Re: The New Firearm Thread
I went to the shooting range over the weekend and was trying out two handguns before I get mine. I tried my father-in-laws S&W 9mm and my sisters boyfriends Glock .45. I like both but the accuracy of the 9mm was a bit better. I think I am going to go with the 9mm just because the bullets are cheaper and if I am going to be shooting every few weeks I don't want to go broke on bullets.

Re: The New Firearm Thread
dont spend much time in ot and haven't seen this thread.
first i'll start with a question... I'm looking to get a 9mm handgun this summer. I'm not set on any specific model yet but i've been able to narrow my choices down a bit. I'm looking at the S&W 910/915 (or a 5906 if i can find one at a good price), the taurus pt-911, and the baretta 92 or taurus 92. if anyone has experience with these models please let me know how you like em! and please feel free to give me any other suggestions as to what else i should look into. i will be getting a carry permit but will rarely if ever carry it (on campus most of the time and will be a high school teacher after i graduate)... so i'm looking for a medium or large frame.. no subcompacts please! also i'm looking to spend around $500 and would prefer a metal frame over a poly frame. for some reason i just like the look of a metal frame! so throw some suggestions or opinions at me. also know that i plan to handle/shoot many models before i make a purchase. with that said... here is my small but fun arsenal: Savage 111 30-06, comfy thumbhole stock, 3-9x40 simmons that needs to be replaced with somethin a lil nicer: ![]() my Rem 597 .22lr, bsa 4x32, rock mount bi-pod, and a couple 30 rnd mags for a fun day at the range: ![]() and i know theyre not firearms but they sure are fun... a couple of my airsoft rifles... HFC spring XM-177 with custom "vietnam era" mag: ![]() and what was an HFC M-16A2 until i fell on it and broke it. decided to hack it up and have some fun. shortened the barrel and foregrip considerably, made a silencer out of 35mm film canisters, and threw on a red-dot for shits n giggles!: ![]() |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
I've never shot any of the ones you've suggested but have heard very good things about the Baretta 92. Can't say the same thing about Taurus. (note: I've never shot either) Another gun to consider is a CZ 75. Look into those. My cousin who is a collector tried to talk me into one of those for my first 9mm. Some good advice is to go to a range that lets you to rent out different pistols. Shoot a few, ones on your list and others you might not have considered, then along with some good online research you should be able to make the right choice.

Re: The New Firearm Thread
Well, for less than 500 you can get a NIB beretta 92 shipped to the FFL of your choice. If you are interested in that frame style do yourself a favor and buy the beretta, their quality is a big step above taurus. I myself have never been a big fan of the SW series of pistols. However I will say that the Metal framed versions had caught my attention at oe point and I would consider buying one if the price was right.

