Holy crap, man! Glad to hear your mom's okay. I was thinking before I read this that the OP would decide to put down the pitbull. That's another reason I stick with cats.

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

I have a well trained German Sheppard and have spent many hours and dollars on him. He is the bst dog I hav ever had. He only listens to me and only me. My family all love him like one of the family but if he ever attacked one of them it's a wrap for him. My wife and two sons are not expendable, he on the othr hand well... Good choice. Hope your mom still has both legs

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

i love almost all breeds of dogs with the exception of pits my dad raises jack russel terriors. and one of the dogs me and my brother went in together to buy him was killed by a pitbull. one of the first times i seen a tear come out of my pops eyes. both are next door neighboros had pits and both have came into our yard and killed our dogs. im sorry to those of you that think pits are the best dogs in the world. but they are unpredictable animals breed to kill. plain and simple.

and to the OP i hope your mom heels fine. and sucks that your child may never get to know the true companiunship a loved dog can provide a child but i see the fear for your childs safety after an attack like that. i know i will always miss buckshot, the dog i had growing up.

Yeah I carry a poodle... I'm not really a pet person by any means, but when I did own dogs we had two beagles and a german shepard. And even if I did own a poodle, I don't need a tough dog to prove my manhood, I'll leave the insecurity to people like yourself.

aggressive by nature? theres also probably about 50 other breeds that were born to HUNT. $20 says the OP's dog isnt even a true APBT

well, im pretty sure the OP wouldnt mind having a sissy poodle, pits are overrated, id take a sissy poodle any day over a pit. At least I know my family wouldnt have to worry about it snapping. Sure it can "protect" or whatever, (unlike the other millions of breeds that perform the same thing?), but why do I want the satifaction of having a tank of a dog that not only can tear a burgular up, but also might snap and tear my family up? They are nothing but a time bomb.

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

I simply say that you should in ANY case Punish the DEED and NOT the BREED. In every statistical case the single breed of dog with the MOST reported bites is the Golden Retriever...! Yup, it's true. But everyone says there such great family dogs... I've had Dobies, Pits, Boxers, Beagles, Black Labs, and German Shepards. I could walk up and reach right in front of ANY of them and take the food right from their mouth without any issues. Most of these dogs were K-9 dogs mind you, but the fact remains that of any dog yeah there's a chance of being bit. Just don't negate a specific Breed of dog based on a few. Punish the specific action accordingly, not the whole Breed of dog.

I agree with the OP even though the situation as a whole really sucks. I personally wouldn't have gotten rid of the dog to begin with because of the loyalty they develop to the Original Owner.

I hope your mom gets better and all is well.

There is also a big difference in a dog bite like a nip (say when you step on a dogs tail on accident) or a bruital attack when the animal keeps coming after you, latching on, etc. This is where animals like Pittbulls are different because typically it's not just a nip or a quick snap at someone, it's usually a full blown attack. I'm not saying other breeds don't attack, however it's not nearly as cmmon as when it comes to breeds like Pitts.

dude I don't know if you get all your info from watching news or what but most of the comments you and a few others have left on this thread are false, they are not the most likely dog to be involved in an attack, it's not in their DNA, they don't really have locking jaws(not sure if anyone in this thread mentioned that, it's just a common misconception)not every pit is vicious and will at some point in its life attack little kids and rip peoples face off, I know it has happened and I'm not debating that but, it's mostly about how the dog was raised and how it was bred. sure there are some pits that attack and even kill people but like someone else mentioned believe it or not there are more reported attacks by golden retrievers than any other breed in the nation.
I'm not just talkin out of my ass, my wife and I own a business in the pet industry and have been around more breeds of dog than most people know exist so I am speaking from experience. and alot of the time you hear about a dog attack on the news they say "pitbull" even when it is not because of the attention the word pitbull gets and they know it will draw in viewers, not giving a fvck about the reputation that they are giving these animals. I have owned many pits in my life and most people will come up and tell me how beautiful my dog is as they are petting him and ask what kind of dog it is and snatch their hand away when I say pitbull, not because my dog bit or snapped at them but because the media and society have made them afraid of the word and even hate and condemn the word without even knowing what the dog looks like, and it really is a shame cuz they are one of the greatest most loyal dogs I've ever owned.

