87 stereo wiring in dash

I have an 87 s10 that i don't think ever came with a radio. I'm trying to wire one up in it but only have three wires i can find for a stereo. I have a grey, black and yellow. I tried to wire the black to ground on the radio, yellow to power then grey to power however i don't get anything on the face of the radio and it does not have constant power. can someone help me with what wires i'm missing or a wiring diagram for the truck.

There has never been an antenna on the truck (no hole for one on either fender) but there are two speakers withaftermarket wires comming out of the dash for them. I will post pics tonight or tomorrow.

thanks,

Re: 87 stereo wiring in dash

get a multimeter and check the wires. worse case you might have to run a wire for the power.

Grey is the dimmed output for backlighting.
Black is ground.
Yellow is switched power.
You need an orange wire (cig lighter is an easy spot to take it from there).

dimmed output for backlighting? is that the illumination for the cd player? If so, can i just tie it into the yellow wire to have the backlight of the screen come on when the cd player comes on? I will use the orange wire form the cigarette lighter.

The dimmed output is what feeds the backlighting on your dash. It varies depending on what your dimmer is set to (roughly 8-12V).

The yellow will usually go to a mating yellow on the deck (Pioneer, sony, etc - most use the same scheme), and is switched power.

Yes, use the orange off the lighter socket (constant/battery always power).

so this is the dimmer on the instrument cluster? can i tie it into the yellow wire or does it need its own connection?

Yes - the grey wire is the output from the dimmer.

If you have no need for it on your deck (most aftermarkets dont!) - then just ignore it, and use the yellow for a switched source.
