Roadside smog check, smog checkpoints, WTF!..

so today on my way to work i come to signs that say be prepard to stop.
Ok this is weird isnt it a little early for a dui check point.
so after waiting in line for about 2mins i can see a friggin Dynomomitor sittin in the right lane. so as im basically shitting a brick cuz i just installed a 160 tstat and hypertech, i see a surburban pull onto the dyno and i freely continue on my way to work.

Cliff notes, Beware of roadside smog check in cali

Re: Roadside smog check, smog checkpoints, WTF!..

Cal is getting ready to implement new stricter smog req's for SUV's, trains,
and many off road vehicles such as tractors as well as over the road trucks.
For some it's for NOx reduction. For trucks buses and off road it's opacity
testing.

It's part of an "enhanced" emissions reduction program that targets
heavy duty vehicles including largeSUV's. CARB passed a ways back.
Smogs are going to get hard here, like they weren't already. In Nov
comes EVAP testing for non-OBD-II rides.

It will cost more to smog and the tes will be longer and more than likely
more failures..It's pretty moronic. They will remove the gas cap, pinch
off the return line going from the EVAP canister back to the gas tank.
They they will pressurize the tank to make sure that vapors aren't escaping
out into the atmosphere. Then they'll release the pressure and let those
same vapors come out of the tank anyway when they are done with the
test !

Phucking morons..and no there is no law against roadside emissions testing.

Is there a law that says they can do roadside testing? Otherwise, wouldn't it amount to something like an unlawful search, if they have no other reason to pull me over for emissions?

Its perfectly legal to do that. California has so many issues as far as polution they need to do things like this now. I was learning about all this in emissions class a couple weeks ago. sucks for you guys...

Damn...Id fail the FFFFFFUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKK out of that one...
So whats the penalty? To they impound the vehicle on site? We have emissions here in TN but all they do is an OBDII diagnostic check (96+) and a sniffer test at idle, 220ppm hc and 1.2% co2 (95-)

Thank GOD for tunercat (turn SES OFF!!!)

either way, if it's a law that you need to be in compliance with smog regulations then i see no problem in them enforcing it. i'm sure they have to get inspections on their cars also that includes a smog check. how would that be any different?

Re: Roadside smog check, smog checkpoints, WTF!..

Being required to get smogged every couple years for tags is much different that being subject to a "random" pullover to check my compliance with smog laws. It seems too incoveniencing and micromanaging of the state, to me. If they had a valid reason to pull me over (obviously being a gross polluter), I could see that.

Because I can't think of a better example: State law says I should not have a weapon in a vehicle unless I have the proper authorization to do so (CW permit, etc. Does that make it right that the cops can have a checkpoint to check for weapons in vehicles?

I do live in CA, btw.

I get what KA is saying. Im interested in the selection process. Im guessing that you have to display probable cause for being a gross poluter. Otherwise it would open the state up to tons of lawsuits.

Well maybe the problem isnt that one car lets out too much nox but its that cali has a hundred million bazillion cagillion cars driving down the raod at any given moment with one person in a suburban to go to work. I know that this isnt true for everyone, but compared to here cali is ****ed up

well you're supposed be in compliance ALL the time, not just one day every two years.

sure why not. there's check points all along the US mexico border that checks every single car for i'm assuming illegals. how would it different to check for illegal people than it is to check for illegal weapons or illegal vehicles?

Let me put it this way. The roads belong to the govt, local or state depending which one your on, even though you pay taxes through gas, registration, inspection, and sales tax on your vehicle, along with other sources of revenue. They have every right to stop you, poke you in the ass, diassemble your car, and then nut on your face. Its their property...

In addition to that, if you modify your vehicle in a way that it is no longer to state codes, and you get called out for it, get over it. Its the law, and you broke it.

I dont believe they have the right to stop you for no reason. Just like a cop cant pull you over and search your car without probable cause or a warrant.

Maybe it's time to put the old cb back in the truck & develop a warning network as to where these spot smog checks are being set up. It worked in the 70's to avoid speed traps when the speed limit was reduced to 55 mph

When you get out of your vehicle remember to snap to attention, click your heels together, stick your right hand in the air & yell "Sig Heil!!"

Cali has been doing a lot of BS for a long time. It no longer comes as any surprise when they do stuff like this. I do agree that your vehicle should be in compliance at all times. I also have a hard time breathing when we go to Fontana.

On an unrelated note, did you guys know that several states (cali included) have anti-idle laws for the big trucks. Over 5 mins and it's a fine. Several companies have come up with APUs so trucks don't have to idle. An idling semi uses roughly a gallon an hour and an APU supplying power to a truck and heating or cooling it will use just over *one* gallon during the 10 hour rest period. Cali is now saying that APUs are illegal as well! How do they expect these ppl to rest if they can't be comfortable? If a driver can't sleep it just makes him/her more dangerous behind the wheel.

CA does not have vehicle inspections, if you can get a "pass" on your emissions test every 2 years, you can drive any piece of shlt.

It's not bad here at all.

Seems most that get all work up over shlt like this, don't even live in, or even know anything about CA.

I dunno where you are 96, but the air here sucks. The central valley is all ag (dust) and we get all sorts of pollution hanging out here because it blows in from LA and then can't escape back over the mountains.

<--------- Location.

I don't think that dust you're talking about uis from L.A., you're on the other side of the Grapevine, don't think youn get any of L.A.s stuff. And between you and L.A. is Lancaster & Palmdale, that's all desert. You're trapped between huge mountains and deserts, so that's just natural that it's dusty.

Re: Roadside smog check, smog checkpoints, WTF!..

Yeah 96, I know the dust is ours, but we get a lot of your pollution and stuff that blows over the mountains and hangs out here in the valley. And yes, I got that you live in LA, but LA is quite a big city. =P

And yes, kevincolin, I'm well aware of where I live. =P

Just some highlights from that:

Although participation in the survey is not mandatory;

They do not "pass" or "fail" the roadside emissions tests, so these tests add no additional repair requirements for drivers of high-polluting vehicles. The procedure usually lasts less than 10 minutes.

See, like I said, a bunch of fuss over nothing.