Also an untrue statement, I was getting a dog out of a cage and had the MINIATURE poodle bite me on my middle finger and it went through finger sending me to the ER, sissy? I wouldn't say so. I also read a police report about a guy who was babysitting his 2 week old nephew and left the baby on the bed to warm up a bottle and the families 8lb. pomeranian got onto the bed and mauled the baby ultimately killing the child, so how many of you heard that on the news? if there was ever a dog that was more prone to attack it's the smaller breed "sissy" dogs I believe you called them. You guys really should check your facts and do a little bit more research.

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

Just to be clear I'm not defending the dog, I fully agree with his decision to put the dog down, if any one of my dogs pit or otherwise I'd put one behind it's ear and be done with it. as far as them not stitching up you're mom's leg it's pretty common because dog bites tear the skin and flesh as opposed to a clean cut, mine didn't get stitches either and healed fine, I just wouldn't go wading in any creeks any time soon. Hope your mom heals up okay.

Ill never own another pitbull regardless. This dog wasnt raised to be a fighter or anything else he was always gentle with anybody and other animals and this still happened. I used to think the same thing about the deed not the breed but after it happens to you or someone your close to it changes your mind.

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

Please understand I AM NOT advocating the dogs behavior. I'm simply tired of great dogs (if raised right) getting a bad rep because of the ones that were raised incorrectly or in a nature NOT conducive to the dogs well being or nature. The OP shows no signs of raising the dog incorrectly or with mal-intent and therefore I can justify his decision. However if you got a 1yr old Pit from a rescue shelter and 6 months later the dog just suddenly attacked a cop walking down the street, well, you'd have to question how the dog was raised for the 1st year and by whom before you can just blame the fact that its a Pitbull....

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

I used to deliver pizza when I was younger.

One night I came to a house with a large dog, black, I think it was rotti and mix something else.

The screen door was closed and the wood door was open so I could see him down the hall and he could see me. The owner yelled and said he won't touch you, don't worry, and to come on in while she was getting the money.

I opened the door and it shut behind me and the dog just stared at me. It got up and started to walk towards me down the hall and it started to growl.

It got about 3 feet away and it made a move like it was going to lunge or jump at me, so it got a real ****ing hard kick to the head.

The owner was pissed and said she was going to call the cops, I said go ahead I was just defending myself, so I gave her the pizza for free.

Nothing ever happened from it. I've been cautious about bigger dogs ever since!

I hear that, when I was 13 me and my buddy were playin the old nintendo and his families alaskan malamute just walked up to me and snapped at me and caught me in the crotch reigon but I was able to jerk big jim and the twins out of harms way just in time but it still got me, when I ran out of the house and checked myself the bite was about 1\2 inch away from turnin me into lady gaga but I've had a fear\hatred towards malamutes and huskies.

I don't have a problem with the bows and whatnot but try havin a wife that grooms dogs for a living and does custom coloring and feels the need to dye a couple of our dogs hot pink, that's when I kinda walk with my head down when I'm with the dog lol

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

It's in Pitbull's blood to attack. Everybody I have ever known that had pits have all them snap and attack a member of their family. Except one were the pit got it's head stuck in a bag and died, and I still think it was only a matter of time for that one. I say to anyone I know looking for a dog...Stay away from pits. Yea all dogs attack but pits have it in their blood. Plan and simple. They don't care. Anybody thats sticks up for the breed just hasn't had one snap yet. How many times have you heard of a pit grown from a pup not to be aggressive, not to be a killer, raised around children and the dog flipped it's wig and attack? I bet it's more than the latter.

To the OP. I hope your mom heals fine, and your kids get to grow up with a gentle 'sissy' dog. Buy a puggle. I've had mine for 3 yrs since he was a pup and he's awesome. Well minded and a blast all the time. Shed's a bit much though.

I have owned many pits in my life and most people will come up and tell me how beautiful my dog is as they are petting him and ask what kind of dog it is and snatch their hand away when I say pitbull, not because my dog bit or snapped at them but because the media and society have made them afraid of the word and even hate and condemn the word without even knowing
what the dog looks like, and it really is a shame cuz they are one of the greatest most loyal dogs I've ever owned.
You should get your own facts straight.

