80 amp relay for e-fan

so i swapped to an lt1 dual electric fan setup and used this cheap torq-flow controller i found in my pops garage, part number 733647

i wired it up and it worked fine for a few days, but it stopped today. i messed with the fuse, which hasnt blown, and they came on, but stayed on constantly despite the ignition not on. its wierd they dont work but if you keep pulling the fuse and sticking it back in the fans will eventually come on and be stuck on

i suspect that the 30 amp relay that comes with the controller kit is to small. i found this one on ebay --> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...073689376&rd=1

will that plug right into a standard relay socket? my plan is to swap in this relay, put in a bigger fuse and increase the wire size, good plan or no

thanks for any help

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

also, i may end up just ditching the controller and wiring it to a manual in-cab switch via a relay. does anyone have a wiring diagram for that?

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

you do not need anything bigger than a 30amp relay. your controller may be bad.

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

why wouldnt i need bigger? these fans on start up draw over 30 amps, i guess perhaps the fuse would have blown though. i may try replacing the relay with a 40 amp and see what happens

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

I dug around in the parts books at my local parts store and found the part number for the fan relay for a Tarus and other things. It's Standard Motor Parts number RY116.

It plugs into the sockets that I had for the cheap ones. Pinout is the same.

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

If those relays use .250" wide tab connectors, I doubt if you're going to get them to pass more then 30 amps with out the connections melting. You'd need to use the wider .375" tabs or one of the relay modules like waytekwire.com part #46095

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

i cant believe i didnt realize this before, but my holley ecu has a built in e-fan control. its a programmable output that activates at certain water temperatures

so i'm gonna tear out that cheap controller anyways and use the holley output to activate a relay to power the fans. next question is how would the relay be wired? basically what terminals on the relay would i use and what for

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

On my 2001, the computer had a negative (ground) output for the eFan. In this case I hooked the ground up to the 85 terminal and a constant 12v to the 86 terminal. These terminals are parallel and opposite to each other. A +12v constant is then hooked up to terminal 87 and 30 goes to the fan (+). 87 and 30 are perpendicular to each other.

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

Also I used a 30 amp relay on my Taurus fan and it worked great. I'm using it on my Syclone fan now. I don't think the momentary large amp draw will hurt the relay.

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

i wired it up to a 40 amp relay today and did some testing and all is working well. i cant wire it to my ecu yet because i dont have GM harness pins

i wired it like this

85 - to holley ecu
87 - fused power from the battery
86 - jumped power from terminal 87
30 - to the e-fan positive wire

i tested by connecting the 85 to a ground and the fans came right on. now i just have to hook that terminal to the holley ecu

does anyone know where to get harness pins for a GM wiring harness?

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

If I remember correctly, I went to Radio shack / Circuit city and got some female pins for a serial plug connector. I pretty much looked on the shelf and found something that looked like it would work. They snapped in perfectly.

if by any chance you can get a part number that would be great

12020757 is the gm part number for them, 12020758 is the number for larger wire pins. last resort i'll go to a dealership to get them

Re: 80 amp relay for e-fan

Sorry, I don't have the package anymore. Did you check the price at the dealership? I know Napa here carries some weatherpack parts but I never checked on the pins for the computer. The pins for the 2-terminal connectors were like 25 cents a piece there.