Re: The New Firearm Thread
thanks! i plan to shoot some pieces before i make a decision... but ranges that rent are hard to come by up here in north central pa. the only reason i mentioned the taurus 92 was cuz of the frame mounted safety. i like that feature the most about tauruses... but like you guys i have heard some bad shit bout taurus.
everyone keeps telling me bout the cz75.. i'll have to look closer at this model |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
Today, one of the greats has died.
Charlton Heston, Died at the fine old age of 84. He has done alot for the firearms industry, and the protection of the second ammendment. He is most noted for saying at the 129th NRA annual meeting on Saturday, May 20, 2000, "They can have my gun, when they pry it from my cold dead hands." He was a hero to a different generation than frequents this board. However I do feel his passing as bieng a sad moment in this lifetime. Μολών λαβέ |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
You have got to be ****ing joking right?
Charlton Heston (actor; born October 4, 1924, Evanston, Illinois) "I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be an actor," says Charlton Heston. For nearly half a century, Charlton Heston has not only been one of the most successful actors in the history of Hollywood, he has become the face most of us see whenever we encounter the names Moses, John the Baptist, Andrew Jackson, Michelangelo, El Cid, or Ben Hur. "I’ve played cardinals and cowboys," he says, "kings and quarterbacks, presidents and painters, cops and conmen." Add a couple of saints and sinners, Marc Antony, a warlord from the middle ages, and the manager of the greatest show on earth and you have a vibrant portrait of a consummate actor who has left an indelible impression on a monumental range of roles, covering 5,000 years of past and future history and a dozen different nationalities. Heston won the Academy Award for his portrayal of the fictional biblical-era hero Ben-Hur in William Wyler’s 1959 spectacular of the same name, and more than any other single person was responsible for the extraordinary popularity of the epic motion pictures that ruled international cinema during the 1950s and ‘60s. Anthony Mann, Heston’s director in El Cid, said, "Charlton is the ideal actor for the epic. Apart from his physical attributes, he can handle a horse, a sword, a chariot, a lance, anything, as though he were made for it. He’s incredible. Put a toga on him and he looks perfect." The whole world agrees, and he has been honored with awards from more than 20 countries. Heston spent his youth in a backwoods town in Michigan, a shy boy with few friends. He attended a one-room school with a pump in front. There were 13 pupils, three were his cousins, and he was the only student in his grade level. Eventually the family moved to the Chicago suburbs, where he played football in high school and got a taste of his future life in amateur theatricals. He liked pretending to be other people, and his acting led to a scholarship to Northwestern University. There he blossomed and soon headed for Broadway after serving in the Air Force during World War II. His debut was in Antony and Cleopatra in Katharine Cornell’s company. Starring roles in Leaf and Bough and Design for a Stained Glass Window followed. During the early ‘50s, when television regularly broadcast classic dramas, Heston appeared in Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew, Of Human Bondage, Jane Eyre, and Wuthering Heights, becoming one of the first Broadway actors to achieve success in the new medium. He first drew Hollywood’s attention after playing Antony in a 16mm version of Julius Caesar, and in 1952 Cecil B. De Mille signed him for The Greatest Show on Earth. The film won the Academy Award as Best Picture of the Year, and Charlton Heston was on his way to one of the most memorable film careers of the century. Four years later, director and star would reunite to create the definitive biblical epic, The Ten Commandments. The picture opened triumphantly in 1956 and put Heston at the forefront of leading men. Always modest about his success, Heston says "If you can’t make a career out of two De Mille pictures, well I guess you’ll never make it." Make it he did with 62 movies thus far that include Khartoum, Ruby Gentry, 55 Days at Peking, The Big Country, The Agony and the Ecstasy, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Touch of Evil, The War Lord, Major Dundee, Will Penny, Planet of the Apes, The Three Musketeers, The Omega Man, Diamond Head, Naked Jungle, Number One, Soylent Green, Earthquake, True Lies, Tombstone, Two-Minute Warning, and even Wayne’s World 2. He’s also found time to continue his stage career (as he says, "to renew my passport") starring in Robert Bolt’s A Man for All Seasons, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Macbeth with Vanessa Redgrave, Long Day’s Journey into Night with Deborah Kerr, Crucifer of Blood as Sherlock Homes, Detective Story, and in The Caine Mutiny Court Martial, a box office hit on both coasts as well as in London, where the Daily Express wrote of Heston’s "towering central performance of immense heroic stature." Off the stage and away from the screen, Heston has worked tirelessly on behalf of the arts. He has been the United States delegate to the Berlin Film Festival, visited American troops in Vietnam three times, served as President of the Board for the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles, and was a member of the National Council for the Arts. He served seven terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild, chairman of the American Film Institute, and was chosen by President Reagan to cochair the White House Task Force on the Arts and Humanities. In 1977, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored Heston with the Jean Hersholt Award for his humanitarian activities. As Frank Sinatra once observed: "That guy Heston has to watch it. If he’s not careful, he’ll get actors a good name." Most noteable person who shouted out "you can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hands. ![]() |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
Thursday my roommate and I drove down to one of the nearby gun shops and he picked up a new Ruger LCP. These suckers are so hard to find. Both of us have been looking for one since they came out last month. The shop said they got it in about noon. He bought it about 4pm. They said of the three they've gotten in so far this is the longest one has lasted in the case. My roommate paid MSRP. As hard as they are to find he said he was ok with paying it. They offered us some free range time so we took it out back to their indoor range and put a couple dozen FMJ's through it. It shoots great! I like the trigger pull a lot better than the Kel-Tec P-11 in my opinion. It's a long pull but fairly light. Plus it just feels better built. The first couple shoots we each took were off. Of course the gun had just been purchsed and we'd never shot it. You have to expect it to take some getting used to. He shot low to the left and I was low to the right. After getting used to it though we grouped near perfect, within about six to eight inches. Not bad for a pistol this size at 25 yards. I still can't wait to get one for myself. I've been wanting one since they were first talked about online but holding one and shooting one made me want it even more. He let me carry it around some and it really does dissappear in your pocket. You just forget its there. It's as light as a cell phone, not much bigger than my wallet, and it doesn't print much, even when bending down.