Every animal is born with natural instincts, Pittbulls are naturally more aggessive than other breeds.

It's as simple as that.

so exactly where are you getting your facts from because once again you're wrong. there is no one breed of dog that's naturally more aggresive or has it programmed in it's DNA, that is a myth. yes they were originally bred for bull baiting and hunting, but so were alot of other dogs hundreds of years ago, and sure there are some stupid ass people who still train them to fight and guard their dope houses, and help ruin the APBT name. If pit were naturally aggresive they wouldn't need to be trained to fight.

So instincts that all animal are born with is a myth?

lol- Really owning a business obviously doesn't mean you are a expert.

I'd love to hear you tell a real expert that animals are not born with natural instincts.

Maybe we can get someone on here who is an educated expert in ethology to teach us on instincts and natural behaviors of animals and not just someone who claims he's an expert because he 'owns a business'.

People train these breeds to fight and attack because it's easier to do so since the animal is already naturally more aggressive. It's common sense, if you can't understand something that simple then I've said my peace and I'm done talking in circles.

You don't read so well huh? I never said that animals are not born with natural instincts, what I said was that pits are not born being naturally aggresive. B. I also never claimed to be an expert because I'm a business owner, all I did was give an opinion based on the fact that I have a bit more experience and have done bit more research in the subject than the average person. And one last question, if they truely are naturally more aggressive than any other breed then why aren't they #1 on the nations list of dogs involved in attacks?

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

yes if you want a big dog that is a good dog get a bernice( i hope i spelled that right cause if i didnt miah is gonna kill me) mountain dog. they are awesome dogs i had a girlfried when i loved in iowa that raises them and they are damn amazing. yes they have big bark and can be intimidating but they are all babies. i loves miss isabelle she was totally awesome and witha little work they will do about whatever you want them to do. they love kids they love to play and just be a dog. but will warn you when someone that doesnt belong at youe home is there and youcan load your attack dog. they are very family orriented. but i do to an extend agree with the go with the deed not the breed comment but i dont. cause i had a beautiful rednose her name was monster i loved her dearly and she never attacked. my son used to set on the floor and she would wrap her front legs around him so he couldnt get away and he would pull her ears and stick his fnger in her nose and all sorts of stuff. and she would do nothing but lick him once on a while to get him to stop. hell he wasnt even a year old yet. but if someone else messed with her at all she wanted to bite but she didnt. but the thing about it is that she wanted to and the first time she even gave out a malicious bark she was gone. because i was not going to have my son hurt. and family comes first and formost with me.

but anyhow i hope you mom heals up and everything goes fine cause i have been bitten by my own dog before on my left hand and it sucks.

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

I hate pitbulls and all the moron punk kids who walk around with them and think they're such bad asses for owning one.

They are banned in Dade county (Miami) and can't wait for them to ban them in my county.

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

sorry to hear that man, and hopefully your mom's leg heals ok.

glad i have a little, sweet dachshund. she is shy as everything, and would never snap at anyone. i've never really had the urge to get a large dog.

Re: My pitbull attacked my mom

that sucks.. thats why i dont trust those dogs. the slightest thing can make them snap. my boy has one, and the first night he brought it around, we were fine, we were hangin out at my buddies shop, i decided to get some food, so we went to mcdonalds. i came back with some double cheeseburgers, and started eating. Dog saw the burgers, and ****ing snapped. started barking and growling at me and shit, Like it was going to attack me. Good thing it was on a leash. But that was about 3 or 4 years ago. To this day every time i see the dog, it looks at me and starts going ape shit. i get nervous around it. They can be the nicest dogs in the world.. For years.. and then one day just snap for no apparant reason..

Did getto ever tell you about his pit? He was telling me up at Silver City about his dog literally saving his life. He was getting jacked with a gun and the dog was sitting next to him in his truck and woke up and jumped and bit the guys hand and he dropped the gun. I think he said his dog is like 10 years old as well, and is a female pit. I imagine females are more tame though as far as snapping. His dog is cool as hell but I'm still not a big pit fan.
