What profession should I do

I know its all what I would like to do but I just wanna get your guys ideas.
They cut my hours back at work so I think this would be a great time to go back to school (college). I like working on cars and doing metal work or even possibly body work. My dad is an elevator mechanic but he seems to not really like it. He was telling me to apply to be a steamfitter apprentice but I failed the math part of the test. I just don't know what field of work I wanna go into, I know I just don't want an office job. Can you guys help me at all?

But sometimes, not always, but sometimes, when doing what you like is your job, you start to not like it anymore.

i used to love working on computers, but after 8 years of building, customizing, and quality checking them for a large corporation, i really don't even bother working on computers unless it's for friends and family who honestly don't have a clue about them. . .

Re: What profession should I do

lol..there some terrible responses so far...

Go to Community College, work hard & get good grades. Get your Associates first and see if any of the classes interest you. If not look into other fields of study a 4 year College offers, or even a tech school. Do research, find things that interest you and look into them, google any subject/profession/skill you have and try to find jobs that apply them.

Either way I would deffinitely get your Associates and possibly a Bachelor's degree, it'll help you get a job now and later in life.

That is exactly how I feel. I'm sure I would love to work outside during the 2-4 weeks that aren't too hot, cold, rainy, and windy.

The office life, as much as it's limited is pretty good. I have my own big ass desk, two monitors, a decent comp (for browsing S10forum), 2 big windows behind me, a free gym in my office building, a full fridge (stocked with normal stuff and hot sauce), a conference room where I eat lunch and watch ESPN/The Daily Show everyday, a Kurig coffee maker and fresh fruit. Overall I'd say it's not too bad.

same here, i worked the private sector and after 9 years im sick of the people you have to deal with, winny assed old ****s with their "it didn't cost me that much when little johnny fixed it", or the bitch queen from hell secretary that gives you 10 minutes to fix a crashed system because she has to get a document typed or the computer lives on the floor next to her feet and smells like foot fungus. friggin people suck

i wouldn't recommend computer repair and anything construction is in the dumpster right now with no relief insight

The military wasn't bad at all. I was in for 6 years, and I got out and got a job that I wouldn't have DREAMED of getting before! I travel for a living, and last year made over 80k. All because of the military... Seriously, it's not bad! lol

I joined the Army as an Infantrymen and then went to airborne and air assault and I loved it as well. Not everyone has done or seen shit I have so thats cool. Ive been shot and blown up too many ****ing times though...that shit isnt cool and neither is watching my platoon get smaller and smaller as our deployment went on. We lost a lot of good guys that were barely old enough to buy a pack of ciggs for a war i don't really support anymore. Im a soldier and Im always going to support the troops but the military as a whole can go fvck itself.

Re: What profession should I do

In my opinion, all these people telling you to join the military because they pay for your education and this and that are pretty ****ed up...right now the military is all about this war, everybody knows that. Do You honestly think they are going to train you and give you all this high speed shit just so you can go to school...no. The military isnt going to say you cant go to school or that they wont pay for it BUT they sure as hell arent going to give you the free time you need to do school. You'll be training all the time and doing shit to prepare to go overseas...and when You arent you arent going to want to do school...joining the military without a good idea of what you want in life could be good for you yeah....but it can also be the worst decision of your life so think about it and get all the facts. im not trying to steer you away from the military cuz im proud to have served and it did do some good for me...all im saying is think about it man cuz once you sign that contract the govt has you by the balls

Which is why I'm saying go Guard, and there's a program now that guarantees non-deployment for college students.

As long as he gets everything that he's told he will, WRITTEN IN HIS CONTRACT then thats kew...i know the military as a whole (including the guard) will do whatever it takes to get people in...including lying to recruits to get them to sign a one-sided binding contract that he has to fulfill...a contract that the military doesnt even abide by...

I'd consider looking into some form of healthcare. That will always be needed. I'm about to go back to school for Physical Therapy.

Look into a career that will exist in the future. Bodywork may be fun in all, but if the economy gets worse, there is less of a demand for bodywork on a car. However, certain things like medical aren't affected as much. I'm in College for Mechanical Engineering, right now I'm working in the oil industry. I enjoy what I do.

There's always going to be accidents and repairs, regardless of how the economy is doing.

Re: What profession should I do

Computers have been good to me. I got several different certifications, Linux Sys Admin, Net+, A+, Visual Basic, Access, Management Intensives and some specialized certs (Triton ATM Tech, Diebold ATM Tech, Tidel ATM Tech, NCR ATM Tech). I worked on ATM's for several years, went to work for an ATM/Credit Processor (RBS Worldpay) running the ATM Help Desk and am now in the operations dept. (Network Operations Control) working on multiple operating systems. I enjoy the work and will make well over $60k this year working 3 days on and 3 days off. I guess my suggestion would be to pick a field and just build on that experience. You are young enough to be able to start at the bottom and come up. I got into the ATM field when I was 21 and have been in it in some way or another since.
