Battery Help

I'm planning on adding a second battery sometime soon so that I don't have all my extra crap running off my stock battery. But, I don't know the first thing about this. If you guys could give me some tips or explain maybe what I am getting myself into that'd be great.

Some questions...

How do I connect it to the alternator?
I am supposed to connect it to the alternator right?
Should I find a gauge for the extra battery?
How would I go about connecting that to the batter?
Am I a noob? ... Wait I'll answer that one... Yes.
