Exclamation 3rd brake light lens

Is it a common problem for the 3rd brake light lens to 'melt' where the bulbs are after a period of time? I have looked for a replacement lens, but the dealer says that I have to buy the whole assembly (over $100). I looked at several S10's while I was walking through parking lots at various times and noticed theirs are starting to do what mine has done

Re: 3rd brake light lens

You could find a nice clear or stock one for around $10. None of mine have ever melted, but one did discolor, but not to your extent.

Re: 3rd brake light lens

yes, it is a common problem. i believe the main problem is that several common bulb sizes fit the same size socket, so a lot of people put in the most common size bulb (i think it's a 194) which is brighter and pull more amperage, thus creating more heat. i can't swear to it, but i think it takes a # 63 bulb which fits the same plug. i tried looking it up on autozone.com but it wouldn't show a listing for the stop light bulbs or backup bulbs? and the one listed for high-mount stop lamp on partsamerica.com appears to actually be a dome light bulb

point is, get a new lense and make sure to install the correct size bult

Re: 3rd brake light lens

You would have to check out the wattages, but a 168 will plug in, thats what is in mine ?

As far as I know your choices are 194, 168, 921

Re: 3rd brake light lens

For a clear one...what kind of bulbs do you get? How do they light up in the day?

Re: 3rd brake light lens

i think you put to high of a wattage bulb in yours that is why it did it. just search ebay and you can find a lens for cheap. if you get a clear lens make sure you get a high quality red bulb that shines red and stays red and will not fade.

Re: 3rd brake light lens

That happened to mine, so I bought a clear lense, and replaced the bulbs with the ones listed in the autozone book (yes, they do look like dome light bulbs, sort of, but I found one red one...) the red faded, then the lense melted the same as the red one. The lens actually splits there, and water gets in. I figured it'd just blow the fuse while I was waiting to get a new one, but it actually stopped working for good... I checked ALL of my fuses (under the hood, too), just to be safe, and all of them were good. I checked the wiring, but found nothing. I ended up shaving it, then read on here somewhere that it was probably a relay under the hood! Oh, well, it looks better shaved! I put an LED strip in my back window (from autozone for like $20, it's actually an aftermarket, enclosed 3rd brakelight strip, not just a raw strip) to keep it legal, and wired it up to the aux 3rd brakelight for a truck cap. Hope this helps ya out!

Re: 3rd brake light lens

I would love to shave it and put in an LED system (saw someone on the Net that did that...could have been on this forum somewhere?) but I have no body tools, no talent, no shop, no money, etc to do it... guess I need to just find a replacement lens somewhere, but I can't find the stock red one on ebay.

If I had that kind of talent, I would have already repaired a lot of dents, dings, and scratches on my truck and painted it again....probably a different color than the dark hunter green... shows too much dirt and too many scratches.

Re: 3rd brake light lens

I just use the LED bulb, not much spread as the regular filament or brightness but still enough to be seen during day and good enough for evening, I got tired of it of burning through as well. I just got another one from another member.

Re: 3rd brake light lens

Yea, I've seen two different types of bulbs used in the housings, not sure if they were both stock or not, but I've seen a small and skinny style (about the same thickness as the base) and I've seen a fat style that are about twice as thick as the base. I'm willing to bet the fat style melt the housing quicker, although if you stop a lot and use sit with the brakes on, either bulb will melt it over time.

Re: 3rd brake light lens

My bulbs have never been replaced believe it or not and they melted through the same as OP's. I beleive its just something that happens to them.

Re: 3rd brake light lens

FYI bump:
bulb # 211-2 is what my 2000 S10 specs.
211-2 is 12 Volts at 12.4 Watts
577, 921 & 921LL are about 12v @ 17.9W (from the chart above)
Higher watts = higher heat
I think the 562 and 212-2 are rated at 10W, that's even cooler, but lower watts is less bright.

Hopefully this helps someone with the melting lens deal.
