I didn't know Ford had one. But Chrysler had the turbine car. Jay Leno has one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Turbine_Car

damn that Datsun is badass.

I'd say they are weird because its not a conventional engine design using a piston.

Corvair boxer-style engines are cool, and kinda odd for a GM design (though VW/Porsche use the same design).

Subaru and Tucker too. Tucker used an H6 from a Helicopter. Subaru used H4s for a long time and their first H6 was in the SVX. They didn't use one for a while after that until the B9 Tribeca. Then into the Legacy and I think the Forrester uses it now.

Flat engines are awesome though. Corvair's were cool cars. I have a '66 Corsa 140. 4 single barrels, or a turbo, or regular 2 barrels. Not a bad thing. Although the space age aluminum heads people didn't like because spark plug changes are a pain in the ass.

Yeah, 4/7 swap is a racing deal. Supposed to improve the crankshaft harmonics with the modified firing order.

There is also a 2/3 swap to go with the 4/7. So the firing order goes to 1 8 7 2 6 5 4 3, and no 2 attached cylinders fire after one another. Supposed to be a good power increase with a stock (restricted airflow) motor. LS motors have that firing order, along with some Fords and older Caddys.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Slant-6_engine

Kinda weird, basically half of a "V" engine

Radials are quite odd too. It's amazing what they could design decades ago with only a pencil and paper. I think they even supercharged some radial engines, which is nuts.

amen to that, the slant 6 is probably the toughest engine i've ever ran into. i knew a guy once that had a dart with slant in it and he got drunk and was reving the shit out of it and it threw a rod popping a hole in the side of the block and he decided he wasn't walking back to town(a fairly long ways) so he covered the hole with mud and grass(so the oil wouldn't keep splashing out) and drove it home, it sat in his front yard for a year then he sold it

The boat engines are not reverse rotation........... Just reverse flow. Exhaust ports are the intake ports and intake is the exhaust. It is basically just a different cam grind still the same rotation.

Re: odd/weird engines

I came up with this idea years ago, Wish I had the money to make it,

Fast forward to 0:20

Basically take a hydraulic compressor or swash-plate multi piston compressor and convert it to a petrol engine. all forces are kept linear, no need for a crank as usual.

Just a new way of doing the same old thing, in a smaller package.

Imagine at each end a normal 4 stroke engine head.

Re: odd/weird engines

dude, I had one of those Saab V-4's! I guess it was made or Saab by for cuz the the intake and block had ford emblems stamped in teh castings, It came into our auto class and we couldn't use it for a class engine so I volunteered to take it out of there, had it sitting at the house then sold it, that was an interesting motor, I'd love to have one of those again.

It is street legal. He still has the factory engine in and it's functional. They did a show on him and his different jet powered vehicles a few years back. He's put jets on all kinds of things.

i think it's got a vr6 maybe, not sure. why would it be unsafe? it's no different than driving behind some asshole with 2x4's hanging out of his vehicle or some shit. lol
when he drives it on the street there's a plug in the turbine with a red flag hanging off of it.
