...

As of now I stuck a door panel piece in the hole and it works fine..........i'll have to attempt to call ANOTHER dealer then....cool

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

It's a dealer item only... Usually between 12 and 15 bux... The part number is listed at the beggining of the how-to. You DO NOT need the whole multifunction switch as demonstrated in the pics

95 wasn't included in the recall, you'll need to spend the 12 bux...

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

You can order this part from GM Parts Direct, it's $9.25 plus shipping.

Here is the link http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ enter only the part number 15174447 in the search box at the top left and that will bring up the part. No having to hassle with the "morons" at the parts dept at the dealerships. This is a legitimate GM OEM parts distributor.

Hey, I resent that remark. I work at a GM Dealership in parts. The people in the parts Dept. ain't the morons, its the people that call up and don't know what they're lookin for.

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Is the switch black from gm parts direct....? cause the factory one is red?? that damn thing broke off and we ended up getting one from a 98+ s-10 at the junk yard and messed around with the connections to make it work the sprayer and wipers were like backwards....so we just replaced the whole hazard switch with the blinker stalk.. it was only $25 at the junk yard....100 at auto zone...but with this i think it would of saved us alotttttt of time.....

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Thanks alot man. I went to the dealer and they said there was no way to do it but to replace the whole thing and i told them i had a part number and everything...finally i gave up and went to anopther dealer and didnt even tell them what was wrong i just asked for the part. It took me a long while to get around to but god damn it was so easy to replace. Well not at first. Did you know that the horn goes off if you dont discconet the battery lol. I learned the hard way so my horn was blaring for about 15 mintues while i found a wrench. It went in really really easy...like it just slid in.

It took me a sec to get the old Switch and the stalk or whatever it is that holds the switch. I ended up taking the whole bezel out and taking the steering colum apart just to realize i was pulling it out at the wrong angle...

Thanks alot man

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Heh heh...I replaced the whole damn multi-function switch a couple of months ago. I found a new one on Ebay but it was still $100 . I did get a nice new clean turn/cruise lever out of it at least though. LOL! I'm just tryin to make myself feel better about the 100 bones, bear w/ me!

I'd say this is worthy of a sticky-icky!

The switch was $18 at my dealer, but my blazer is now fixed.

Thanks to this thread I avoided a $300-$400 dealer visit.

btw...if the horn does go off, which i dunno if it does or not cuz i havent pulled it yet

you could just remove the horn fuse ...then pop it back in when done, way easier then disconnecting batt...plus you dont gotta reprogram all your shit on like a HU

Actually you are a complete moron. It was never a recall, just a service bulliten. A service bulliten is the same as a recall except for the consumer pays for the part. I went thought this and tried to get the dealer to fix this. Where I work we break a few a month (I dont, but other employees do)

Wow, this is VERY helpful/ Definately worthy of a sticky. Thanks for the info!

Mine broke over a year ago and I wrapped it and the steering column in electrical tape to keep it in place..LOL....although the electrical tape comes undone or loosens with heat (like a hot day).

Forget the tire gauge, I jammed a screw in mine to stop it from leaving my turn signal on (now they don't work).

Thanks for the how-to, now I feel bad for buying a switch on evilBay for $100. Beats $350 from the stealer though, he was dying to sell me one, said he "had seven in stock". I wonder why?

Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

I've seen alot of people shove a little piece of cardboard infront of the switch and that seems to work, but now I'll have to tell my buddy about this. His broke a few months ago.

Alot of parts guys at dealerships get paid commission, so they'll try to sell you a $150 part over one that's just $15 anytime they think you don't know any better. They probably assume most people don't know that there's a cheaper fix than replacing the whole switch so they take advantage of it.....more money for them.

Thumbs up Re: Broken Hazard Switch Repair How-to!

Got mine today @ Domingo Vara Chevrolet in San Antonio for $18.50 + Tax. Just go to the parts counter and ask for part # 15174447, I didn't have any problem with them trying to sell me something I didn't need. Took me about 2 min. to install. Now the stearing wheel on the other hand is a mofo!