Re: The New Firearm Thread
I hate CZ's.
Internal slide rails are a bitch if you don't have woman hands. Sure you can compensate with practice, but it's my opinion you shouldn't have to. There's so little to grab onto with a CZ's slide that with sweaty hands under pressure they're practically impossible to charge. Ever notice how even race gun CZ's without optics still have slide chargers on the back of them? I don't like that they're made entirely of cast parts aside from the barrel. Even Jennings used a forged slide, and Taurus uses forged frames and slides even on their 22's. It may not be a big issues, but I'm just not up on paying the same for lesser materials. I'm not a big fan of slide mounted safeties, but I prefer them on double actions. When I shoot a gun with a frame mounted safety I go into 1911 mode and use it as a thumb rest. On a lot of guns that means a large possibility of accidentally decocking the gun out of single action. Oh, and I hate to say it, but all of the Taurus guns I've looked at since they went "tactical" seem to be leaps and bounds better than their older counterparts. Some of their guns are still junk by design though. I trust their 92 and 1911 lines enough that I'd probably buy one if I got a smoking deal on it, and their 24/7 is supposed to be pretty good too. |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
Well Im new to this gun room but not to many others. I have fired the CZ 75 in .40 and I really do not like the function of it, it just feels odd, like it could brake in your hand, and what 442typhoon said is true, its a b!tch to charge em with sweaty hands. Anyway I was going to show ya all my little collection but photobucket's seems down today, but I got a Mossberg 500 12ga with a 28" barrel and improved choke, a Remington 700 ADL 30-06, with a Leupold VX-II 50mm on it
thats my baby, and I also have a Ruger 10-22 with a BSA 3-9 42mm on it. |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
A .40 caliber is DESIGNED with a flat tip, which means is going to cause ALOT more trauma and impact damage than a 9mm!(unless you have a .40 JHP, THOSE suckers will reak even MORE damage.) I own a Glock23, and its the BEST gun you can own considering it's Price,Dependability,Power, and Mag Capacity,Lightweight and PORTABILITY! Plus you can customize the HELL out of these things....just like ANY other Glock. I've shot mine tons of times out at my buddies old construction site, and hes got vehicles out there and TONS of junk. Those .40 cals will go thru Heavy Duty Double Layered steel doors from construction trucks without a problem!!! I've tested the power and penetration abilites of the .40 cal, and 12 gauge ALOT. I know what it CAN go thru, and what it CANT.... The .40 cal is definately a badass round for CLOSE RANGE.......no doubt about it! Because i've SEEN what it can do. I would NOT wanna get hit with one of those ****ers...especially an expensive JHP.... Last edited by 1_slow_zr2 : 04-22-2008 at 09:11 PM. |

The ammo question of 40/9 has been hotly debated many times in many places. Its all personal preferance. I would say go for the 40sw. But thats MY preferance. They both can stop the threat infront of you.

I got bored on Saturday and picked up a Glock 26, well worth it. Shoots great. It ran 100% for 500 rounds. Try that with a 1911. I think I'm going to pickup an AR pistol with that Tax credit we're all getting:

Re: The New Firearm Thread
That's a nice collection of Glocks there GTNLWR.
Ever since I bought my Ruger LCP I've been considering getting rid of my G26 in favor of a G19. I just hate to sell my G26 that isn't even a year old for $350 just to turn around and buy a $500 G19. Used is used though. Oh well. I'll figure something out. |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
For IWB, I have always been kinda a cheapskate... I carry with one all the time. Its an soft unclemikes that only cost me $10. I like it because its super thin and When i have tried otherones I was dissapointed because of how much wider they made the carry package.
-NC10... Buy a 19 and keep the 26. Esp if you only think you could get only 350 for it. You could probably sell it private party for $425. You will be happy you did. A 26/27 is the perfect super concealled carry gun. Last edited by GETNLWR : 04-30-2008 at 09:48 PM. |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
$350 is just what the shop I bought the LCP from quoted me.
I haven't actively tried to see what I could get for it. Just kinda bitching. haha Besides, I can't afford another gun right now. ![]() |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
Dont get me wrong, its not that I hate the M4... Its just that... Unless its a F/A or Burst weapon that acutally has a M203 attached to it... its a waste of space. Why have a barrel with a cutout and an thin spot under the handgaurds that can easly warp with heat.

Re: The New Firearm Thread
Question for GETNLWR and anybody else with input, pretty soon I'm going to be looking into getting a handgun, but don't know what brand, what model, etc. to look for. I'd like to find a nice .45 revolver, and don't know where to look, or for what brand to look for. So, any suggestions. I'd also like to keep it within the $500-600 range. Thanks.

Re: The New Firearm Thread
A revolver is great if you dont know a whole lot about a firearms. They very rarely ever malfunction. If you want a 45 revolver, I am curious as to what size you are interested in. there is also 2 different 45 revolvers, a 45colt and a 45ACP. If you are interested in a 45acp you will have to use Moonclips to load it/unload it easly. The 45ACP brass does not have a rim like a 357mag. You can get 45acp rimmed, but its VERY hard to find and get, most people who have it reload it too. Now if you are interested in a 45colt you have plenty of options too. Do you want a larger gun or a smaller gun? This is some important info. I generally dont reccomend 45acp revolvers for many people. Generally they are purchassed by people with an extensive shooting history. Tell me what caliber you want and a somethng about how big you want this to be. maybe a hint towards barrel length. Perhaps you could tell me what you are planning on doing with this revilver you want- CCW/target/hunting? If you can answer me that, I will make an honest reccomendation. |

Re: The New Firearm Thread
I would like a short barrel, don't know specific length. I plan on using it for a little bit of target practice, but the main reason I want it is to have a gun in the house. I don't currently have a firearm and I'd like to get one for protection. I've been looking at the S&W model 625 online, would that be considered a .45 colt or .45 acp?

Re: The New Firearm Thread
That would be a 45ACP. I think you might be better off with a 44special or 44mag with 44 special rounds in it. SW revolvers can be a bit pricey... They are nice though, I have one in 38SP.
